Checked some fitment on cluster and bezel. Pretty happy with the fitment and will look good when they get back from paint. I just got them back from paint and my buddies shop charged me $500 to matte clear it and it looks like garbage, so off to a different shop that has done other stuff for me.
Had a concern of some fitment so I threw a 335 under the back of the car and it looks small. It cleared everything I was worried about so in a few weeks I'll get back to work on the outer tubs to get them finished up. Got the headers I built for the other suspension cut apart to the point that it would fit. Basically starting over and I still might just buy a set of C6 headers and bolt them up instead of burning up that time building a set of headers. My core support showed up today and I was able to get the doors and the front end on to start lining up so I can build mounts for the core support. Need to put the hood on first though and get everything squared. Also started laying out some ideas for close out panels under the hood to hide the corvette frame. I think I like it so far and I'll make an access door to get to the fuses and Infinity Box system if I ever need to. |
Looks great!

Saturday didn't get a ton done because of how much the quarter has to go on and off to check fit and such. I did build a mock up box of the rough size of my radiator, heat exchanger, and cooling fan set up. I need to add a condenser to it, but I think I'm ok in any case. I want it to be laid down so I can build an extractor hood and have it all ducked to keep as much air out of the engine bay as I can to prevent front end lift at speeds.
With the quick stack check done in the front I went back after the passenger outer wheel well. I got most of it built and only a few small parts left at the bottom for the tub and the quarter to make. The rest is ready to be fully welded and finished out. The goal for next weekend it to get the passenger side and driver side finished up and started on the welding of it all. Once thats all done I'll have it shot with epoxy and it will be ready to have the quarters welded on when I get to that step of the build. Right now its going to help me a lot later on in the build to be able to take them off to access stuff inside them when building brake ducts, fuel fill hose and such. From the angles of the pictures with no quarter on you can really tell how much the outer edge curves and why I needed to bend the flange with a bead roller and not a straight finger brake. |
I’ve got a set of TSP headers off a C5 Z06 here that you can have if you want. They wouldn’t fit my 56 Cameo

Got a render update of the new wheels from Kris Horton. They are ZR1 style. He's working on the rear wide body as well now. |
Very impressed with your work AJ!

Thanks guys.
Saturday I got the passenger outer tub almost done. A little more grinding on the front side and its done until the quarter is ready to be welded on. I'm going to leave them removable for the time being so I can get to the back side of the structure for things I have in the works later. After I finished up the tub I started some rough mock up to get a visual of how things need to go for the new package tray/filler panel. I have a lot of room at the bottom so I can hide modules and fuse blocks behind the seats. Kris Horton got the wide body mods and wheels finished up on the render as well. It doesn't looks it, but thats 2" wider than stock. |

