hood clearance w/ a victor jr?
Alright Gents, Building my BBC up now.... has anybody fit a victor jr on a BBC under an original GM style cowl hood? Talking to tech while ordering my cylinder heads suggested I ditch my current manifold and go w/ the V jr. I like my cowl hood, don't want a fiberglass 4 incher, though bad-a$$, I like the style of the original.
Thanks, Mike |

i will get you a pic, its a drop base, no carb spacer, way more of a drop base then you have on that motor.

I dont know what year car you have but on my 78 there is no way to keep a stock hood. I have a 4 inch hood but I also have a nitrous plate under the carb. I could see a 2 inch cowl but that would be with a low air cleaner.

I've just put a Team-G single plane on my 454 in a 68 camaro. With carby sitting on it I have just come over the line of the front fender. I dont have the hood on at the moment, so I will find out just how much clearance i have then i suppose... I'm planning to run a 14" drop base element, but may need to reconsider and go with a 9".
Pretty sure the Team-G is a fraction shorter than the victor jnr though. |
496 BBC dart intake with 14" drop base and stock cowl hood

Thanks for the reply guys. I know the vic jr has the a/b measurement of 5.90". Dart lists the height of their intake at 6.25" tall. What allows it to fit in one car and not the other? Jody, did your ride happen to have shorter/lowering body mount bushings that would allow the engine to sit higher relative to the body? I have a CA chassisworks subframe w/ poly mounts, I think it keeps the engine at stock height compared to the body.

I have a Vic Jr with a Fast 1200CFM TB on my standard deck 540. Professional Products makes a spun aluminum dropped base that allowed me a 4.5" filter. This is even with their 1" spacer to clear the throttle linkage and fuel rails.
There is enough room under the cowl hood for 1/2" of clearance over the K&N filter lid. It can be done. |
I have a 489 with Edelbrock air gap, 1/2 phelonic spacer, 3 inch K and N, nascar style drop base. I have about three **** hairs left. Of course drop body bushings don't help my cause. The nascar style air cleaner isn't the lowest profile top either. Has to look good.:D

I have been looking for this base for an hour. Do you have a part# by any chance? |
I might be all wrong here but couldn't the difference be if someone is using the small block frame motor mounts.
I thought if you have the 307 engine mounts the engine would be sitting higher in the chassi then with the big block mounts. Tonny |
It's about 3/8 of an inch.

The 307 mounts do mount the engine higher. The 69 302 and 350 mounts are the same height as the BBC, but mount the engine back a bit.
