Project "Payback"

I have been lurking around here for quite a while and thought I would introduce my project that has recently started. It took me nearly a year to find the right car for the project. I ended up purchasing a all original 307 car with 90k original miles and have already sold a bunch of parts I don't need to the guys on camaros.net. I had purchased another car but found it to be rough and ran across this car and couldn't pass it up.
I named the car Payback due to a long story that I'll keep fairly short. I purchased a 1968 camaro at the beginning of my senior year in highschool for $3500. The dealer I bought it from agreed to paint it any color I wanted as part of the deal. I decided on corvette yellow with black Z28 stripes. I picked the car up and paid cash. It had a 400 small block and turbo 350. Turns out the car was destined for the junk yard before the shop rescued it. I took it to prom and raced the car out on the country roads quite a few times and did well. The 400 was tired along with pretty much all the mechanical parts. I spent the next three years and every dime I made restoring the mechanical parts of the car. I built a 355 with a steel crank, decked block, double hump heads ported and polished, etc. Rebuilt the entire suspension, brakes, transmission, repainted the engine copartment, underneath, bushings etc. Well I finally had it just the way I wanted it and had about 2000 miles on the clock when I decided to move to Las Vegas. I stored it and planned to come back for it the moment I had a place to keep it. That never happened. I got a phone call that it had been stolen and they did eventually find the car. It was stripped and I couldn't take it back. I got a measly 7500 bucks from the insurance company.
I have always wanted to build another one so I am going to payback the piles of dog **** that stole it by building my idea of the perfect 1969 camaro resto mod style. Most of the parts are already bought and I will post updated throughout the project.

Cool story, I'm sure it will be nice as I've seen alot of your posts and you do have some nice parts lined up.

If you are in vegas have you contacted Tyler at ATS? www.t56kit.com he can hook you up with some nice parts.

skatinjay27 07-01-2007 03:31 PM

hey im in vegas too, are you the same vegas69 over at protouring.com
if so why not post some of the newer picks...

Vegas69 07-01-2007 06:52 PM

I haven't had a chance to speak with Tyler at ATS. But I will keep him in mind in the future. These are the newest pictures. The wheel shot you saw on protouring was the previous project with my wheels hung on it. I'll post the real deal when its mocked up and mini tubbed.

Vegas69 07-30-2007 09:34 PM

My project is unfortunately on hold due to a fallout with the builder that was going to do the car. After a year and a lot of promises that weren't kept. I'll leave it at that. Looks like more payback is in order.
I am talking to someone about taking over and if things work out I will be doing a roller and completing the rest of the car. The engine shows up next week at my house. Good news with the engine. It made 593 hp at 6000 rpm and still climbing and 587 lbft at 3700rpm. I ended up getting a march setup and didn't realize it doesn't have some of the bling so I will be adding it when it gets on the engine stand in my garage.
Here is the dyno: http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...h_1eda007a.jpg

The Prodigy Rescue Team is on the way! To cool of a story! To cool of a customer! To cool of a car! Can't say no. Besides, I need something to drive in Vegas!

Vegas69 07-31-2007 09:23 AM

Frank and I have struck a deal! I am now excited about my project again. Frank I'll let you borrow the car anytime buddy!

Bandit Ls-1 08-01-2007 12:12 AM

Vegas69 08-04-2007 06:12 PM

The car is being picked up this coming week and delivered to Prodigy Customs along with all my parts. Once it gets there, Frank will be able to give me a better idea of when to expect it.

Vegas69 08-28-2007 11:13 PM

Can you say the boys at Prodigy Customs are kicking some ass on my car! Franks got more done having my car for a short while than a year at the last shop. Looks like buying that virgin 307 car paid off. I am not going to let the cat out of the bag on the finish date yet because it's rediculous!

cool, you must be very excited!!!is frank putting a nitto model in the car for delivery!!!

ProdigyCustoms 08-29-2007 03:14 PM

Opps, what other pictures were in that group? The fabrication should be done in two weeks. Fenders and doors are repaired today. Quarters this week, mini tubs and blocking next week. Should be back in Vegas by mid October.

olds87 08-29-2007 04:25 PM

Nice  , love the pic of nitto model and the one on the right.

