68 Camaro Air ride??
I bought a 68 Camaro a few weeks ago. The car was blasted and painted. Being a paint guy the car is FAR from what I want. I want to build a pro touring car. I have many plans to mod this car from the ground up. Ive always wanted to build a Camaro but never had a chance. Ive modded many Cars, bikes they just turned into projects. I guess those projects were good for me because Ive learned a lot about modding. Now I just have to learn about 1st gen Camaro stuff. I have ideas running wild, lol. One of the main things is I want is a air ride system. Question is should I start with the stock sub frame and just mod the control arms ect. Or buy a subframe ready to roll, thoughts????
Heres my project http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...er2nv/maro.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...r2nv/maro1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...v/DSC_0257.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...v/DSC_0254.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...v/DSC_0252.jpg |

Its all a matter of your needs, desires, and budget. What is important, and what is secondary. You have obviously done some killer projects, and like your previous projects, planning is everything! Putting together a budget, selecting the components, and staying with the plan is the only way to go.
Too many projects get started and don't get finished because they blow the budget, or plans change mid stream causing a blown budget. These sites are litered with these projects. Make a plan, fill in all the blanks, and then build. |
Thanks Frank. I just placed my first order with you. Im sure there will be many more, lol.
BUDGET oh do I know about a budget. That car posted above got way out of hand!! I hope to have a budget of 30k plus the car. Keep in mind Ill be doing ALL the work myself, paint motor ect. Back to Suspension. I would like the bling of a new subframe. BUT the car wont see a track. The goal is to have something modern and that performs good as a street car. When parked I want to lay it out. I want BIG brakes Any suggestions? |
I just bought a 6 piston willwood kit from Rodger at Ironworks. I think it was around 20% ofF list.
Not cheap but killer brakes! |
Air Ride is the way to go for you. No need for a aftermarket subframe. Some of the baddest Pro Tuouring cars around run Air Ride.
For brakes, bling for the buck, our Prodigy Customs Total Car G Machine Brake Packages are hard to beat. You get everything you need all the way down to the fluid and special tools you need. Your doing this yourself right? As with almost everything else you will need for the car, we have both these products. |

I'm running the G-bar (the original one) and it's pretty good. Most here will agree when I say the DSE kit it much better, here is a link. http://www.detroitspeed.com/productp...uadra_prod.htm
Frank sells an upgraded kit for the G-bar and a lot of guys are running that too. Either way you should be fine. Rich |
I forgot to mention that I'm running my stock subframe as well.
I didn't go with Air Ride but I did replace everything else with aftermarket. So Frank is right, you don't need an aftermarket SF however, the ATS subframe kits are smoking bad ass!~ |

I just got a call on my stock subframe. I listed it for 1000.00 complete. Maybe I will just sell it.
Being that I run a wheel/ after market shop I should be able to get hooked up on some stuff. Man I need to finish my bathroom remodel so I can down on this car. Right now every time I touch the car the wife gives me a sideways look:lol: Man the deals me make:willy: |
You run an aftermarket wheel shop?
Cool. DSE subframes are nice and expensive but very nice, art morrison is swqeet too. The ATS kit was used on the One Lap Camaro build, very sweet indeed. You should be able to find a SF from the sponsors on the left too. Rich |
Check out www.ilovewheels.com By posting the link I dont want to get in any trouble so if its not allowed mods please remove it.
If I can get 1k for the stock subframe I think I just might take it. |
Wow this is nice!

If you sell your subframe and do a aftermarket subframe, I would run a Speedtech subframe with the Air Ride option. We can do it for under $6k to the door, and you get everything you want and more. As for the DSE frame, it WILL NOT run Air Ride, so it is out. morrison is very nice , we sell it to, you will spend another grand on it.

There is a few other out there in this catagory. We have better stuff for less money. I run this one in Project EmptyNest and am super happy with it, with Air Ride. http://www.speedtech-performance.com...cat/cat214.htm http://www.speedtech-performance.com...cat_lg_214.JPG |
Very nice stuff! Frank right now Im just gathering pricing. I have a lot of work to do before I order many parts. Im starting with the body, tubs, firewall and going from there.
Prices for this stuff seems to vary a lot. I like that Prodigy bar with the 12bolt. What does it run with the 12bolt and shockwaves? I do apprichate you posting this stuff and will keep it in mind when I do order. Maybe once Im ready you can give me a package price. |
Depending on the horsepower (rearend requirments), single or double adjustable shockwaves, your right at $4500 to $5000 for everything.
|
I think Im going to have to add to the budget, lol. Those Brakes are lookin SWEET!
|
if you wanna stay under 30k your gonna really be pushing it with getting an after market subframe...and if you want a car that handles nice and can slam down for shows... and you dont plan on tracking the car i feel that aftermarket subframe become a bling item... theres no need for them if you dont plan to push the car to the limit... did you have a motor for it yet?
i would keep the stock subframe and just get the airride shockwave kit with thier uppers and lowers and get the prodigy bar from frank with the shock waves upgrade.my guesstimate is oif you go with speedtech (i believe the least expensive of the aftermarkets) with shockwaves like frank said 6k the rear suspension and axle i would think 3500 to 4k. brakes 4k, wheels and tires im thinking even though you dealer youll probably pay around 3k. plus 2k for the airride kit. and if you dont have a motor youve got easy 5-10k unless you go lsx then maybe even more. and when restoring a old car all the little thing can really add up quick... im not say 30k is not doable at all but if you go all out theres no way youll do it even when your doing all the work in house. |
Its going to be close. Im droppin a LS2 in it. With trans wiring ect Im looking at 10k. If I go a few grand Im sure the end result will be worth it.
|
You mentioned selling your subframe, but as Santijay mentioned, absolutly NOT necassary. you could save a ton modding the front frame and have all the cool factor.
Again, just get with me when your ready and we can go to step 2. Whatever you want, mild to wild, we have it. |
Don't forget to consider the cost of your LSx conversion when deciding which way to go with the front subframe. The AME will save you some money on the conversion because you can run the stock accessories and F body oil pan. You can also run low cost C5 brakes and abuttments. Do the math on the total cost of your project including the LSx conversion. When I did it the AME subframe cost was more a less a wash with an upgraded stock subframe but gives superior performance.

