I've got that same transmission in my Mustang. Everytime I jack that car up with the car in gear, and I can spin the tire a 1/4 of a turn back and forth, I think of how hard autoxing must be on those parts, and how the constant on and off of the throttle must stress the gears.
Apparently they are not indestructable, if you don't mind me asking Brian did it give any warning?, or just go into self destruct. I know its hard to tell with those transmissions because they are so noisey anyway. I have heard they are freshen it regularly whether it needs it or not parts. Thats too bad brian, they usually stand up very well. I have a g force t101 thats was good all race year long, last year. If you know anybody i have a freshly built jericho close ratio built but competition tranny and gear in nc.

I remember reading somewhere that it's actually best to use drag race gears in an application like that. The rationale was that drag race gears are slightly softer and had better luck in dealing with the torque reversals and shock loads inherent in street driving. Not sure of the accuracy of that info, but it would be a question worth asking going forward.

If you don't mind me asking, what are you changing from, and to. I'm running a 2.89 first with a 3.54 rear. I'm now changing the rear to a 3.18 to try and see if I can run the whole autox course in first gear, and make the car cruise alittle better with no overdrive.

That sounds like a much better spread in ratios, Brian. I didn't think you'd be liking those splits when you posted them before... but I guess the new ratios will be a benefit of this bad situation for you.

Yeah those 5 speeds are stupid money, can't really justify that. At first I was thinking the same ratios as you. Due to the lack of overdrive I'm trying to go at it from the other end. I'm 2.87/1.81/1.31/1, on the road course all I use is 3rd and 4th anyway, and I do like that spread. I think you'll be happy with the 1.30 third. My problem is autoxing, first is too low, and second is too high for my cams power band. That is why I'm putting the 3.18 rear gear in. The change will probably kick the crap out of my drag race times though.
Still can't beleive nobody has come out with a reasonably priced five speed, with some normal ratios, that will hold up. I'm sure you experienced the same thing Vinny and I did on the cruises with no O/D. Everyone else is cruising 80mph, my car really had its tongue hanging out taching 4K, Vin and I fell way at the back to the back of that pack. If you think about it, it truely is harder then you think to build a car that can do everything well. There really has to be alot of compromise, it seems if it is a good 1/4 mile car, it won't autox, etc. etc. Its been fun, and expensive trying to figure it out. Good luck. Ron |