Vegas69 08-29-2007 05:24 PM

Sweet Frank:thumbsup:

Vegas69 09-11-2007 05:43 PM

Frank and the boys at Prodigy Customs are making great progress. Rough bodywork is done, minitubs are in, subframe connectors are done. Little hiccup with the rear rims. 19x13 and a 345 buldge the sidewalls to much so the rims need narrowed 1 inch. Frank and I are blaming that one on a sleepless night with strippers, booze, and a tatoo. Not going to say which one of us:D Should be in the booth for epoxy primer and getting that body straight for the sexy black paint. Engine photos are next.

Well, were at 20 days now. After a long day of polishing metal and some touch up sandblasting, Payback is now locked in DP90 Epoxy and ready for finish bodywork. looks good in black already!

Vegas, that thing is gonna be bad!

Vegas69 09-12-2007 07:57 AM

Hey Jay the engine is ready just waiting on the headers to show up on my doorstep. Should be next week. Flash I checked out Vertigo and that is one bad ass project!

7TSS 09-12-2007 01:25 PM

Nice project.

Sorry to hear about the previous ride and then the "other" builder.

Looks like things are well on track. Looking at Prodigy's other projects you seem to be in good hands.

Looking forward to more updates

Thank you Vegas.

I have been waiting to see yours come together for awhile now too. I almost got those Boost wheels and I think they're gonna be sweet on your car, especially those big fat rears. Can't wait to see more update pics... keep em coming!

Rybar 09-12-2007 02:58 PM

Looking good, Frank and crew are working fast!

Vegas69 09-21-2007 11:45 AM

The money shot

I think I creamed my pants when I unrapped the first header. Lemons makes some top notch headers. I finally got her almost completely dressed. Still need to play with the plug wires and send back the T-stat housing due to a couple scratches. Heres my beast:

Wow, looking amazing .... those headers are like artwork! Very nice.

68protouring454 09-21-2007 12:02 PM

killer whos valve covers?

Vegas69 09-21-2007 12:14 PM

Thanks guys I am pretty stoked. The valve covers are proform but come alot duller. My engine builder scratched the piss out of them so I knocked off the clear coat with some rubbing compound and then polished them with some wizards billet polish. They came out closer to what I am looking for. Still a few scratches but I'll worry about that once she as some miles on her! I'm also thinking K&N breathers to match instead of the cheapos I roughed up.

Flash68 09-21-2007 12:21 PM

Whoa... everything looks sweet!

skatinjay27 09-21-2007 12:24 PM

man that is gonna look soo good in the 69!!!! todd where did you get the air cleaner assembly from?

Vegas69 09-21-2007 01:14 PM

It's made by proform and comes with a paper filter. I bought the K&N separate. You'll have about 100 bucks in it.

Rybar 09-21-2007 01:15 PM

That engine looks awesome. Nice job putting it together.

skatinjay27 10-23-2007 07:12 PM

any new progress todd?

Vegas69 10-23-2007 08:29 PM

Not sure Jay......I have been trying to stay out of Franks ear the best I can due to Sema next week. I am ready to start slinging parts and have pretty much made all my decisions. The rear wheels have to be narrowed from 19x13 to 19x12 due to the tread width being to wide. I am planning to go to Sema if time allows.

Spiffav8 10-23-2007 08:59 PM

Looking forward to Payback getting finished. AJ and I need another Vegas guy to hang with.

That doesn't sound right? Are you sure you don't need to widen the rear wheel to a 13" because of the 345 tire? The 345 calls for a 12-13.5" wheel so I would think your 13" would be perfect?

Car looks great BTW!!

Vegas69 10-23-2007 11:13 PM

Jay and Curtis I want to see both your cars. If you plan to go to a show or meet up let me know. After mini tubbing the tires didn't have enough clearance so narrowing the wheel 1 inch will gain about a half inch sucking in the sidewall. Last Frank and I talked the car was getting blocked out nice and slick for that shiny black paint. I might have to take Frank out and buy him some lap dances and get him good and drunk to get payback on it's way to Vegas a little sooner.

ProdigyCustoms 10-23-2007 11:26 PM

We do have some news on the tire / wheel dilema. We got Lisa's 345s on 12" rim, and they fit your car Todd also.

As for progress as you know you went on hold lasweek until after SEMA. See ya Saturday night for that lap dance
