My car is and will be all home built except maybe paint.

70TWO NOVA 08-13-2007 01:51 PM

I do everything on my cars including paint and body (still learning though). The only things I dont do are trans re-builds, ring and pinion set-up and upholstery. I do want to eventually learn upholstery though

z4me69 08-13-2007 02:36 PM

i build my own. i do everything thats the only way i would have it .writing a check to build a car takes the fun out of it for me

slck6t9 08-13-2007 02:56 PM

Mine also was all home built except paint.

eville 08-13-2007 03:31 PM

Home built here.
A friend of mine did paint and body (in his garage at home)
I farmed out: engine machine work, upholstery, rear end build and front end alignment.

GHOSTDANCER 08-13-2007 03:48 PM

Eville, that's a sharp ride you have. Got anymore pics ?

Building mine at home aswell! love feeling of the mini accomplisments each evening, plus not sure i would find anyone anal enough to do the detail stuff i like in a car well except for maybe Troy but thats a check i would not want to right!:unibrow:

Patrick 08-13-2007 04:48 PM

With the exception of paint, mine has been built in my garage.

Steve Chryssos 08-13-2007 04:50 PM

I'm saving up for a Johnson's Hot Rod Shop build. I have a long way to go. But then again, I have plenty of blank checks.

HotRod68Camaro 08-13-2007 04:51 PM

home built besides paint and body.

Hdesign 08-13-2007 05:23 PM

As much as I can at home, including paint (hopefully), though I'll probably have someone stitch up the seats.

TonyG 08-13-2007 06:00 PM

Haven't got started on mine just yet...lol.. But it will be all be done by me.

WicKeD_SS 08-13-2007 06:30 PM

100% Home built

I pretty much do all my own work, I'll admit it's not as perfect as most of you guys buy I'm taking my time. I am sending it out for the mini tubs and possibly the interior.

slownova 08-13-2007 08:22 PM

garage built, pro built its all in your head. every pro basictly started in a garage also. least thats what i tell myself. i built this car (frame off) in a garage with no power and minimal tools. then again i was 19 at the time and one thing lead to another. all done besides paint...

67SuperSnake 08-13-2007 09:14 PM

I did all the metal, mechanical, electrical, etc I did most of the body, but I did not do:

Media blasting
Finish body work or paint
Engine build (815hp requires a lot of specialty tools)
Front & rear glass

I would hate to try doing a car without a lift or air compressor/tools.

Home built for me in my opinion. In general I do all my own engine building and tuning, paint, wiring, all assembly work, pretty much everything other than stitching on the interior and machine work on the engine. I do accept help sometimes on some of these things depending on time tables.

I work on mine in my 8000 sq ft garage everyday.

awr68 08-13-2007 10:44 PM

Yep me too!

Most of my camaro build will be done by me in my garage..although it's at race rodz getting painted right now! :unibrow:

race-rodz 08-14-2007 12:37 AM

if rodger's counts as a "garage"...then anthony's car is still being garage built while sitting as my place for paint:unibrow:

100% home built thus far, Includes body and chasis fabrication and some paint. Engine machine work and Interior will probally be farmed out. I may have to farm out the paint, cause my garage is not big enough and attached to the house. (makes the house smell for days!)

ironworks 08-14-2007 12:02 PM

I think the whole owner built concept is commendable, but at some point no one can do it all. I would give a check writer hot rodder more props than a guy who builds a piece of junk in his garage and paints it with brush because he can do all by hmself.

One of my favorite cars of all time is a red 64 falcon sprint convertible with a side oiler 427 that the owner built the whole thing except headers, exhaust and rollbar. He built his own mustang II style front end and rear suspension before everyone made kits. He painted it and did the stiching also. He did so well that Super rod gave him a top 100 like 7 years ago. It took him 12 years to build the car, but it is bad ass.

At some point if you build a nice enough car in your garage, people are going to ask you to build something for them in a shop not your garage. That is how I got started. I out grew the garage and driveway and rented a small shop and 7 years later I have a shop bigger than I ever imagined. I could never fit all the tools I have in my little 2 car garage.

Sales@Dutchboys 08-14-2007 12:04 PM

Home built besides the interior.

I agree Ironworker. My plan has always been to do the whole job myself. been a painter for 20 years so that's no problem. The body work I have learned over the years building my own cars at the shop with bodymen supervising. Now I'm into the metal work and its coming along just slowly. I plan to try the interior electric and motor my self as well. But I got to tell you With out the help of most of you guys I would have not tackled the things I have done to this car. We got some real great shops on here that I can call anytime to ask a question. It's funny when I was in the shop we were always told the customer goes to the manager not the men in the shop. This go around I am having my tub work and rear taken care of by Jason at Gforce. and Frank ( prodogy) Has really held my hand the hole way. I'm trying to get this wone done so I can enjoy it. The next one I'm hoping to have the guts to do the whole thing.

How about RV pad built

I've been working on the Torino in my side yard. Maybe someday I'll grow up and have a three car garage.

TA219 08-15-2007 09:26 AM

I am building mine in a 2 car garage :) It will come out to be painted at a friends shop who has a booth but the car will never set in a "professional" shop for anything, or that is the plan anyways.

Yes,,, I would like to see your house ?? How many sq.ft .???

Lance-w 08-15-2007 11:22 AM

My cars are entirely built in my garage, painted in my garage, etc. The only thing I farm out is the machine work on the engine. I'd do that too if I had the machines :) There's a couple of reasons I do my own work. Labor is free so I have more money for parts and it takes a lot of money! I usually have issues with other peoples ideas of quality also......

x2 I sure as hell wouldn't care i'd be in the garage all day. My fiance would only need 1,000 or so square feet to cook my meals and keep me warm :unibrow:

Every inch of Hammerhead was built at home by myself.
It's my sanity!

ironworks 08-16-2007 08:02 AM

Yeah TCI sells it, it is just not in their catalog. You have top ask. It is skill level 2.

ProTouring442 08-17-2007 05:00 AM

Most of mine was done in my parent's garage... then they moved. It will be finished in my attached garage. I just finished a "shed," 12X24 with one side for storing lawn stuff, and the other as a workshop. I had to do this so my wife could still park her car in the other half of the attached garage.

Shiny Side Up!
Bill

Derek69SS 08-17-2007 03:52 PM

The only paid labor on my car so-far is the shortening and balancing of my driveshaft... Everything else was done by me, or done for free with the help of family and friends.

This winter, I'm going to have someone else re-cover my seats though.