Just looking at one of your previous builds I can tell your not a person that does things half way. That's great if your building a baddass G-Machine and a very bad thing on the pocket book.
My build started out just changing the brakes. Two years and $60k later I decided to have a shop finish it for me. I figure another $40k and I'll be driving it. It's your car, you build it the way you want. Half or more of these cars have aftermarket subframes. It's not a huge costs but it does cut into a small budget. Rich |
Thanks for the info guys. After I do all the work I dont want to look back and say I should have done this or that.
I have a guy comin over in a hour to pick up the subframe. That 1k toward the new unit. That makes the new unit about 5k. That kind of justifies it a little:willy: . I could be wrong but I think I could get into the stocker 3k to get what I want out of it. Thats 2k off from the aftermarket unit. |
before you make your decision, see if there is anyone around you that has a pro touring stock clip and a aftermarket clip you could ride in or drive. if your in new england you could stop bye, so you made the right decision for yourself

Only if I would have built a Camaro then. Trust me the monies you spent now on your car will be worth it in the end. It will be a neck breaker, looks and speed. If you ever do sell it you will get most of the cash back. Ive been using your build sheet, lol. Well, with a edit here and there hahahaha. Your car is going to be bad arse!!! |

I updated my build sheet a few eeks ago because it included a bunch of stuff that I didn't have any longer.
Your welcome to come over and check out my car anytime you like. Here is the current parts list: LS2 Crate engine Custom Comp Cam AFR Mongoose heads Synister Serpentine belt system Autokraft Oil pan Fast Intake & Nickey Throttle body ATS Headers ARP head stud kit Fast Fuel rails Jesel shaft Rockers Moser Rear, with Tru-Trac and 33 spline axles Chris Alston G bar/4 link Carbon Fiber Valve Covers T56 Transmission Jesel Lifters Jesel Push Rods McLeod Bell Housing ATS Motor Mount adapters Mcleod Clutch and Pressure plate Matson Radiator Ricks Stainless Fuel Tank DSE Upper and lower control arms ARP Intake Bolts DSE Selecta speed wiper FAST Fuel Injectors ATS T56 Swap kit Quick ratio steering box Idler Arm, pitman arm Hotchkis Tie rod sleeves HRE Wheels ATS Spindels Earls AN fittings and custom lines Aeromotive pressure regulator and filetr stuff Hydroboost with Willwood MC QA1 Shocks (front) Willwood 6 piston brakes on all 4 wheels F1 Procharger Intercooler Cog Pulley Tires Everything came to around $70k (not including the car :( ) |
Thats a heck of a build sheet! HRE's WELL that half your budget right there, lol. Thats going to be a hell of a car. Cant wait to see it done!
|
In a couple of those pictures your at the elk grove dealership... I built that years ago.
Kinda funny to see stuff you built over the years. |
Yeah that was a car show. I cant seem to find a lot of the pics. Im pretty bad about keeping them on a back up disc.
I always go crazy on the stuff. I do a lot of fiberglass work. Everything from gauge pods to audio, dashes ect. Building has always just been a hobby of mine for years. I figure Ill add some of that kind of stuff to the Camaro. What pics did you find of the stuff Ive built? |
Thats that, subframe just sold.
|
Cool
|
Frank do you know the backspace for front and rear with the subframe you suggested? Also with the rear you suggested. Thanks!
|
Are you planning to mini tub the car?
|
Yes sir. They should be here this week. Cant wait! Ill have to snap some pics. Car is stripped down pretty good at this point.
|
|
I would have to see them on the car to tell you.
They kinda remind me of Budnik Ice wheels. Are you planning to have them orange in the center? does that match your paint scheme? It took me 3 weeks to decide on my wheels. I was sure of the wheels I wanted then I changed my mind. You should post your build in the new member projects and ask. Originally, I was going to use the Asanti 6**, Fesler has them on one of his builds and they look killer. The Rushforth wheels are damn nice too. Wheels are such a damn focal point it drives me crazy. Really hard to choose. Rich |
