1969 Torino
I am building a 69 Torino. This is an original 390 4 speed car. Cool car to begin with but it needed to be stepped up a notch.
Here is where I am so far. Engine 390 ported stock heads with oversize valves Ford aluminum PI intake and Factory CJ Holley 735 carb. Billet MSD distributor triggering an MSD digital 6 CD box through an MSD blaster coil and wires. Solid lifter cam research cam 230/236 @ .050 with 560 lift and matching springs and retainers, double roller timing chain, Precision oil pumps rockers, stands and shafts and smith pushrods. Percision oil Pumps blueprinted high volume oil pump and billet pump drive shaft. Canton T road race baffeled pan. Stock 11 to 1 shortblock for now. I have FPA headers waiting in the garage and plan on having Spintech install a side exit 2.5" exhaust with X crossover. Trans Currently I have the stock close ratio toplader in the car but I have a TKO 600, Mcleod aluminum flywheel, driveline specialties Kevlar clutch sitting in the garage. Differential Factory Ford nine inch with a Detroit locker and 3.70 gears. Front suspension RRS Koni coilover strut conversion with 12" discs with PBR dual piston calipers. TCP strut rods and Opentracker racing Road race lower control arms. Stambar adjustable 1" front sway bar. Rear suspension Rebuilt and rearched stock leafs with Koni red shocks. Caltracks low profile underside bars. Solid front spring eye bushings and urethane rear bushings. 11" RRS rear disc brakes with single piston PBR calipers. I have spoke with FAYs2 about building me a WATTS link for my rear. It is on it's way. Stock power brake booster with a Willwood aluminum 1.125 master and all new stainless brake lines. The car sits 2" lower in the rear and 3" lower in the front and rides on some custom Elaisian wheels. 17x8 front with 245/45/17 Firestone Firehawks and 17x9.5 rear with 285/40/17 Firestones. I'm swapping a 3g 130 amp alternator in this weekend and then working on designing some subframe connectors. When I done sorting out the suspension and driveline I want to paint the car the original Jade Black color but will still do the hood and taillight panel in the flat black (I sprayed them that way as an experiment for the look). Still a long way to go but I'm getting there. |
sounds nice id love to see some photos of it. if the 69 and 70 are the same heres led tailights for it http://www.mustangproject.com/Catalo...9-f0b70fe70f6b
|
Sounds like a hot car. Post pix ASAP please.
|
Different body than a 70. I will post pictures soon.
But those lights are a cool product. Who knows maybe they are working on or have a set for my year.
I'm sorting out an ignition issue and will have some pictures to post hopefully this weekend. Tha paint on the car now is a 20 footer but the body is prettty good so in photos it looks pretty good. The Paint will be the last thing so for now the pictures will only be so so. I'm really in the mock up and road test R and D stage of building her now. I research what I think I want to do and install the pieces. Thrash it for a bit and then fix any faults I find and move on to modifying something else. When I think I have a sorted out piece I'll paint it. |
Nice to see another FE member. Let's see some pics!
|
could try emailing them i love there set up in my mustang.
|
Got the new distributor in
So I took her around the block and snapped some pictures.

Yep it is posted there along with my Torino
The 67 is an original GTA 390 power discs, power steering with a C6 and 3.25 rear. Other than Koni shocks, Stambar front bar, the wheels and some internal engine mods she is staying stock. She is sitting on 16x8" vintage wheel works straight spokes with 60 series tires. The motor in her now is the original 390 with one service replacement head. I'm building a new 410 with hydraulic cam, PI intake and universal Ford 735 carb. Stock GT exhaust manifolds with a true 2.5" exhaust with 50 series 3 chamber Flowmasters. She is a cruiser but will have some grunt.

