What's your excuse??
I think we all have a passion to build our cars the way we want them but it seems it takes ALOT longer for some of us (myself included) to be able to get them "done". This got me thinking about what or if there was a common denominator that keeps us from building our dream cars.
My excuse lately is Im mid-stride remodeling our house and putting on a new roof. Money is always an issue but money can be made when needed. Time seems to be my biggest barrier. So, what keeps you from working on your car? Chris:cool: |
nothing:)

Money.

Work. I travel for a living and will be gone for weeks at a time. Of course I have weeks at a time at home to, but that's my excuse.
Stupid job.... |
well im 21 and am a bodyman at a local collision center and i work on my car by myself and when problems supercede my knowledge i have to wait for help whether that be my dad or my boss ect... and money is always the problem my project is at a standstill now im broke b ut will be accepting donations

Time is the biggest thing for me. I am 3.5 hours away from my car. $ is a key factor, although I enjoy the hunt for finding parts at a cheaper rate and saving money. I almost get as much thrill out of searching for parts on the net and at swap meets, as I do working on my car.
Time and money is the key factors until I get out of school. It will be done one day! |
Well I am building a shop to work in but winter came before I got power and heat in it, now I'm working 60 hr weeks and taking 12 college credits.I'm lucking to even check things out here.:wow:
|
I have too many cars and not enough room to work on them. That should be cured this year however, we bought some property to build a house and BIG shop on. I outgrew my 3-car garage after 6 months of living here.
|
Long hours at work, household projects, and a lack of work space. My 2 car garage is packed tight with the Camaro, Chevelle, and everything else. I live in a townhouse with a homeowners association, so I'm already pushing it with the daily driver and work car parked outside. I could really use a 3 car garage, but can't afford it with real estate costing what it does here.

Time... I have two teenage kids that are constantly eating up my Saturdays and Sundays, then the summer comes and it's the Beach the Boat and all the fun things that go along with summer. Money too...
|
If I ever actually get one done, then I'd be sad, because I'd have nothing to do...

Time and money
It takes my time to earn the extra money to fund the project. The original build schedual was three years......... That was five years ago. Now when asked I use the fail safe statement of "before I retire". Then there is the "higher priorities", wife wanted a new car, needed new windows in the house, Etc. Those items ate half the Extra money this year. But it is as much about the journey as the arrival.

[QUOTE=Bulldog68]Long hours at work, household projects, and a lack of work space. My 2 car garage is packed tight
Have to say I know your pain. A lack of space(single garage with my car 2 single seat airplanes, motors transmissions ect), a 75 hr work week, and 3 kids going through university. pretty much takes up all the assets needed to work on my project. despite that I am making glacial progress. |
Time, there's just not enough hours in the day. Sleep is overrated. lol
|
Time, time ,time. I own a collision shop,im hands on 80+ hour work weeks are the norm.I always put my buisness first. Now I have the means to do my car the way I want , but it still comes down to time. So this year I hired a extra man to help with the work load and free up some time for me. I 've had my car for three years now and just cut my first check to Frank at Prodigy, now its go time. I'm just happy I do'nt have answer the same question over and over "When are you going to start working on your Camaro" well I can say NOW!!!

Customer cars take a priority for me.
My personal projects seem to be second in line to that. By the time I find time to do my own, the current trends change the original design and I need to start over. All my customer cars are designed and treated as if they were my own so that makes up for my lack of a personal ride. |
I am too busy driving it! :D :D
Actually, with a finished car things are easier, although I do not do alot of the work myself, when things go wrong it tends to be electrical or transmission related and well over my head. So I have a trustworthy restoration shop that is great to me, but charges me 4 times what I make an hour, so sometimes I have to put things off! Oh, and I am also two hours away at school most of the time, or their is a foot of snow outside its warm garage! Let it be spring!! Tim |
For me, it's the cold weather. I just can't bring myself to get out in the garage when it's in the 30's. Although I do have a heater (waste oil) it takes quite a while to warm things up. Steve (HRBS) has been doing his part by making me feel bad for not getting more done. This weekend I should be able to make some progress.

Money and time here too :( .

Time and then space. A major events to just clear out a area to comfortably work on a car. Then once to space is made never have time so the space shrinks.

Time. Our little girl (21 mos.) is our priority these days...

I started my project about 2 years ago.
Things that have slowed any progress on it was. 1. moving to a new state. 2. remodeling a house to sell. 3. build new house to live in. 4. extra money to buy parts for the car. 5. finding a reputable place to get body work done when your new to the area and not get caught in paint jail. 6. lack of motivation to work on it after seeing it dormant for a year. |
We bought our 69 in Dec of 06, other than making it run/drive it still dosent have side windows installed and Ive been buying parts for it since we got it but havent been able to spend a single minute working on it. Just getting frustrated and since misery loves company I started this thread.
I guess the next question is what do we do to change it? Most of us sound like our priorities are about where theyre supposed to be but I know Im not getting any younger and its been YEARS since Ive been able to have a nice project car see any attention. My brother in law died last night due to complications of a heart transplant and he was only 45. He and my sister have a 59 fairlane that we always talked about "modernizing" into a nice street car. (sister's first car) Thinking about this more, I sure wouldnt mind having a couple dream cars done before I check out of this life. I enjoy doing the work myself so paying someone else is out. If someone figures this out please let the rest of us in on it..,. :lateral: Chris:cool: |
How about this one...BAD LUCK!! My project has been an uphill battle ever since I started. Between the engine guy and another company I’m not going to mention I’ve actually lost money on this project.

Time and money,
I'm on the road all the time so dont have much chance to play. I doesn't matter I'm not in a rush. |

All I can say is stay focused and just get out there and do it. It will be worth it in the end. I'm taking the car to the first show next weekend! (Detroit Autorama)Can't wait! |
Mostly Time and the kids, Money I can come up with when I need it thanks to a great wife. I spend alot of time on the house as well. I figure the house is for the whole family to enjoy. The car is just my toy
|
My main "excuse", if you wanna call it that, is money. Then there's the "no real place to work on it" deal. It sits outside on a gravel driveway at the moment. I'd say time, but at the moment I have no job, so that's not true. But before this, I had zero time to work on the car. But there was always the no money deal. And to think, I just needed to get the car to a point where I wouldn't out drive it all the time....

At the moment it is wifecompensation. I have to do a bathroom before any car work. This is the second bathroom done for compensation. This also affects the economy and budget for the car. A bathroom with Jacuzzi and nice Italian tiling costs like a healthy LS7.
I am now doing the tiling so it would be ready in a few weeks. Then... Jan |
Time, Money, and the fact that I'm just tired!! It's been 6 yeas of this...that's just too long!!

My Excuse: I have no money.
