i agree the turndown looks better and slicing the end for a smoother look maybe a 30 angle. You will love the sound of the spintechs, i just put them on my 68 and they sound really nice. You've got a nice car there i know you're stoked about hearing it run. I just re-fired mine for the 1st time in 2-1/2 years last weekend.

Flash68 05-02-2009 03:15 AM

And due to Holley not sending their proprietary fitting that no one in the world carries, it will hold up the fire up session planned for this weekend.... It will ship Monday and hoping for a Thursday fire up. The IC may be all done by then anyway... good times!

I wanna say thanks to the Gearhead crew for really putting it into overdrive this week on my car and it sucks it came down to a simple stupid fitting that should've been sent with the other Holley stuff. Jason, we know it's not your fault! We'll get em next week. :)

Yeah the angle cut might be a good idea for that.

I am stoked to hear the Spintechs. Which version do you have?

Your re-firing schedule is almost identical to mine. I bought the motor in early 2007 and so it's been about 2.5 years for me as well. :)

Lets get to the crux of the real problem with the car right now.

You want to us to enjoy your fancy new wheel look, yet they are surrounded by those dirty tires in all these pics.

I don't understand your priorities on this project Flash.

;)

bulldog19 05-02-2009 08:45 AM

I have the sportsman Xl with a Dr Gas X-Pipe. Nice rumble @ idle and when you get into it is when it really sounds nice. What are your state laws like in regards to sound for getting the car inspected? I tried to get mine inspected and was turned down for it being too loud! Law allows for a decibel level of 96 i was 98.2 @ 2000 RPM. I'm going to try some screen and steel wool in the tailpipes to get it down. Good thing we just clamped the tailpipes for now. Yes i was stoked when we fired it for the 1st time as i had some top end work done, new heads, roller cam and dual 4's. As stoked as i was my 5-year old daughter was even more excited. She said cool Dad now we can go cruisin and get ice cream! Glad i got white houndstooth interior!

tones2SS 05-02-2009 09:38 AM

Flash, I can't wait for the fire-up.
You must be happy. Car looks great with those wheels.
We're gonna need some high res pics for our desktop backgrounds!!

Tough crowd, Skip! ;)

My priority is doing a 4000rpm clutch dump as soon as humanly possible! :D

Yeah I have the same mufflers. I'm pretty excited to hear them in the flesh. I don't hear of too many guys in Calif getting in trouble for too many decibels, but I do have to get this car inspected to be registered at DMV I believe. I have had a car inspection with the Hiway Patrol before and also at the DMV... not sure what my best bet is... hmmm.

That will be fun to take your daughter for ice cream. :)

Flash, you may get Db tested when you go get your car inspected at the CHP. In that case, turndowns are pretty loud. I'm not sure you could get away with them there with a loud exhaust like that. If you don't get that tested, they liked your car. The reason I say this is because I've had my car run without tail pipes. Straight out of the 40 series Flowmaster's. It shook a Mountain View police car when the choke was on and I got a ticket for that. I put tail pipes on it and it quieted the car down A LOT. My neighbor's Mustang had turndowns and my dad measured it at around 94db when driving past our front door, and my car was around 84 with the tail pipes. I think California state law is around the 95db area. Full tailpipes do help a lot with how loud the car winds up. That and it makes it easier to talk inside the car. Now, while I did like the car's sound when it was without tails on it, with tails makes it a bit more bearable for others.

Yeah I was thinkin the DMV inspector would be a lot better chance of not having an issue vs the CHP. Like you said, unless the guy you got at either place was a car guy. I highly doubt the DMV has a decibel meter. ???

And I know I can and may add the tailpipes later if I want if it's more noise than I want. Just figured I start with loud and tone it down if need be. I think I have a higher tolerance for noise than most. And no radio or conversations are necessary in this car for me at this point. :)

Who knows... I may hate it and add the tails or at least over-axle pipes and dump behind the rear wheels after a week!

Vegas69 05-02-2009 04:08 PM

Tail pipes are a biatch with a G bar and they need to be 2.5. Frank has them but they are 500 bones for the set.

Yeah that's what I thought, so another reason I was not wanting them. But I think Jason and the exhaust guy had mocked up some 3" tails that looked like they would work, but they were going under the axle I think....

syborg tt 05-02-2009 06:30 PM

you can get 3" over the axle.

I have a buddy that just finished them and he said it was a pain but it's possible and yes the car does have a stock floor.

I'm not sure if he will post pics but it's possible.

Very cool. I assume he has a 4 link and narrowed tank too?

With the original G Bar? Frank said it can't be done with a decent ride height. Meaning low enough to look good. I'd have them weld in your G Bar bracket as well. I see it's bolted in now. 700 rwhp and a bolted in g bar bracket don't jive with me.

I think they are identical, but I have the Air Ride Air Bar for the record.

And I am pretty sure Gearhead welded everything you could with the 4 link after the previous guy had bolted it all up. Maybe that's why it looks bolted in?

Am I right, J?

Vegas69 05-02-2009 11:14 PM

Exactly the same deal just with shockwaves.

Well you can get the Air Bar with QA1s too cuz that's what I have.

syborg tt 05-03-2009 04:40 AM

yep - that be's the kit, frank be wrong on this one. It can be done it just takes some work.

btw - these are the old pics so i have no clue how it looks now.

I can't tell if this tank is narrowed though ???

That's the new style Alston G Bar not the Air Ride G Bar that I"m running along with Flash.

Jake you are the best - thanks for posting the pics even though it's not my car.

Vegas69 05-03-2009 08:22 PM

That set up wouldn't work with my external fuel pump, but with some tweaks it would.

Flash68 05-08-2009 10:57 PM

Well she successfully fired up today with relative ease. Jason gave me a little taste over the cell phone. :woot:

Will be up there tmrw to see and hear it in the flesh, and quite possible go for a little stroll up and down the nice frontage road right there.

Will post some vid and pics when I return. :D

Ha. I was actually happy to pay my bill today after a much anticipated day that I have been waiting for for over 2 years.

Everyone around here has to do their part to try to keep California solvent.... oh wait, nevermind. It's too late. :_paranoid :D
