70-73 Camaro, what's the widest rims/tires I can use?
Hello people,
glad I found Lat-G, the cars here are incredible, the time and workmanship that goes into some of the cars amazes me. It's a place I keep coming to for inspiration and help in keeping me motivated on my car. I have a 73' R/S Camaro, it's dropped 2" rear and 2" spindles in front. What are the widest rims/ties that will work without major mods? I don't mind minor rolling/trimming. I'm looking at 18x8 front and 18x10 rear or 20x9 rear? And backspacing, exact tire sizes please, I'm hoping you guys can save me a few days of trial and error swapping. =) Any help, pics, advice is greatly appreciated. |
for the front 18*8 4.5 b/s will work no mods ( may hit sway bar on full lock a little) 255/40 for the rear 18*9.5 5.5bs with 285/40 will work with rolling the lip to get a 10 would check your car mat need to go 5.75??? again check your car but they should work and if not just get a BFH

I have a 73 camaro with 18x8 and 18x10s. With a 285-35-18 tire in back no rubbing and I am going to go with a 295-35-18 next but I will roll the lip.
Looks great |

Can you post the specs on your wheels Back spacing Also can you post pics of your car ps - i have a fender roller if your interested. |
Ill take some pics this week.
Front 18x8 with 4.5bs backs are 18x10 with 5.5bs. Boyd Coddington Junk Yard Dogs. |
18x8 up front with a 4.75" backspace, 245/40/18 tire, and a 18x10 rear with a 5.75" and a 285 would work great! That is what we recommend. We're running a huge sale on our wheels right now too... up to 20% off wheels. Check it out!

Exactly. On 2nd gen cars, The factory 8" wheels are 4.5 backspace, so for the front if you deduct 3.5 from you wheels size you will have your backspace, on the rear deduct 4" from your wheel size as the rear wheels were sucked in a bit from the factory. So front 8" wheel = 4.5" backspace 8.5" wheel = 5" backspace Rear 9" wheel = 5" backspace 9.5" wheel = 5.5" backspace |
okay so does anyone have any pics of the rear tire - side view and from behind
|
Frank,
The T/A's could have the 8" wide wheels from the factory, the Z28's only came with 7". I'd have to check on the backspacing....would a good guess be 4"? John |
I could post a pic or two of my 81 camaro with 18x8 4.5 bs front and 18x9.5 5.5 bs rears if you'd like. It's not a 70-73 but you may still get an idea of how those sizes look.
|
Zedzag,
Would love to see them. I'm thinking of 18 X 8" F and 18, 19, or 20 X 10 R for my '79. Jon has a sale of Rushforth wheels that I want to get in on that I really like, but I don't know the backspace yet on my stock 10 bolt with C5 brakes. Thanks! |
Yes PICS PLEASE

Rolling the lip really doesn't help on 2nd gens you will have more of an issue rubbing the outer wheel house than rubbing the lip. Ride height will have an effect on what you can get away with, also what tire brand you use. I know they should be the same no matter what brand you use but Michelins tend to be a little narrower than say Nittos. I have 2 cars with 275/40 -18's on the rear the Nittos are very tight w/ 18x8 4.75 bs and the Michelins are not. The car has been lowered 3" so it limits the front size 18x7 4.5 bs. w/235-40. I have no rubbing on the front a very slight rub in the rear under hard compression of the springs but not enough to damage the tire.

Thanks for the pics guys
keep'em coming is that true that tubbing = no stock rear seat? And Ric when you going to sell me the parts  |

335 - then you lose 6 inches 315 - you lose 3 inches 305 - you lose 1.5 inch but it's a lot of money for a small gain |
so what size = no stock seat use?
|
you just have to narrow the stock seat.
|
wheel tire
2 in entension in the wheel house without putting in a full tub
18x8.5 front 245/40 18x12 rear 275/30 / no rail mods |
245/45/18 front
275/40/18 rear http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/e...g/DSCN3977.jpg http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/e...g/DSCN3974.jpg |

I'm running rear 18x10 w/ 5.75 bs 285/35/18 rolled lip but could easily fit 295/30/18. In front 18x8 w/ 4.5 bs 245/40/18 but had to modify the inner fender.
I'm running DSE 3" drop leafs in the rear and adjustable QA1's in the front with stock spindles and wilwood hubs |

It was a big decision for me to either mini tub and go with 335's or stay stock and tuck the biggest I could. When I priced 12" wide rims and 335's that made the decision for me. I run a carbed LS1 with over 400hp and off the line it hooks up great with the 285's. In my opinion, unless you are doing heavy autocross or running high hp, the amount of rubber you can fit with 10" wide rims is plenty |
