Staggered Rims Size or Same???

Just looking for your opinions again...

What would you guys use on a 70's challenger/cuda build
1. staggered 19/20's
or
2. 20's all around???

Thanks

PS--The new shelby/challenger/camaro's will all be available with 20's on all four wheels I'm pretty sure....just food for thought.

I think once you get past 18s staggered looks better. I'm sure you'll get very different opinions on this one.

andrewmp6 01-26-2008 07:51 PM

Im not a fan of big rims i won't go over a 16 unless to clear the brakes. But each there own.

Vegas69 01-26-2008 08:41 PM

You need to stagger to keep some sidewall in the front. Viper 19/18 stagger Vetter 19/18 stagger ZR1 20/19 stagger

rwhite692 01-26-2008 08:58 PM

Depends on the car.

JayR 01-27-2008 09:58 AM

I'm with Vegas69.

The Challenger and Camaro concept cars were staggered diameters for style and aesthetics but I suspect going same all the way around on the production cars was an economic move to keep them relatively affordable as well as having huge front wheelwells engineered from the offset to allow for them but no-budget supercars like what Vegas69 mentioned and many many others all run staggered diameters. It also helps allow extra room for steering up front as well while still getting down low.

If you were going 18s all the way around, then I wouldn't stagger because 18s will fit up front but if the rear diameter crowds the front like a 20 would, then default to a stagger like the supercars.

awr68 01-27-2008 08:55 PM

I'm a big fan of keeping the same sidewall height front and rear...and filling the fender wells at the same time. Some cars you can do this with the same diameter wheel and others need to be staggered.

What I don't like is going overboard on rear wheel/tire height just to tuck the wheel...ya know the Muscle Machines look! I'm more about function...not what todays trend is...trends don't last, I try to stay more timeless with my builds.

Looks good, I would have dropped it about another 2 or 3 inches though

gionni 01-28-2008 11:01 PM

JohnC 01-29-2008 06:15 AM

Tire rotation.

Tony@AirRideTech 01-29-2008 07:49 AM

I personally like an 18/20 or 19/20 stagger. The problem with a 19/20 stagger is usually trying to find matching tire for front and rear. especially if you are trying to get some real width in the back. :unibrow:

They have directional tires with different width rims...that can't be it.

That's right--I stand corrected. I was thinking of another cuda.

PS--Wow 315's on a 10 inch rim!:wow:

awr68 01-30-2008 09:11 PM

I had 315's on a 10...it's doable, but I didn't care for the look. I now have a 315 on a 11.5 and like it much better!

I have staggered 17" and 18" on a 1970 442 tribute.

Let me be the 1st to tell you that the bigger and wider the rims, the harder it is to rip em loose.
With the factory 2.78 open rear, and 15" SSIII ims I could chirp these 1st, 2nd no problem with 425ft lbs of torque.
I put on the 18" rears with Nitto 555R's, and I couldn't chirp em at all. I then put in a posi 3.73 and still can't chirp em.
Not bothering to change my converter because an LSX / T56 is going in soon anyways.

I think 19 and 20" is just way too big for the classic body lines of that car.
Modern Mopar's look great with 20's, because their body lines were built for it.
MOST classic cars look cartooned with them tucked in like that. But to each there own. Just my opinion.

For me, I think you should see the profile of the tire all around. When it's tucked in the fender, I hate it.

Not a fan. I think it would look better with 17's or 18s' and untucked.

I guess I'm the odd man out here. I say 20's all the way around. :wow: I have 20 x9's and 20x11's. Lowered some and they don't look too big to me neither has other people said they were too big. But, I just like to cruise. No corner carving or track days for me.

elitecustombody 01-30-2011 03:04 PM

I would do 19's and 20s tucked and slammed
