Need suggestions what companys are building quality LS engines. I want 427 cuin. and prefer to avoid the dry sump system. I would like to keep it at or under 15k and hopefully that includes the ecu. 500 rear wheel hp is the goal. Is my budget short, can this be done?

BTW- I called Katech, 427 re-sleeved block 427 heads and katech torquer cam, 427 intake with injectors , 19k no ECU,no flywheel,no accessories. Too rich for me, these guys must be the best of the best.

Why do you need "build" motor with all the extra hassle when you have a choise of brand new GM performance crate engine with 480 horsepower and i am sure the cost will be close to 10k to have it in your car ..

Okay not 427 but do you think there would be a big difference ?

I would recommend either Bryan @ latemodelengines.com or Erik @ hkracingengines.com to build your 427. Two of the best when it comes to LS engines. I have dealt with Bryan and have nothing but good things to say about him and have also heard a lot of positive things about Erik. Can't go wrong with either. A $15k budget is more than enough and a Katech torquer cam should give you 500rwhp with great streat manners. Stick with a GM LS7 block and GM LS7 heads and you should be well under your budget.

check out mast motorsports they have a couple of 427´s an L92 based and an LS3 based version, both are 5k below your quote and including ECU and tune... if it doesnt HAVE to be a 427 you can get some stout ones in the 500+ HP range for less than 11k all included...

Are you looking for 500 at the motor or wheels? Auto or 6 speed? Have you considered a 402 ci LSX? Some builders are making way more than 500 to the wheels with a 402, L92, l76. Have you looked into SpeedINC? They are located in MI. Jeff Schwartz is another builder who can get you beyond your goal.

I am looking to get close to 500/500 at the rear wheels. It will be a manual transmission. Im trying to learn as much as I can about the ls engines, its all very new to me since Ive been building sb/bb cars since I was 15. Im exploring all options but really want 427 cubes. Im finding that with some companies the bore and stroke really varies in order to get there. I would prefer the 4 inch stroke and 4.125 bore. Im finding it may be more economical to just buy a crate zo6 spend the 1k on the GM ecu/pedal kit and another 750 for peterson resivoir and maybe spend an extra thousand on the katech torquer cam. Perhaps I could save a lot more going with a cammed LS3 dont know what kind of power they make though. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions - Thanks Rich

Can someone tell me if the crate ls3 is available yet? I cant seem to find a price for the 376/480 ls3, everyone has it listed although there is no pricing.

I would call Dan Timm at Wegner Motorsports.

They, Carl Wegner, have built many items for GM Racing, GMPP, Stewart, etc.

Examples :

The GN "spec" engine program for NASCAR.
The "spider" intakes LS-1, LS-7, LS-3, stocking carb AND EFI.
The Stewart water pump. (LS-x)
The blower belt drive for Harrop, with the blower belt first...
Carl Wegner is very respected by GM, NASCAR, and many others.
The shop is close to your area.

Hey....have you tried Golen Engine Service?
They have built a L92 headed, LS2, which was dyno'd at close to 600hp.
The company is reputable and I think they are well within your budget for performance. Take a look at the link below...You should be impressed.

Go with Erik at HK racing engines. He is the best. Period. For 500 rwhp, a ls7 based motor would be ideal. A small cam upgrade(along with appropriate valvetrain) is all that is needed to crack that barrier. It will be the most streetable option to reach that power leve out there without reverting to Forced Induction.:thumbsup:
