So my 13 year old lab....

I had alot of fun hanging out with you and Rob at SEMA- if you bring it up- can you haul a car back for me? lol

seriously- better let the NW gang know so we have an opportunity to get together:D

rwhite692 11-09-2010 12:42 PM

No problem, Chris! Ned has gone "uptown" on us and has an enclosed hauler and a new truck to pull it with, so he's all set! :D

DRJDVM's '69 11-09-2010 01:45 PM

Marty
I think I'll be okay with the seats....but I can always switch to something else. I have a tilt column and the seats go back really far. Even bieng 6'3" I dont push them all the way back. I'm trying to locate a cheap junk steering wheel to mount up, so we'll see.

Bob
As for the cage..... I think Tim can get me all dialed in while I'm there. We can do a bunch of measurements etc etc. I also plan to make the next journey a family trip so we'll spend some time up in WA etc. So I may be able to come by on the way back down too. I'm not too worried. Being able to be there for each step is great, but not necessary. I'm trying to keep the number of builders/fab guys to a minimum.

DRJDVM's '69 11-09-2010 01:48 PM

And yes I did step up to an enclosed trailer and a 2006 Ram 2500 Diesel :)

No more hauling to WA and worrying about the rain/snow

Nice going on the car Ned, and with the tow vehicle and trailer..

GregWeld 11-09-2010 03:09 PM

DUDE! :D

Forget the cows! You're a bonafide fabricator now! :woot:

Great to see the updates! Keep us posted. Great work.

Musclerodz 11-09-2010 09:15 PM

Ned, modify the outer floor to where the seat will mount flat. It will give you 1.5" of head room and thigh room under the wheel. I just did it to a 70 cuda couple months ago that had Procars in it. Made all the difference in the world

EBMC 11-10-2010 07:23 AM

Hey Ned, It was great meeting you guys at SEMA, the car is looking great! Stop on by sometime.

wellis77 01-10-2011 05:38 AM

Ned, if you bring the car back up to Bruning, have him build a set of the sheet metal covers he made for the E-Ticket for you. They would look perfect with the Precision Metalcraft intake. I'll be going the Precision intake as well on my 5.7 and would love a matching set of valve covers, but I'm not about to drop near 1k for valve covers and I'm not really feeling the billet with that hot sheet metal intake. Care looks great! Any additional progress over the holidays? ~Will

DRJDVM's '69 01-10-2011 10:32 AM

Hey Will

The valve covers Tim has are all milled aluminum too...they arent sheetmetal fabbed. They had a plan to start to make them for production but it never really panned out. Unfortunatley his is the only full set he has...so that ship has sailed

As for valve covers.....my plan right now is to go with the Billet Technology ones...
http://www.custombilletstore.com/Bil...s_p/100456.htm

I'm not too keen on dropping $1k on valve covers either but there just arent many alternatives. I plan on remote mounting my coils and all the other companies have the coil mounts on the covers....Indy cylinder heads have some that are for remote mount coils set ups, and are a bit cheaper, but arent as nice. Billet Tech can make them without the coil mounts, so right now at least, its my best choice.

Jeff Davis at Precision looked into doing the valve covers but the bottomline is that it just isnt financially feasible. The cost to design and then make them just isnt supported by the market...the market is just too small to make it a good business decision for him.

As for progress on the car....... my intake should be done in the next 2 weeks, so I'll post when thet comes. Jeff is still working on it and the remote coil mounts arent back from the waterjet yet.

Made a radiator/upper valence panel to fill in that "void", not done with that yet.....

Started to mock up some exhaust stuff.....got some 3 inch and 2.5 inch pipe to try some stuff out...bought a Dr Gas x pipe...... still trying to decide on a muffler

Been screwing around with getting all the FAST Xfi computers mounted...been struggling with that ALOT...have made 3 different mounts in 3 different locations and havent been happy with any of them so far...just cant find a spot I''m happy with that wont get in the way of something else ( ie loses the glovebox completely...makes running the AC ducts near impossible etc etc) I think I have a final location and mount figured out but its been alot of wasted time on messing with that....trying to think 4 steps ahead so I dont have issues down the road.

