I feel so violated!

Came home last night, after dinner and grocery shopping. The back door was wide open and every cupboard was open everything in the office was taken, my CAD workstation, all my check books credit cards passports social security cards. Jewelry hidden cash. the upstairs of my house looked like something you see out of a movie.

I pray to someday see these thieves face to face. I hope they catch them.
Been looking all day at pawn shops for my computer and stuff. nothing yet.
Yesterday and today has not been a good day.

comp-spec 11-13-2008 05:23 PM

Sorry to hear man, I hope you get to find them before the cops do. After that you can call them. I hope you get your stuff back

Sorry for getting jacked up like that.. I've been robbed and it's a shame that some people are so worthless and lazy.

X2! No room for any POS like this. Sorry to hear of your this. They will hopefully get theirs in the end - and not by the law. That as always - would be to easy on them.

I am so sorry to here. With so many people out of work the crime rate is climbing. This is the first year that I'm not traveling with my family over the holiday's. I'm just to afraid to leave the house empty.

I was just talking to a co-worker about this yesterday. I think we are going to see some real desparate times as the holiday nears. Not to mention suicide rate. Seems to always go up around holiday season with depression and all - going to be worse with the economy the way it is unfortunately. Hopefully it will not be the case.

Didn't mean to hi jack your thread......

Safe's are not a good investment unless your trying to keep your wife and kids away from your guns or money.

My fathers neighbor was robbed about 2 years ago and they used a metal detector to locate all of the hidden safes in the house. They also found the bigger safe in his home and flipped it on it's back and opened it. Obviously they new what they were doing because then were able to get into all 3 of his safes.

So what is the solution - it's pretty easy. Put a couple fake air return vents in your walls and hang them on drywall screws. Make sure you glue the original screws on the front of the vents so it looks like a real vent.

Blown353 11-14-2008 08:19 AM

Ugh, that sucks. And I agree 100%-- given the current economic times and unemployment rates this sort of thing will only happen more often.

There is a big difference between what most people call a "safe" which is actually just an RSC (residential security container, a glorified sheetmetal box) and a TL-rated burglary resistant & rated safe.

99% of the people out there buy a "safe" (usually rated RSC or not rated at all) and expect it to be their end all, be all security solution-- that simply isn't the case. If they're spending under $4000 or so it's probably not going to be a "safe" and rather a RSC-rated storage container and they also probably have false exaggerated hopes of their newly acquired security.

Flipping an RSC onto the back makes it much easier to pry the doorframe open or beat on the corners with a sledgehammer to pop the welds-- I take it from your description that it wasn't properly anchored to the floor.

Safes buy you time-- that's all. The more you spend, the more time you get before it can be opened. Given enough time and tools you can get into anything. Buying a more expensive TL-rated safe just means more layers of security, thicker metal, a locking mechanism that can't be easily pushed open, etc, and it's harder to get into and will take more time. The more expensive TL-rated safes are quite effective at resisting "smash and grab" type of burglaries but against a experienced pro who has lots of time (or a guy who doesn't care about the contents and uses a torch or lance, in which case your contents will likely be ruined by the time he gets in) your stuff will still be gone.

syborg tt 11-14-2008 08:34 AM

I agree with you a safe just buy's you time. These guy's were professionals and came prepared to Cut open the safe. From memory this was a 500lb safe that I am certain the owner spent a boat load of money on. His biggest mistake was the fact that he put it in plane view of the front of his house.

Ouch, he made one of the biggest mistakes you can make... if they can see it before they're even in the house, they can come back when prepared rather than finding it during the burglary and being caught unprepared!

And 500# is very light for a true TL rated burglar resistant safe unless it was small, like 2' x 2' x 2' or so.

Very Sorry to hear.....I hope they are caught...

Rick Dorion 11-14-2008 10:42 AM

I feel your pain - so sorry for the experience. I've been robbed twice. Once was my new garage - left the project car but emptied the place. Trooper said if I didn't have windows (they broke one out) that they use a battery circular saw to come through the wall studs. Slime!!

XLexusTech 11-14-2008 11:07 AM

So sorry this happened to you I hope they catch a punish those involved.

Jr 11-14-2008 11:12 AM

This blows! I hope you get your stuff back.

Swain 11-14-2008 11:20 AM

That sucks I would go nuts

96z28ss 11-14-2008 11:42 AM

I spent yesterday all day at banks, changing to new accounts, closing old ones. Had a locksmith come out and change all the locks on the house.
Had to have all the locks on my Avalanche changed.

I'm going to get an alarm system and also a good safe, to keep all my important papers. file cabinets with locks aint stopping anyone or slowing them down. I do believe a good safe in a good location can be safe or slow them down alot.

They took my CAD workstation they didn't unplug a single cable. They cut every cable attached to it. Printer cable, monitor cable, keyboard, mouse, intenet. They didn't want to spend any time fishing wires thru and around the desk.
The worse part is i never did a backup on that computer. I lost all my work and also lost the last 4 years of digital pictures.

