many turbo questions
Hello guy's i'm in the process of buying a car from a member here and also want to start planning the build. I have question's cuz i'm new to turbo's and want to do this right the first time. My first question is will a crate motor (ZZ4-ZZ383) work with a twin turbo setup. What about tran's, auto or manual or does it make different. I would like an auto but if the manual would work better then that's what i'll do. The car will be something i drive but also hit the track ever so often. And last were is a good place to buy turbo's.
thank's i'm sure i'll have more question's later. |

Any motor can be good for turbo's if its got the correct parts inside it. Do you want to source a custom kit or buy and off the shelf setup? |
Thank's for the reply, see i do'nt know if the ZZ4 or ZZ383 is good enough cuz i dont know anything about turbo's. As for buying im not sure there either. If you could show me some site's that sale turbo's and kit's.

Pick up Corky Bells "Maximum Boost" and go to one of his websites - http://www.bellengineering.net/ Also check out http://www.bankspower.com/twin-turbo-products.cfm for some info on a kit. Gale and Corky in my opinion are the ones to learn from. The best way to turbo a car is to do the research and determine which setup is best for YOU. What do you feel comfortable with fuel injected, carb blow through, super charger, turbo, etc. Take the time and you'll only buy things once and enjoy the car much more. |
When it comes to trannys it doesn't matter if it is a manual or auto. If it is for drag racing purposes an auto would be better due to not lossing as much boost in between shifts.

you guys are being very helpfull
so i might just build a motor then buying a crate engine if i would have to change parts anyway. |

About this time last year I finished up a DIY turbo build on my 93 mustang that had a stock 302sbf short block with alum. heads and 150k miles. At 9psi it put down 532rwhp with out a dyno tune, it took about 3 months to build and about 3k. I had no turbo experience when we started and with help from a friend (mechanical engineer) it was a breeze. I also used alot of info from turbomustangs.com (not just for mustangs now). Just make sure that you get a good wideband or a/f guage, do a boost leak down test, and do the best that you can to keep your under hood temps down. You can't bet the feel of a turbo and the car had very good street manners. That was one of the cars that I wish I would not of sold. Here are a couple pics, when we were completely finished the engine bay looked alot cleaner.

Here are a couple videos of when we first cranked it over.

That is a nice setup, what size turbo is that. I've been to that forum before a few times they have some nice car's there. Id like to make around 1000-1200hp and still be able to drive cross country.

K i'm makeing a list of thing's i'll need and i will put those item's on it. I still need to get the car home and do a look over then start on the body. After that i'm going to do the suspension then the drive train will be next. The interior and paint will be last cuz i'm not sure which color i'm goin to paint it. I might keep it primed for awhile before i paint it.

yea i would like it to be a twin turbo but if the t3/t4 would be pushing it then i wont worry about them. the most power ive own was a 500hp 350 in a 67 camaro when i was 19. so two t70 wuld be a better choice.....

i see what you saying, and i am thankfull. you are right i might just settle for 800hp or the stage 2 engine 1000hp. My budget on the motor plus turbo setup is $10,000.00 would that make a reasonable power point.
thanks for all the help you are giveing me........... |

WOW now that is nice, im so undesided to go turbo or n/a, i dont mine going over my budget if it gives me what i want. i guess when its time to buy an engine i will flip a coin.

I will tell you one thing you can't beat the feel of a turbo!!! If you look at the bottom of the page that 540ci has a street package which drops the c.r. down to 9.5:1 which would be good for n/a (plenty of hp also) now and turbo later (when you can afford or just ready).
|
That's not a bad idea, i was thinking the samething. I can alway's lose some of the weight in the front end to help with the size of the big block. I might just go with one turbo if i can get another 200-300hp out of it if not then two. I think the drive train and the suspension w/brake's will cost the most out of the whole build.