Last week parts started to roll in and even more parts were bought :G-Dub: SO we have a long update.
Lets tackle the parts list of whats here and on the way. There have been a few member on here reach out after reading my build and hooked me up with parts they decided not to use and help save me a bunch of money vs. buying new at full price or they got a deal and passed it on. Thats awesome that people still do that and support each other on here :grouphug: For the parts lets start with the transmission. It's a low mile C7 Z06 TR6070 7 speed with the cooler pump. I wanted this because its 1 3/4" longer than the T56 that I have. I have 3.5" to make up from stretching the wheel base in the car to fit the Camaro platform and that took a big bite out of it. Because I plan to make some power I know the C5 diff. is weak and I also wanted a diff. cooler. So I was able to locate a C6 Z06 rear diff. to handle power transfer duty. I've always wanted the C6 ZR1 brakes. I had them on my '15 Z28 and liked them and it was cheaper to buy them used than new aftermarket stuff. I'm running ABS so I should be ok tracking them with the brake coolers I plan on making. To get the ghosts of horsepower past out of the engine and flowing to the rear I picked up a set of Stainless Works 2" C6 Z06 headers from a member here. These and the trans were both guys that reached out here. Parts that are on the way I have a 2006 C6 Z06 torque tube. The early C6 tubes were longer with the T56 and shortened up about 3/4" on the later C6 when they switched to the TR6060. The C6 TT and a C6 bell housing combined with the 7 speed bring me to 3.6" longer than the C5 driveline which is well within tolerance of the GM bolt holes. I have the crank on order for the engine along with the ZL1 Camaro supercharger lid with a reinforced brick. Hoping to get the engine together so thats one less project to get done. Now lets talk about the last part that showed up and progressed the firewall this past weekend. The 3 gallon dry sump tank. I wanted to put the tank in the tulip like Mark does, but the Vette frame takes up a lot of that area. So I moved it inboard some. It looks like I gave up a lot of foot well space, but you can see how much of the floor I hard to cut out. This is also the area GM put the fuse block and BCM so I actually lost no room at all. New firewall and the oil tank are mounted. I can now finish up the firewall on the passenger side and get the Vintage Air bulk head mounted too. I'm still trying to figure out were to put the breather. It might go where its pictured or on the other side. The plan is to make a cover to close out the tank area and help protect it from the header heat. I also still have plenty of room to mount the full size Vintage Air IV Magnum over the trans tunnel so my glove box will actually be full size. |
Looks amazing. What VA system are you running?

Saturday was a busy day. Started out with finding out the ZR1 brakes don't fit the 19x10 79 offset test wheel I have. I found after googling that its common for them to not fit cheap knock off wheels so I'm waiting to hear back from Boze to see if they can help make it work.
With that buzz kill out of the way I got the roof skin from a 2019 Camaro cut down and the roof of the '69 cut out and the two lined up ready for finial fitment and welding. I was really surprised at how well they lined up without any mods or metal working. With the roof on track I wanted to get back to the firewall so I can get it done. I got the breather tank and the HVAC bulkhead mounted so it's ready to focus on finishing out the metal fab. I cut out the old vent hole and made a new filler panel to line up better with the new frame and old body and wasn't all beat up. On the inside of that I made another panel to close out the interior of the car. Up top I used the english wheel to shape the curve panel so it wasn't a bunch of flat pieces welded thrown together. I'm pretty happy with how its coming along. The plan for the area is a removable tulip panel so I can get in and seal and paint it and possibly put something else in there. Out by the oil tank I want to build a close out panel to block the heat from the headers and dress up the engine bay some. I work next Saturday so no progress for a few weeks sadly. My torque tube and rear cradle are supposed to be here soon, so I should have all of that to mock up next time I work on the car too. |
Love that roof mod. Where is that piece from or is it custom?

This is a pretty big update as lots of parts came together for the first time and this is the first time the drive line has been put into the car. Lets start with the stuff I mess with during the week after work. I am running Anvil Phantom marker lamps. I'm not much for having the same thing as everyone else so I converted them to LED.
https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/led.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/led1.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/IMG_6559.md.jpg So with that out of the way lets get started on Saturdays projects as I had a lot of stuff to test fit. Back story on the large part of this is to make the C5 frame fit into a '69 Camaro I had to make the wheel base 3.5" longer on the Vette frame. That in turn made my torque tube 3.5" to short to fit into the new wheel base and I was going to have my tube made longer. Being I wasn't in a hurry for it I never got that done which worked out best for me. Knowing that the C6 torque tubes are a different length I started to research how long they were. I was also looking into how much longer the TR6060 is because the front pump in it is why the C6 torque tube is a different length as well as the wheel base being different (due to the auto 6 speed being longer was the main reason for that). I found that since early C6 cars came with the T56 and late came with the TR6060 that the early cars had a longer torque tube. The bell housing is also deeper because of the twin disk clutch in the ZR1. I found that some people were able to swap the 7 speed manual into their C5 and C6 cars and its roughly 1 3/4" longer than the T56. So after a lot of math and crunching numbers I was able to figure out that a 2006 C6 Z06 torque tube and bell housing, a C7 Z06 transmission, and a C6 Z06 rear diff. (output shaft is bigger on the Z06 trans than the standard and same with the rear diff.) all linked together came out to 3.61" longer than my C5 stuff. In theory it should fit. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/...urments.md.jpg Also to make this work I needed to swap the rear cradle because of how the transaxle mounted. Here you can see the difference in the bell housing height. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/tt.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/bell.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/bell1.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/frame.md.jpg So now the moment of truth came and everything fit like it was designed to from the factory. The shifter even lined right up in the factory location. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/install.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/installed.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/shifter.md.jpg |
Part 2
Having the hard stuff done I aligned the car so I know where my wheels were supposed to be so I could measure for rear rims. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/align.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/tire.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/tire1.md.jpg With all of that done I was able to mount the shark fin antenna, check supercharger lid clearance, and test fit the 2" C6 Z06 headers. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/super.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/super2.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/roof1.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/super1.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/roof.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/header.md.jpg Since I still had some time left in the day I started mock up of the supercharger reservoir https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/09/30/res.md.jpg |
Cool that your patience & homework yielded a factory options combo that fit vs. additional custom mods/expense.

