Hot OEM colors??? What's out there?
And what are the hot OEM colors out there right now. Who's running OEM rather than some super custom mix?
I'm doing ones like the Subaru blue my '69 was painted and the new Atomic Orange. What else is hot? Thoughts? Also looking for cool silvers and "earth tones" Good high res shots might get used in the story to illustrate :) |
The stripes on my car are painted a BMW color called carbon black. It kinda color changes between black and dark blue depending on lighting... or how dirty the car is.
I have few high res pics at home. I can send them to you if your interested. |
Eclipse Bizen Orange on mine
|
I am using a Toyota burgandy and charcoal colors.
Easy to fix when scratched later. |
I really like Honda's Galaxy Gray as seen on Civic Si's
http://blogs.edmunds.com/.ee93ae1/cm...osure..ee93ae2 And I wnat to start using colors from sport bike manufacturers. There are some truly mind blowing colors in the two wheel world. |
Ton's! I really like Chryslers - Modern Blue Pearl. Has some really cool effects and is much darker in person.
The VW beetle I believe it's called Shadow blue it has some pearl illusion in it. Expensive paint but damn cool. And you can never go wrong with a "blue black". Mercedes has a super black that is sweet! |
Thanks,
Paint codes and pictures.. lol Anyone with a nice high res of thier car in a hot oem color let me know.. might be able to use in the story. THanks |
I know it's not the flashiest color, but I really like Slenning's color combo on his 69 LS7 Camaro on this site. I also really like the darker metallic blue on the later 4th gen's like 2000+ model years.

Steve's got mine. :D

I think this is a pretty sick factory (GM) color. It is "Sport Red Metallic" and the code is WA817K/63. It may not look right in the light they shot it in, but believe me in the right light it has a really cool purple maroonish look to it.

We painted my brothers Nova in an old (1954-89) factory GM color. It is called Linen White and is one of the most pure white colors Ive seen. I guess it just reinforces the fact that you dont need a crazy metallic factory color to make your g-machine look good.

I'm a big fan of "Mineral Grey" that was used on the Mustang in '05. It's not a very common color. It has a sort of earthy look to it but still pops in sunlight because it's metallic. I know a certain editor that likes this color too...(does he still have his stang?)
The top color on my Mustang is a new GM color, I believe it's "Granite Gray Metallic." Here's a close-up shot of it: http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/1...closeupzu1.jpg Kris |

I'm turning in your shot and an unused shot of my '69.. I have no idea which one Johnny will pick. You need to get your car done so it can get some REAL ink... |
you might want to throw in the story that off the shelf oem colors can be modified to better suit the "look" you want. my fullsize blazer was a kia slime green color, that i changed the white toner to a bright yellow in order to exagerate the gold "flop" from the pearl in the color. this works great if you keep the formula exactly as oem, yet change the toner in the formula....makes it really easy to duplicate when repair work is needed.
as for some cool oem colors, nissan frontier has a earthy green, kinda like peral metallic army green, really similar to jonny51's rendering color. jaguar has a burnt orange like penny, but its a euro color, hard to find a formula for.... its got more "richness" to it, smaller metallic, really cool color when comparing it to eclipse or prowler orange. the audi and porsche silvers have a nice flair to them, without major metallic "sparkle". chrysler and ford both have tri coat reds that have a tinted clear mid coat....basically a factory kandy. lexus had a pearl white that uses silver/white pearl.... it doesnt have the "dirty" look to it like most pearl whites. if a customer has a general color in mind, i usually try to find all the variations of it and pick the best one... its amazing how different the same general color can be.... like the burnt oranges, metallic greys, light golds, slime greens, etc. i will usually do like steevo said, and go right to the bike chips when looking for a variation of a color, yamaha R1 blue is one of the best blues out there, but some companies formula is way off. kawasaki has a metallic green that came on zx12's.... a little brighter than an "earthy" color.... but still a clean color. i also look at hich end car company chips.... lambo, jag, mercedes, ferrari, etc.... along with the not so common manufactures...daewoo has some good variations of colors. |
I have my 71 cougar convertible painted 05 dodge magnum red. I get tons of compliments on the paint color

Subaru World Rally Blue Mica http://images115.fotki.com/v689/phot...SC05723-vi.jpg Both of these are VW colors. The darker of the two is Urban Gray Metallic. 18different toners and a HUGE PITA to spray! |

GM Code 72 - Brilliant Red Metallic
It's an early 90s GM OEM but it's still one of my favorites... especially on my Firebird! Pics sent... sorry I couldn't upload... too big...

Kenny Sprayed a Ford Color on our 57 project. The color flip-flops pending the lighting conditions and so far every one that see's it is very impressed.

Encourage people to get in their cars and take a trip to the local car dealer--especially the european lots. So much better than a swatch.

Hey thanks! When Subaru first came out with that color I always thought it would make a great blue on a hot rod project. It looks really awesome out in the sun with the white and brightwork.

I have been looking for a metallic blue for my car. I like BMW Montegro Blue, Infiniti Athlon Blue and the blue they painted Dodge Rams in 02-03. I need to also check out this subaru blue mica when the article comes out.
Planning on a saddle tan interior. |
I can't believe I missed this thread! When ever I see a great color while driving around, I make note of it and download a photo to put in my catalog. That way I can refer to it when I'm talking about a color to someone. Anyway, here are a few of my favorites in the past few years.....