Jr 11-14-2008 12:25 PM

Did the b*tch pick the door lock? This must suck...the more I think about it...I become more furious

68TINCAN 11-14-2008 12:28 PM

Sorry to hear of your loss....It makes you hate the world!!
I own serveral rental properties and have had a few broken into. Lost tools and supplies. I turned to Tattle Tale alarms. Works of cell phone signal. Has worked great for me. Sometimes when I have more than one property vacant, I just hang the signs in the window and thats it. I just can say enough about this alarm. It is truely a great system.

They tried coming thru the french doors in the back. They failed but the doors have to be repaired and repainted.

So then they took a chair from my lawn furniture around the side of the house and broke the window in the laundry room, came through there and then took stuff out the back door.

Tom.A 11-14-2008 01:35 PM

That sucks. I hate scum bags. Hope you get some stuff back

The alarm system is a good call. It still won't stop them but it will limit the time they have for sure. I have a system and it is $25.00 a month. I would upgrade from the basics. I have 44 windows in my house so I could not hard wire all of them. Some areas are motion and I also glass breakage sensors. Just be sure to ask them how long the battery back up is. Nothing worse than going to the trouble and expense only to have a weak battery back up and the bastards cut the power and come back an hour later.

And get one that is cell phone or wireless based communications... the systems that communicate via the phone line ones don't do much good when you can easily clip the phone lines at the outside junction box.

96z28ss 11-19-2008 02:47 PM

okay can someone explain this?

I got an ip address from where they were making purchases with our card online.

72.56.145.85 how does the guy use an IP address from over 3000 miles away and in a different country.

VP23271 11-19-2008 04:26 PM

They might have sold your credit card #?

You might want to sign up for one of those credit identity theft companies. Costco offered a discount for a company called Identity Guard. After I signed up, I had access to my credit score from all 3 Credit Bureaus and also got an email every time a new account was opened under my SS#. I don't think anything is fool proof, but it helps me monitor my credit score

https://www.intersections.identitygu...eid=1&f=costco

Sorry you having to deal with this crap. It sucks!

rich-allen 11-19-2008 05:06 PM

They just spoofed the IP address or even easier, the logged onto the web using one of those free internet accounts which spoofs it for you.

I forget the name of the company but I used to see advertisments for them all the time. Now they charge like $2.99 a month for a host.

I feel for you brother, you have a long road ahead of you.

Rich

Hdesign 11-19-2008 05:14 PM

Bob, check these guys out. They advertise all the time on the radio.

That's actually typical for CCs. I've had this happen before and yes it sucks. They will try to get as much cash/product before the card is shut down. I'm sure you've alerted your CC company and you shouldn't be held for any of it.

Now that they have all your personal info it's C.Y.A. time! I'll talk to the wife who works for the Police here in Vegas and see if she has any suggestions for you.

Best of luck my friend.

Spiffav8 11-19-2008 06:08 PM

Wife said to contact everyone. lol

SS admin...get a new number and they will flag your account.
State Department regarding the Passport.
CC companies for new accounts and ask for fraud alerts on any purchase over a certain amount. Like $200.00 that you need to approve.
Contact all the Credit Reporting agency's informing them of what's happened.
Best to do it all via phone and then follow up in writing.

Major pain in the azz I know, but it's better than what could become a bigger problem.

DOOM 11-19-2008 06:30 PM

Bob is this happening elseware around you? Reason I ask is I had two friends that this happened to both live in quit crime free neighborhoods,no home invaitions . So after some time it in both cases the rat b@#$*#ds were caught ! Turns out that in both cases these people were friends of friends!!!(BOTH SEPERATE CASES) But the officers in both cases told them to start looking at people they know. They laughed it off . When they found out they were floored!! Sounds crazy. But as this happened I told my wife it just did'nt add up ,this does'nt happen in the areas they live in. Just a thought ........
Mario

awr68 11-19-2008 06:46 PM

WOW that's crazy Mario!

I told this story to Bob already, but yeasterday I was the first to arrive at work and the glass of the front door was broken and it appeared there was unlawfull entry. Nothing was taken...but the crazy thing is that earlier that day an electrician got all the outdoor/parking lot lights fixed...thay had been not working for some time. Today when I saw the electrician (a friend of mine) I told him he lit the parking lot up too well and it was real easy for jack asses to see what they were doing! Go figure they wait untill the parking lot is lit to break in! :faint:

Nine Ball 11-19-2008 06:53 PM

That is awful. I know exactly how you feel. In the last 2 years:

-two attempted thefts on my trucks. Ravelco.com plug stopped them.
-burglarized my storage unit, stole three sets of wheels/tires ($8,500)
-stolen radar detector by a valet driver at a hotel
-broken into truck, stole radar, CD case, handgun

If I ever catch someone stealing my crap, they will pay for all of the above.