Ok lets get on with the firewall work. Seems the small parts take forever to fit up. I got the passenger side pretty much ready for grinding, metal finishing, and ready to weld the wiper cowl back on. I need to finish a few small parts on the driver side and get some epoxy shot in it before that happens though. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/07/firewall.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/07/firewall2.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/07/firewall1.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/07/firewall3.md.jpg Seats showed up a day later than I had hoped for so I wasn't able to get them test fit. I went with C7 seats and will upgrade the backs to the comp seats and eventually have them recovered when the interior is done. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/07/seat.md.jpg Kris Horton updated my renderings with the wide body as well. Just like the real car its hard to tell anythings been done, but having a before and after he for sure made it wider in all the right spots. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/07/IMG_6646.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/07/IMG_6645.md.jpg Thats all for a few weeks. I have other things to do the next 2 Saturdays, so no work for a while. |
Ok so I was wrong about the weekend I had to work, its next weekend. So I was able to get some work done on the car Saturday. I started off by putting the seats and dash back in so I could see how it all fit. The ergonomics are great and they bolted right in. The C7 seats sit a little higher combined with the 1/2" taller seat floor mounts they still have enough clearance to safely fit a helmet. The passenger seat all the way back has enough room for someone 6'3" to sit in it comfortably and not be cramped. I like how the driver seat fits and the pedal placement works very well for me.
https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/seat3.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/seat.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/seat2.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/seat1.md.jpg After getting the seats in I moved onto the wiper motor. I've been over thinking how to mount it for way to long. As it turns out simple is better in this case. As soon as I find my wiper arms I'll get the transmission link finished up and check one more task off my list. Before anyone asks, that is a 2002 Deville wiper motor and modified wiper transmission links. Yes it is what Detroit speed used on their early kits, and it works with pretty much every GM wiper switch with delay. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/wiper1.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/wiper.md.jpg Since I still had a little time in the day I started on the dash mounts. I got the driver corner finished up and started to weld it in place. I'll finish welding it when I get the dash out. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/dash.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/dash1.md.jpg After finishing up the wiper motor I've been playing with the idea of quarter vents to cool my trans and rear diff. while using the door vents for the brakes. I liked the C7 Z06 vents and made a paper template off a C7 to see if there was room. Since the paper lined up nicely I bought a vent off a wrecked C7 to see how the real vent lines would line up. Turns out that the C7 and the Camaro have the exact same body line, which kinda tells me that I have to put them in. Kris Horton saw my update in Instagram and added them to the render real quick. They look pretty sick on there so it looks like I have another project added to my plate. I plan on venting them out one of the rear defuser fins on each side. https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/vent2.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/vent.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/vent1.md.jpg https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/10/21/vent3.md.jpg |
