A quick update on the Muttstang.... some of you may know that the motor "broke" at the Shelby Mini Nats @ Sonoma Raceway.... When I came off track there was a decided "valve lash" issue/noise... So when I went to Dick McGee's race shop there at the track to have him quickly lash the valves - he discovered a missing lash cap.

I left the car there to have them pull the motor and get it over to Tony Odo's shop for a once over/repair.

I just spoke with Tony Jr. and the "issue" turned out to be a broken tip off the valve. They were brand new when Charley had the motor built... and Tony said it was just a defective valve. No other damage done. They're going to re-ring the motor while they're there and they installed new exhaust valve guides and some other minor "freshening" while it's there. It should be done in about 3 weeks.

Good news!

Yeah buddy! Better lucky than smart!

I was figuring a wiped cam lobe -- or some other 'cause'... but he said all the rest of the motor looked great.

Flash68 10-02-2012 12:18 PM

Great! .... so it will be ready just in time for.... nothing!

Maybe I'll put a LS motor in it -- this must be a FET Ford issue only....

Vegas69 10-02-2012 01:46 PM

Big block Chevy's have proved to be the most reliable around here. :D

Yeah --- I'll miss that one and I'm not happy about it! But Tony said "three weeks"...

Between going to Phoenix on the 11th to get the rig --- and then turning right back around and taking the R8 down for INDE track weekend... that's enough for me for one month. I'm going to go from Wilcox AZ (INDE track) straight to Las Vegas for SEMA... and just keeping my fingers crossed that I don't hit snow on Shasta going home!

clill 10-03-2012 11:38 AM

LOL...You can take the R8 to the Shelby club deal. I might or might not go depending on how deep the Giants get in the playoffs.

I would if I could -- but it's a drop top (Spyder) and has no roll bar...

GregWeld 10-03-2012 09:25 PM

I've just made a deal with a buddy to fly down and ride home with me (we'll see if the old fart doesn't change his mind - he's 75)... he's been itching for a ride in the big rig. Oh == and he wants to stop at Brizio's -- and my '33 Speed body should be there by then... I'll call you when I'm down and maybe - if you're home, or not busy - we can stop and I'll show him your Attack! :unibrow:

I was at the game today. Scalped some sweet suite seats (say that 3 times fast) with a few friends. Was an awesome day.

GregWeld 10-04-2012 11:07 AM

Dave,

Remind me that in the future, I need to check with you before I make any half baked plans!

 :woot:

Who knows -- I might get blabbing (imagine that!) and not roll out of SF until Wednesday AM -- and if that's the case maybe I'll steam da rig to your house and Susan will make us all breakfast!

Like that would ever happen!

GregWeld 11-06-2012 09:12 AM

Hey! That was great! I had a good time just slummin' with you guys....
Do you think Ron or Rob got enough info to satisfy them on ANYTHING?

Ron in SoCal 11-06-2012 09:15 PM

^ Since Rob's on his National Dyno Victory Tour I'll answer that...

Uh, No!

(But it sure was fun )

Gotta agree with Ron on this one.:willy: :willy:

Just got back from Dyno week and came up with some new questions.

GregWeld 11-19-2012 08:26 AM

Tony Oddo finished up the "refresh/repair" of the Mustang motor. Dyno sheet is just maybe half a horsepower lower than before. I'll take that! :D

Yeah.... Charley told me that things last longer and are less expensive if I don't wind it out every shift. Obviously he lied! I only drove the car 3 times and I'm having the motor rebuilt - the tranny is worn out... and needs dog gears and something else... and I've blown through 2 sets of tires. WTF -- from now on I'm going to start to drive it hard!

BTW -- I only pick up 10 ft lbs of TQ from 4800 to 5800 so WTF why rev up the motor for a lousy 10 ft lbs!

because the rpm drop upon shifting puts you down around idle.

GregWeld 11-19-2012 01:09 PM

Yeah -- that whole shifting thing is an issue....

McGee just called ----

Turns out that I also have cracks in my shifting forks! So it's a good thing I asked them to tear into the tranny. Lose one of those and we'd have a major issue! The dog rings not so much - but pieces breaking and going into the tranny (meat grinder) wouldn't be a good thing. So $1500+ in tranny parts can be added to this little excursion. The motor refresh was actually cheap IMHO @ 6 grand. Funny -- the ONE valve -- $130 bucks!
