Project SCHEVY 2001 Silverado full frame build
Well I've been lurking this site for a while now, and figured I would share my project, as long as it's cool with you guys. I know it's not a pro-touring car, but the plans for this thing is a mean street machine, that can handle well and put it's fair share of power down on the pavement.
April 2007 was the last time I took a bunch of pictures of it, this being two of them. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...22_2007042.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...verado/bg3.jpg July came and after having the trans built the August before I had it blow on me 3 times, all the builder told me were they were bad parts, never got a chance to push the truck much, and was told the trans would hold more than I was asking for, well after the third time I convinced myself I would be careful till I could afford to order a level 5 80e or something similar. Well with my luck it blew again, no reason what so ever I was just on my way to work and it locked up. When the fluid was cold it would move, heated up and it would go anyway. So it went back in my garage, and I convinced myself, not so much my friends, that I was going to tear it completly down and build it frame up. The plans as of right now, a basic over veiw: 2001 Silverado 2wd regular cab shortbed Rolling Chassis - To be designed and fabricated by myself - Factory suspension moved upwards to accommodate lower ride height - Motor moved back and up to transfer weight and clear steering - McGaughys Spindles, RideTech Control arms, and double adjustable shockwaves, Muscle Bar up front - F9100s, double adjustable billet shocks, Satchell adjustable 4-link out back - GM 14bolt 9.5” SF narrowed rearend - Converted to 5x5 Lug Pattern - Powder coated Hammered Black Satin finish, all components gloss black - Custom Fuel Cell Behind rear end - All fuel, air, and brake lines to be hard stainless, with braided to moving parts - Intro Wheels GT Sports 20x8.5 Front w/ Toyo Proxy STII 275/40/R20 - Intro Wheels GT Sports 20x15 Rear w/ MT Sportsman SR 29x18x20 - Wilwood 16” Front Rotors 6 piston calipers - Wilwood 14” Rear Rotors 4 piston calipers - GM HD Hydroboost Brake System Exterior - Water based True Black w/ blue toner - Ceramic Clear Coat (same as new Mercedes) - Body dropped bed 5.5” to hide all suspension components and appear “stock” - Stock Wheel tubs widened to accommodate 20x15s, again to appear “stock” - Rear tailgate will close and open to appear "stock" - Shaved tailgate, license plate, candied and smoked tail lights - Exhaust tips through the roll pan to mimic the front bumper - Escalade Handles - Cal-Vu Mirrors - Front bumper is a modified SS bumper - Hood will be raised across the whole back - Xenarc Headlights with 4300k HIDs - Clear Marker Lenses Interior - All plastic panels will be dyed black, factory satin finish. - Escalade top dash pad, wood grain on passenger side to be painted black, and “Cadillac” replaced by “SCHEVY” - Escalade Dash Bezel - 03 Console w/ T56 shifter while retaining cup holders. - Black headliner, and visors to match - Black Carpeting - Modified Stock Bucket seats, reworked into more of a “race bucket” - Denali Gauges, all interior dash lights to be orange (only color on whole truck, while the rest is black and billet) - Sounds system is TBA, but amp will be hidden along with two 10”shallow mount subwoofers behind each seat. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/CIMG1838.jpg
Originally I modified the stock frame, and finished it besides my shock mounts http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/IMG_2896.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/IMG_2897.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/IMG_2892.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/IMG_2894.jpg But I figured with this extensive of a build I might as well build one from scratch. |
But then I decided I'd rather build my own frame, so I built a table
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0192.jpg Threw this frame on it http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0195.jpg Jigged everything I needed http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0198.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0207.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0264-1.jpg |
Ordered some custom spec rails from AutoWeld
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0251-1.jpg Starting to lay them out http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0260.jpg Here you can see how the stock hyrdoformed frame compound bends in, so I needed to mimic that http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0256.jpg Marked the angles http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0266.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0268.jpg |
Cut
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0271-1.jpg Clamped into place and double checked everything http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0272.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0275.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0278.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0284.jpg |
Welded the seams up
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0287-1.jpg Then I used the same method to tie in the rail rails since they were 10" closer together than the mid section http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0361.jpg Cut and Bevel http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0374.jpg Weld and then mark them for final fitment http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0378.jpg Clamping up and getting ready for final fitment http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0379.jpg |
Both sides complete and welded up as one piece
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0365.jpg Had to smooth the welds on the inside before I put them together otherwise I would never have got them smooth http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0367.jpg These welds were tight enough to do, never mind a grinder http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0368.jpg Starting on the next side, also explains how I strengthened those seams, and kept it hidden Since I did the other side completely and got it right I knew where everything had to be cut and drilled http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0367-1.jpg Drilled the plug weld holes http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0371.jpg |
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0375.jpg
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0376.jpg Made some plates, 3/16" http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0379-1.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0380-1.jpg Welded them in on one side http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0381-1.jpg |
Slide them together clamped everything up nice and tight
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0383-1.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...HPIM0389-1.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0397.jpg Once everything was good, I layed the rail flat, clamped and welded the seam http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0399.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0400.jpg |
Once the cooled I needed to grind this one smooth also
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0403.jpg Everything was set just need to get the final welds in this weekend, due to being in school till tomorrow then I got the summer off. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0409.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0407.jpg I also cut the rear frame rails down 4" I was going to run them higher but decided against it, so I plated them the same way. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0363.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0364.jpg Also once I get my 2" Spindles in I will be able to layout the front suspension and order my laser cut brackets for that. Also got to send out my 14b to have it narrowed in a week or so. Sucked that I had to cut off all those brackets I welded up already. Oh well, plans change. |
Well haven't updated due to me forgetting the camera, but I've been working on mainly figuring out my front suspension I wanted to make it perfect at ride height, and finally after moving everything upwards, motor 1.5" up i got my arms at 2* LCA and the uppers at 6* this is set at 5.5" ride height. Tire will sit right at the lip of the front tires.
