Headers/Heat VS. Wiring ?
Any 'new or innovative' heat insulators/materials or tips or tricks for insulating wires (spark plug, sensors, starter, etc.) that run real close to headers and extreme heat areas.
Currently using a insulated foil type wrap secured with zip ties. Works ok, hard to keep 'pristine' looking, and I loose the odd zip tie from heat. Recently melted the fusible link connector (not the link~the connector) from the starter. It became a hot blob and an interesting electrical problem to trace hidden from view. Anything better out there? Was thinking a silicone sleeve tube that would snap over wires would work great. (Like those silicone gloves you can grab hot steal with.... but in tube form?) Damn hard to wrap zip tie and get at some wires and keep them out of heats way! So lets hear tips trick ideas or innovative materials. How do you guys keep those wires hidden, clean, in position and not molten... Thanks! |
I am using the MSD plug wire insulation on my starter wiring and multiple other places. I am also using the foil type other places but using stainless wire straps that won't fail under high heat. Should be some photos in my thread.

Ceramic coating of the headers help some too.

These work ok;

Guess I was hoping for some thing different and techie, but I'll replace my plastic zips ties, a bit of a no brainer there?

Dave we have used this before it works great! On the bottom of the page the "Ultra High temp Fiberglass sleeving" good to 1200 degrees.

Ya that looks good! Have you ever spit it open to put it around a wire? ie. premade installed spark plug wire.

Coating your headers and exhaust for that matter
inside and out will eliminate most if not all of your problems. I have not had any heat/wiring issues...that coating stuff works wonders.

We've had much success with Techflex products. Nice stuff.

Loaded up on various Techflex product today and stainless zip ties.
Thanks for the replies. Payton next time my headers are off I'll for sure consider coating the inside. |