Had to swap out my Moser rear diff cover for a "smaller" one.... I got the big one with girdle support etc, but when I put the gas tank back in, the fuel fittings hit the diff cover, so that $150 cover had to go...back to a more "stock" style without all the big braces etc, thankfully that solved the clearence issue. This was the first time I tried to put the tank in after swapping the stock diff for the Dana, so I had no idea until this week...kinda freaked me out at first that I was going to have to notch the tank or something but going to the stock style cover is way easier and cheaper.

I think that about covers it right now.... I'll take some pix and post when the intake arrives....thats a big step :)

Tim does have a set of fabricated covers.

Not cheap but and option. If Brunning is no longer longer making theirs.

DRJDVM's '69 01-10-2011 11:09 PM

I stand corrected.... I though he was using the ones TJ was trying to get into production....Bob, did you do the CAD and machine work for the ones TJ was working on?

Yeah I've seen the Granatelli ones......seems to be about the going rate...the price I'm gonna have to pay makes me sick to my stomach....

he made fabbed ones first, then he macined a set.
I did the CAD work. Someone else machined them.

That's what I'm talking about! I love those covers. I would like to see some of these available to the Hemi guys. I'm not all about the billet (not sure why, just not feeling them), but these are awesome!!! I wonder if Tim would be willing to build any more???

Those Granatelli's are crazy expensive. Eventually I'll have to pay the $ if I want something besides the ugly's I have, but I sure won't like it.

wellis77 01-12-2011 01:12 PM

How are you going to relocate the coil pack's Ned? Are you planning to use the Indy kit or come up with something on your own?

DRJDVM's '69 01-13-2011 09:25 AM

Jeff is making me some brackets to go under the manifold. I'll post some pix when everything is finnished.

DRJDVM's '69 08-13-2011 08:09 PM

Well.....finally some updates.... alot has happende over the last 8 months....just havent got around to posting anything....then I got side tracked getting the Camaro back on the road and havent messed with the Cuda in almost 4 months.

So...... took the car over to Rob's house to fab up the exhaust. Since he has a lift in his shop we figured it would be way easier than working up on jackstands...and it was. Even up on a lift, it was a PITA. Big thanks to Rob for taking time away from his family and his own project, to help me out

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...t%20II/121.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...t%20II/120.jpg

The exhaust turned out pretty damn good for some first time exhaust builders. I bought quite a few bends from Columbia River, and I decided on the Spintech Sportsman 3000F mufflers.....hope they arent too loud :) The pipes are a tad off center in the tunnel but its pretty damn close.

DRJDVM's '69 08-13-2011 08:15 PM

At first I was really trying not to notch the frame but the car is so low and the motor is raised, it looked terrible to have the exhasut go under the trans crossmember....so out came the cut off wheel :).... I rough cut everything and we tucked it up nice and tight. I'm making a new trans crossmember and dialing in some more clearence this weekend. The stuff in the pix looks terrible right now, but I'll get it all even and dialed in.The entire exhaust is above the frame and SFC's so you cant see it at all from the side....

DRJDVM's '69 08-13-2011 08:19 PM

Then back to the mufflers.... The Spintechs are 3 inches deep, so I can tuck them up nice and high and still have clearence to the floor.
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...t%20II/159.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...t%20II/160.jpg

Rob and I then made some hangers using the isolaters that The Roadster Shop sells...

DRJDVM's '69 08-13-2011 08:33 PM

Not too shabby...
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...t%20II/165.jpg
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...t%20II/167.jpg

I left the tailpipes alittle long so I can dial in the exhaust tips later
http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/e...5-12001008.jpg

I went 3 inch from header to muffler and then 2.5 inch over the rear and out the back. With the Air Ride, it gets pretty tight back there when I drop the car...plus it will tone down the Spintechs alittle too....