So with that figured out, I started the front crossmember crazy cuts to make it fit http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0587.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0588.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0589.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0597.jpg Made sure the tierods would be clear, at full turn they hit so I will make a small round notch http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0600.jpg |
|
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0608.jpg
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0609.jpg Centered the rack up, took some measurements http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0610.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0611.jpg Check out those arm angles, perfect! http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0616.jpg |
|
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0633.jpg
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0636.jpg and some more pictures... Check out this, the body bout doesn't have much room to weld to so I could do a plate angle up on one side and the other going down, but I hate that look http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0537.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0538.jpg so why not make it look factory http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0540.jpg all done.... |
|
Welded up and smoothed out, the 2" hole will be drilled later
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0550.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0553.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0555.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0556.jpg |
had a few extra hands...
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...to/methree.jpg haha not, I wish though. So I continued with that crossmember, made stock styled rack mounts. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0641.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0651.jpg Going to cut down some of the excess on the opposite side http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0655.jpg Beveled edges and a nice solid bead http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0658.jpg |
Back on the frame
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0660.jpg Temporary bolts holding it in place http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0662.jpg Lower control arm mounts, I was going to have them laser cut, but seemed like a waste of money and time for what I will need http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0671.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0672.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0677.jpg |
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0676.jpg
started the second crossmember (under the oilpan) http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0692.jpg this is going to mount the back of the LCA and then the motor mounts ontop, the middle of the crossmember will be bolted in similar to factory setup. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0694.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0695.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0696.jpg |
Cut some brackets for the LCAs
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0699.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0700.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0701.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0702.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0703.jpg Got a lot done tonight even though it doesn't look it, I still work from 730-430 then do this till 930 |
Bout time I update, ordered some brackets through SD so I was waiting on those... got a call and they told me they shipped my custom cut duck heads, I was confused, but then soon realized that they do resemble a ducks head  Here they are
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0846.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0847.jpg Upper control arm frame mounts to be exact, with stock alignment adjustment. First took care of the rear crossmember, doubles as a bed mount, however I'm considering a tilt bed, not to be a show off, more so for ease of maintenance and such http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0835.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0840.jpg Then got the rear cab mount done... wish I would have planned the frame a little more I don't love the fact it's so long, but that's what happens when you do the first one, you learn as you go http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0843.jpg |
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0844.jpg
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0845.jpg Then I wanted to finish the front suspension so I waited to do the last cab mount till later Mocked them up http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0848.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0852.jpg Needed to add the alignment pin http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0855.jpg |
All pin installed welded and smoothed
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0856.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0857.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0858.jpg All welded up http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0864.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0865.jpg |
|
Finally the core support mounts, wanted to retain a factory design
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...o/HPIM0874.jpg That's it for now, I should have my t56 in monday then I can mock the motor up and the trans and finish the frame to start the fun part of this build, the complete one off front end. :woot: |
wow very impressive:yes:
|
nice work - i can't wait to see this truck finished.
so what are you going to do with the old frame. |
the old frame is up for sale, and cheap too, I don't have the room to store it, I already cut up my factory frame (4wd) so even though I have more than $1000 into it, I will sell for no less than $1000
Thanks guys, I can't wait to drive it either! |
Looks good!!!
Should be awesome when completed. You're working on it a lot I see. When do you think you'll have it done? Keep up the good work. |
no estimated date, not being in school and working my ass off as it is haha
