Digital Camera

I'm looking at a Nikon CoolPix P5100 digital camera for all around use. Anyone have this or have any recommendations.

Here are two reviews.

I have no experience with Nikon but they seem good. I find a 3x zoom camera quite limiting for all around use. We have a Panasonic with a 12x zoom and its great! A Little bigger than the Nikon though. There is a few 10x zoom cameras around that are about that size though.

10 megapixel is getting a little large and not really needed for normal printing up to 8x10

I just bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30. Great little camera, fits in your pocket. It has a 28mm wide-angle lens. I took it to the Detroit Autorama and didn't have to back way up to get the whole car in the picture. Pictures turned out great. It has 7.2 megapixels and it takes pretty good video also. Cost was less than $150. Great for all around use. I highly recommend it.

I've been kicking around getting a digital SLR but lugging it around doesn't seem like much fun.

I had a Nikon 5700 a few years ago and the flash went out within a year. It was still under warantee, but i was never really happy with it. I have a Canon S3 now which has a 12x optical zoom and 6 megapixals. It has proven to be a great camera so far. There is a new version out now with 8 megapixals and a few more bells and whistles.

I got a Nikon d40x at x-mas. Love it, easy to use, great hi res pics and its lightweight, but you'll have a tuff time getting it in ur pocket!

Nice! What lenses are you using?

I have a Nikon D70, and I love it. I don't mind lugging it around at all, really.

I usually lug around at the least a D200 body with a 50mm prime, 18-70,a 70-300 VR, an SB-800 and a light meter. I actually feel naked without it, and that's just a fraction of the gear I take with to a shoot or to the track.

Turn 12 @ RA - unfortunately a cloudy / overcast day, but still gets the point across.

http://gchildersphoto.com/DSC_0536.jpg -larger resolution, though still scaled back.

Personally, I'm a Nikon man at heart, but I can't help but hear the siren song of the Canon 500mm F/4 IS USM for motorsports work.

Years ago I carried around a CPX5K as a backup - this is back when your only DSLR choice was pretty much the Nikon D1 ('99). I still have the CPX5K, not the D1 however. That was swapped for a D100, then the D200, though the CPX5K did go back for a board replacement once. For a P&S I had no complaints.

The thing to remember as well is it's not *just* megapixels but also sensor quality & glass. In other words, I'd put the 4.1MP sensor in the D2Hs with a nice lens hanging off it up against an 8mp p&s sensor any day of the week.

As far as that p&S in specific, it looks like a good buy. A much updated version of the CPX5K I used to have, with a lot nicer sensor and more features. The limiting factory obviously will wind up being the ultimate lack of additional lenses - among other things. But for a P&S it doesn't look half bad. And it's a heck of a lot smaller than the tank I used to lug around, that's for sure!

My father in law just picked up a D70 for my mother in law as her new 'point and shoot'. He shoots with a D2X.

I used the D70 this past weekend and it will probably be next on my list. Very easy to use and you can shoot in raw.

Scott,

I also just got a Nikon D40X for Christmas - my first Digital SLR, but I love it!! 10.1 mp, package deal that included both 18-55 & 55-200 lenses, and carrying case. I take it everywhere now... Here's a sample pic - keep in mind I'm still learning EVERYTHING about taking pics but you get the drift...

Do I need to change your screen name from Ryans67deuce to Ryans69camaro? :D

I've been extremely happy with it. like I said, I am a complete novice, but I can't believe some of the pics i have taken with it... For the price - $750 for the pkg, I don't think you can beat it...

Well I finally bought a camera over the weekend though it wasn't the one I was asking about. My wife wanted to keep the cost around $200 and being I just dropped some cash on having my wheels widened I wasn't going to debate with her about the camera. So we agreed on a Canon PowerShot A720 IS.

Now I can update my build thread with pictures.

I got a nice gently used D70 for Christmas, and I LOVE it! I take it everywhere I can, and shoot whatever catches my eye.

Shiny Side Up!

I run a Pentax K100D with a 18-55 and 55-200 lenes. The Image stablization is awesome, you can handhold down to a really slow shutter without blur. Once you get the manual mode down on any DSLR you'll be rockin. I actually do want to go buy a P&S though for times I dont want to risk my DSLR! (parties, ect)

just bought this camera, this is a great site for camera reviews and very unbiased.

Hi Guys

I purchased a used D60 from a friend several years ago and am just getting into it, this is a shot i took of my 9 yr old before i understood this thing, i shot this with a EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, seems ok for an amature.
I'm looking for some editing and managment software of my pictures, any sugestions out there, I will take maybe 1000 pictures on the weekends of her Soccer games and its a bitch to go through.

Thanks
