My new job and our new project car.. woo hoo!

I'm now, officially, the new Technical Editor for Camaro Performers magazine. PHR was fun, but I'm looking forward to the challenge of growing the book. Soon it will be 12 issues, but the best part is that you can now get a subscription.

I will also be writing for Super Chevy and I have three installments on the Fairlane left for PHR.

So, you guys with Camaros be sure to submit for the "Hometown" section. I will also be starting an Under Construction type section.

Thanks to the artistic skills of Ben Hermance we now have a plan for our next project car.. Project Track Rat.

Still working out the details but it will be more affordable Pro-Touring car. Not a dirt cheap car, but a fun and practical car that will most likely have a budget cap, including the car, of $40k. For reference that's barely more than my Fairlane build. No mini-tubs, factory subframe, etc.

Project Track Rat:
http://picsorban.com/upload/trackratlowres.jpg

The car will be painted in a satin blue and the front panels will be CF. Hey, gotta have some style. All trim will be done in some sort of flat/satin look. Nothing crazy on the suspension. G-bar in the back, that sort of deal.

We also have Project Orange Krate in the works for Camaro Performers. It will be a 2nd Gen with the full pro-touring deal done to it (mini-tubs, etc). 427 cui small block (Gen1, not LS7).

Anyways, should be fun.. Camaro owners, make sure you send me your info. We are always hunting for features and for our Reader section.

Sweet! I like the flat look, and the CF will give it a bit extra!

On a 40k P-T build, where do you cut corners? What is the biggest thing that saves money? The engine, suspension upgrades? From the design it looks like body, wheels, trim, ect are all going to be total P-T, but where do you save the big money?

Tim

Rybar 04-11-2008 12:16 PM

Cool news Steve, I'm guessing this is the Camaro you picked up recently? Hey what's the phone number again for a subscription, gotta sign up.

Save on the engine, spend on the suspension, save on not doing mini-tubs and stuff. Save on color sanding and buffing, spend on the CF stuff.

Junkyard LS1 or 5.3L with heads/cam for 450ish hp.

It's a goal to shoot for..

Congrats Steve. I new it was just a matter of time. You certainly have enhanced PHR, really taking the magazine to the next level from where it was at just a few years ago.

Congratulations on the new assignment Steve and good luck with the new build - I look forward to watching it's progress. I hope that you can bring CP to the next level; it's the one magazine that I can truly say I've followed from the beginning..

skatinjay27 04-11-2008 10:00 PM

steve with the 40k budget, will count the cost of parts even if thier free for you, so it will be a car that any reader could built for 40k???

Yea, like the Fairlane... even if I recieved a part for free the retail price of the part was added to the list.

It's actually easier to hit a budget in real life since you can buy used parts and get stuff on sale and GP :)

Best wishes in the new job, Steve. The new project has more relevance , for me anyway and I'm looking forward to ways to use up my credit limits! Just gets better and better for us.

That credit goes to the artist Ben... I just gave him my general idea and he refined the stripe idea and added the GS hashmarks.

Musclerodz 04-12-2008 11:45 AM

very cool Steve. Now I need all your new contact info........

Derek Miller 04-12-2008 12:21 PM

Cannot wait to see some build pics of the car. I saw "Penny" in person at SEMA and would like to say that it was one of my favorites from the show. Are you going to be using a Carbon Fiber lower front valence like on Penny and if so, where do you get them? I do not see them on the Anvil site. Do you plan on running the tall ATS spindles on this car, since you are keeping the original subframe?

Congrats!

Steve,

Congrats on the new job. Looking forward to getting a subscription....even though I do not (currently) own a Camaro. Back in the day, spring 2003, I was lucky enough to have Terry Cole select my Camaro for Camaro Performers and then have Andrew Shear shoot it at LV Speedway. Here is the cover:

Take care,

Congrats Steve. Hope all is well.

Payton King 04-17-2008 07:34 AM

Yep

I am going to be there and I am bringing my car. Plan on running it down the strip and around Road Atlanta...and everything else they will let me do.

You are more than welcome to take it for a spin or two as well. It is always fun to thrash someone else's car. LOL
