Recommendation for Exhaust
Getting ready to buy my exhaust but trying to research first. What brand of stainless steel mufflers and exhaust do you guys recommend for a custom '69 Camaro with a 400hp small block? I would like a real aggressive sound. I have looked @ flowmaster but they do not sell stainless components. I have also looked @ spin tech and borla. Who should I go with?
Thanks, Shawn |
We have been selling and installing a lot of Magnflow and really like it. Great product at a great price. Love the sound.

The flowmaster hushpower is 304 stainless, you can also go to stainlesssteelmufflers.com and Edelbrock makes a 304 muffler too. There are alot of options. Stainlessworks.net also has 304ss mufflers.

If you want a very loud and "raw" sound then Spintech.. |
I personally love the sound of Borla. Really racey.

Thank You
Thanks for the prompt reply guys. Any information is helpful. I have to say I have been looking into the spintech mufflers and would like an aggressive sound. I want the best of both worlds, to be noticed when pulling into a parking lot full of cars @ a carshow, but able to take a little cruise with my wife and enjoy a conversion.
The guys @ spintech have informed me if I want loud, go with the pro street muffler. The sportsman street is their next muffler which is a little quieter followed by the sportsman XL muffler which is even quieter. Can anyone give any more input on these mufflers? Also, should I go with 3 inch or 2.5 inch? Engine builder says I should put 3 inch all the way back. All the muffler people suggest a 2.5 inch system. What do you think? Thanks, Shawn |
I am going with 3" all the way on my car if that helps at all.
|
400hp there is no reason to go bigger than 2.5"

Scott, that sounds nasty good!

Scott
Scott,
What size exhaust do you recommend, 3 or 2.5 inch? Shawn |
a 4 stroke engine will always always perform better with less resistance on the exhaust.. the less resistance, the less pumping loss.. if this wasnt the case, no one could sell a cutout...
so on a full length exhaust, especially with mufflers you should go as big as practically possible.. with the added benefit of deeper and better sound.. the only place you should considder a smller diameter is if you run a merge collector... i have installed a dual 3.5 inch on a 64 skylark with a 400 Hp SB buick. and it was the meanest sounding exhaust ive ever heard... low mean.. rumble, |

Granted you probably would never know the difference on most of these high horsepower engines we are running but if you were to do a comparison with a good muffler and correct size pipe vs straight exhast I bet you like the drivability of a true system. |
Which Muffler?
Scott,
What size exhaust and muffler is in your video clip "startup with spintech mufflers"? Is it too loud inside the car to enjoy with your wife? Does it draw peoples attention where ever you go? Shawn |

I have the Sportsman XLs 2.5" on my jaguar( cammed and ported LT1) and really they are alittle loud but not bad. I would say they give a perfect level most guys are looking for on the street. The pro streets sound great with a high compression big block, but damn there loud. If you want any more info feel free to contact me |
Those are some great Spintech sound clips. Anyone have some good Magnaflow clips? Like Shawn, I've narrowed my selection down to 3" Spintech Sportsman Streets vs. 3" Magnaflows (for a 600 hp BB). Jury is still out ...

Another vote for 3" SpinTechs here...

I love the sound of those spin tech's...hmmmmm:)
I also really like the sound of the borla's Paul |
SPIN TECHS, SPIN TECHS, SPIN TECHS!!!
You can't beat the performance, the sound and the price for that matter. The more cubic inches you have, the better the muffler will perform! |
I've been doing some web searches for Magnaflow sound clips (the clips from the magnaflow.com web site stink). Here are the best ones I've found so far on YouTube. This guy has a '69 camaro with a 427 ci small block and 3" Magnaflow system. Sounds good (IMO), but might be a bit "brappy" for my taste. You guys be the judge:

I have 3 inch
duals all the way back with an H pipe and the stainless magnaflows. Running and LS1.
They sound fantastic and are off the charts cool at 7 grand. I would do it again. No drone inside the car. |

We manufacture USA components to build your own custom exhaust systems including headers and muffler systems. Check out the website: www.coneeng.com
We just helped out Fuller Hot Rods with a system for a custom '61 Impala on a Art Morrison chassis. Runs a 572/650 crate motor. He designed 2 1/8" primaries into a merge collector. You can see the car being built on 2 Guys Garage this fall. And if you can't build them yourself we are building a referral listing to help you find someone to help out. If you know of a good builder let us know so we can get them listed. |