pictures look great and updates on the 69

Been a few years a reintroduction of my project phase II
My project stalled for a while. Economy got shaky so I sat tight and actually bought a bigger house when the bottom fell out of the market. At the same time my car was running and fairly capable so I wasn't in a huge hurry.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...vrsidegmch.jpg http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...adiator001.jpg http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...a/IMG_1056.jpg I started collecting some parts in 2010. A set of 427 Tunnelport heads and matching Dominator flanged intake,a 1050 2 circuit Dominator, a Pond aluminum sideoiler block, quicktime bellhousing, twin disc clutch and a TKO600. Then in 2011 I got serious and sent my heads to Blair Patrick in Tn for some port work. I sent along my block and intake. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...a/TPintake.jpg http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...block005-1.jpg A billet crower 4.375 crank and crower rods push it to 505ci. The flow #s for the heads look really good especially the low lift numbers. The exhaust side is he weak point but they are still looking pretty fair. We should be taking the motor to the dyno next month. The last two big inch med riser set up Blair did were 800hp. My avg intake flow is better but my exhaust is down. I'm hoping for low 700s but the goal was a broad powerband with lots of torque not peak hp. Jay Brown a multiple Drag Week winner and self admitted FE nut and dam good engine builder in his own right posted Blairs last dyno sessions on his site. http://fepower.net/simplemachinesfor...hp?topic=222.0 2012 rolls around and I start searching around for a shop to help me bring the suspension up to snuff for all this power. I dragged my car off to meet some guys in AZ. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...2chassis-1.jpg I have some other parts I've collected. Some Willwood 14" rear 4 piston brakes, an ISIS harness, a Ron davis radiator. Once the chassis is build and I get the car back home I need to make some more final decisions. Wheel and tire sizes I'm close. 19 front and 20 rear. The rear is bugging me because 28" to 28.5" is the height I want. I'd like to do a 335 or 345 but selection in that width width with the height I want is limited. The front should be easy. 26.5"-27" tall and as wide as will fit with the new chassis. Wheel choice is the other hard one. I like the NewGen Lites and the Forgline Harbinger47s. I also like the idea of doing a billet dog dish or even the GT40 indy style wheel. Something that stays with the late 60s early 70s race vibe. The car will retain all the stock style trim. I want to paint it the original all business color of Jade Black in the stripped Cobra trim style. Like this. No matter what the wheels will be black or dark argent. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...jadetorino.jpg Once the chassis is done I'll start a build thread. |
Look forward to the progress on your car. Mine was that color originally and that is one of my few choices when it gets re painted. That fastback looks sweet in that color.
Wheel choice is tough, I lost a lot of sleep when choosing mine. I'm sure whatever you choose will look killer! Good luck on the next phase in your build. |
Quote:
Thanks Jason. I'm partial to the color. If my car looked as clean as yours I'd have a hard time justifying paint. I remember when you were choosing your wheels. I think I may have weighed in on your thread. Wheel can really make or break a car, and the bank$$$$$$. I'm thinking Intros......... |

I can move it back if you like. Great car. |
Well thats cool. There is a few of us Torino guys here. Is RS doing a full chassis or just the susp. ?
How about a few pics of your Bronco, I have a 69 Torino and early Bronco also. |

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...97215866957536 The plan is for them to do a full chassis for me. I was running an RRS strut setup and stambar sway bar up front and leafs with a FaysII watts link and caltracks out back. I needed to tie the subframe together and wanted to improve the ride out back and replace teh crappy stock power steering setup. Looked at doing a few things and decided on a full chassis. They just got it to the shop last week so we'll see what they come up with. Yes the Bronco I built for my wife. That also stalled my Torino. I still have some stuff to do on that. She loves it though. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...herylsride.jpg Plenty of us Bronco nuts out there http://classicbroncos.com/forums/index.php |

RS doing the heavy lifting
Phil and the guys at the RS started on the chassis of my Torino this week. I better start planning a road trip to pick it up. That day will be here soon when I'm back to wrenching on it.

Glad someone with talent is doing the fab work on my car this time.

Killer car man... and love that motor!
|
Nice car its going to be a sweet ride. I like those early Bronco's it looks nice.
|
I'm going to be watching this one! Hope to see it around SoCal when it is roadworthy. There really aren't enough pro touring Fords around here.