DRJDVM's '69 08-13-2011 08:39 PM

Jeff Davis at Precision Metalcraft got the intake all made for me a couple of months ago, but havent had the time to post pix up. He let me borrow the original prototype as a test fit and then modified the original design to be alittle shorter and more compact so it all fits under my hood. He also machined my front timing chain cover to remove some un-necessary "bulges" and add some AN fittings. The he had a mounting plate so I can run my coils under the intake and really clean up the valve cover area.

The intake is gorgeous....its really going to make the car stand out from all the other Cuda's with a 6.1 HEMi transplant

DRJDVM's '69 08-13-2011 08:48 PM

Got all my AC unit, PS pump, ALT and other front drive accesorries all mounted up......

And thats where we stand right now. Now that I finally got the front frame swapped out on the Camaro and got that back on the road, I can get back to working on the Cuda....plus the kids are back in school!!!! So that opens some time too.....

This weekend I hope to get the new trans crossmember done and get the rough cut frame notch all dialed in so it looks nice and is more structurally sound.

I was hoping to get the car back to Tim at Bruning Auto Design to have him do some more stuff....but its looking like that might not happen. Tim is working full time a SAR and has lots of other side projects in his "spare" time...just doesnt look like he will have time..... I understand..... I'd love to have him do more work on it, but I have no choice but to look at some other shops to keep the progress moving

wellis77 08-13-2011 11:55 PM

Great work Ned!

torino420 08-14-2011 05:43 AM

The exhaust turned out great, nice work!

Good luck toning down that hemi, it will sound good you can count on that!

Richio1 08-14-2011 08:02 AM

Great work Ned. I love seeing the updates. Keep em coming. Sure is great having friends with lifts isn't it. Make things a little easier. Exhaust turned out nice. Did you get the reducers from Columbia too?

GregWeld 08-14-2011 08:12 AM

There ya go Ned! Looking good. Kudos to Rob and you for tackling that job 'cause it's a big one.

DRJDVM's '69 08-14-2011 09:22 AM

Yeah the exhaust was a challenge....especially since neither one of us had built a custom one before....lots of angles to visualize and fine tune the cuts just right to get the angle right and the joint tight. Rob knows a local guy that is awesome at TIG, so now that its all tacked together, I'm gonna pay him to weld the joints all purdy :)

I bought the mufflers straight from Spintech, so I just had them do the muffler exit at 2.5 inches...so the reducer is built in already.

rjsjea 08-14-2011 09:30 AM

That intake is awesome, gonna be a nice looking package with the coil mounts under the manifold.

SPOTT 08-14-2011 09:32 AM

Thanks to Jeff Davis. Now I know who to contact with my 6.1 needs for my dart. Work looks great.

Throttle 08-14-2011 10:24 AM

I love the look of the intake, are you going to leave the motor mopar red/orange and the valve covers satin black? I think that look is killer. :)

Great job on the exhaust Ned. I recently built my first ss exhaust system for my wife's camaro so I know what you mean about all of the angles and cuts. I haven't tackled going up and over the rear yet. Your thread's given me some motivation to get after it.

EBMC 08-15-2011 07:42 AM

Lookin good Ned! Keep the updates coming:thumbsup:

Payton King 08-15-2011 09:37 AM

Glad to see you back on the Cuda

I wondered where it was hiding. Nice work on the exhaust

tones2SS 08-15-2011 05:23 PM

Very, very nice. Looking forward to seeing this bad boy complete. Love that intake and the exhaust work!

rwhite692 08-16-2011 09:41 PM

It was great practice building this exhaust Ned, when it's time to do mine I will need you to provide an additional pair of hands and calibrated eyecrometer. Gotta check the clearance, Clarence!

It was fun making those hangers! ....and having your plasma cutter visit, I was sad to see it go home, gotta get me one of those.

Rick D 08-17-2011 06:04 AM

Very cool Ned glad to see you back on the Cuda. Nice job on the exhaust, it does take a while to build you own exhaust but you save alot of cash in the end. Whats next on the to do list??