Awesome build.

Looks like one hell of a game plan to me. Us old school guys have to stick together.

Yes son they call that a Dominator.... It's a carb.... all cars used to have them. No there isn't any electronic engine management system... Yes it's crude but it hauls ass.... Hopefully one day you can embarrass me at the track. |
I'm tired of beating up on all them LS engines anyway.
How much does that block way? Sounds like you are running a 4.310 bore? I'll be interested to see what you come with for compression and cam specs. Make sure you put a road race pan on that baby and an oil cooler. You are going to make some HEAT road racing that big block.:D When is the engine scheduled for completion? |

Basic engine specs. Cast iron TP heads by Blair Patrick the intake flows @ 173 @ .200 and hits 343 by .700. Not super huge but the avg number is pretty dam good. the exhaust is the weak point but some step headers will help it out there. Plug adapter to run the late model style 14mm plugs and put the electrode closer to the center of the combustion chamber. T&D rocker set up and custom Smith pushrods. Robert Pond Al block, sidoiler copy with billet interference main caps and improved head studs and cross bolts. Crower steel crank and 6.70 Crower rods with BBC journals. Custom CP pistons zero deck height. Custom ground solid roller. I don't have the specs in front of me but around 260/272 @ .050 with just over .600 lift. Crower lifters. Aviad 4 stage dry sump oil system. I will probably run a cooler on teh return from the tank. I have two intakes to choose from. I will dyno it with both. A single plane tunnelport dominator flange intake from the NASCAR program with a 1050 2 stage Holley Dominator or a single plane tunnelport 2x4 intake with a set of 660 Holley centersquirters. Fired of by an MSD distributor and digital 6 box. Blair builds FE (428/427 based) SS and Stockers for class drags which he has been a record holder in. He had a 511 with 13 to 1 and high riser heads with dual fours pull 854hp and 753 tq last month on the dyno. My heads have better avg intake flow but give up some on the ex than that mill. 700hp for mine isn't a stretch. |
^^ Now this is the type of motor I enjoy reading about.
Hurry up and finish it. |
Can't wait to see it done, that's going to be one bad FE!
What kind of time frame you looking at before getting the car back with the new chassis? |
I love a Torino with Intros!
 :woot: |

Maybe May? I plan on having the motor on the dyno in May. Lot to do once I get the pieces back home. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...a/rearrail.jpg Quote:
Well as much as they would be my first choice, I mean we know they can make any car special  ; Goolsby has worked out a build theme with Phil that includes airjackers and slapper bars......:D I need to look at some polished slots. Maybe I'll use the Intros on my Pacer. |

FE - big time props for your vision and build plan. Im looking forward to seeing this monster coming out of a corner under full throttle ...

Saw you went with a cast iron TP head. Does anyone (besides Dove) cast an aluminum TP head? |
You ain't playin...:D
The only thing I'd say is that cam is a little knarly for low rpm cruising in overdrive. I run a 252/260 @ .050. 110 LSA Good low end torque but it pulls to 6800 no problemo. Peak power at 6200. |
Having had a 428 Mach 1 in high school, I'll always have a soft spot for FE motors. I'm looking forward to seeing this car come together:thumbsup:

Two companies make AL SOHC heads and Blue thunder, Pond, Shelby, Edelbrock, Dove all cast Med riser style heads but only Dove does the TP. Plan on a lot of epoxy with the Dove stuff. The Iron castings I got were really nice and the guy had the Dominator intake so I jumped on them. If I wanted to drop a bunch more $$ on filling the floors of the exhaust I could be looking at a 800+hp mill. At some point I needed to say the motor was enough and put the cash into the chassis. And that Mach you built a couple years ago is beautiful.:hail: In HS back in the 80s I had a 69 Firebird with Herb adams bars, Global West arms,WS^ steering box, 16x8 Ronals with Gatorbacks and a Poncho with a muncie. Torquey motor just like the FE super fun. Quote:

I wouldn't take Dove heads even if they were given to me. |
