My most recent paint project; 300ZX

Hey guys,
Just thought I would post up a progress thread on my newest paint venture, a buddies 93 Nissan 300ZX. So far it has been stripped and the body has been shot (as of today) in Rosso Corsa aka Ferrari Red. Ill keep the pics coming as the progress continues. Let me know what you think.

Looks like it came out nice! What paint did you use and were you hapy with it?

70TWO NOVA 11-14-2008 10:28 PM

Thanks,
Im pretty happy with how it came out. After a good cut and buff im sure ill like it more. I used Sherwin Williams Dimension base and their Refinishers Select Ultimate Overall Clear.

Was this your first time painting a car? Was it done in a booth? I want to paint mine myself but Ive never painted a car before and wasnt sure how it would turn out with no paint booth in my garage. Car looks awesome.

John

skatinjay27 12-04-2008 08:27 PM

KILLER job man!!!!! look very good.

70TWO NOVA 12-04-2008 10:49 PM

thanks guys,
John, this is not my first paint job, this is the 6th vehicle i have painted. Iam definately still a beginner though and have only been at it for about 3 years now. I did not paint this car in a booth, actually I sprayed it in a garage (see the first pics). It was probably the worst environment i have sprayed in. All i did was sweep it out and put a fan in the garage opening. I dont recommend this, but it is possible to get a good result without a booth.

Wow Brian thats really impressive! Nice mirror like finish. Now you have me thinking about hiring you to paint my car....

70TWO NOVA 12-31-2008 11:37 PM

thanks Mitch, yeah that would be cool, i could paint it if you want.

WSSix 01-01-2009 06:58 PM

looks great Brian especially if it is only your 6th job. By the time you get to ten, you'll have people standing in line for your work.

Looking good! Do you use different paint or add flex agents for the bumpers? I ask because the last bumper I painted cracked; the body shop told me the base and clear I got already had flex agents.
Thanks

70TWO NOVA 01-06-2009 11:56 PM

i dont add any flex agents to the paint for the plastic parts. most modern paints are engineered to allow some flexability. if the part you are painting does a lot of flexing your may need to add some agents.

Nvrenuf 01-07-2009 07:01 AM

Nice job Brian. Looks like you're keeping busy. Good thing you don't live up here. You wouldn't be painting right now. 10 degrees and tons of snow. I can't wait to get down to phx in 2 weeks and feel some warmth.

70TWO NOVA 01-07-2009 11:23 AM

Thanks Jason, im just about done with this one, then in early Feb im starting on a 70 Chevelle and after that a friends 68 LS1 Firebird. Iam definately glad the weathers nice here or like you said i wouldnt be doing anything! So are you coming down for Barrett Jackson?

Oh no, you didn't? I'm not even ganna touch that one. Yeah, I'm coming down to check out BARRETT JACKSON. Never been. And I'm picking up my car from Fesler. I had left it there so he could work on '64 Chevelle hood hinges. They look sick. You're painting looks great in pics. I bet you are still learning every time you do it. That is a great talent/skill to have. That's one I have never attempted/tried. The whole wet sanding thing.....

Yea, that's what the guy at the body supply place told me. It's a plastic bumper on an '01 Deville. I guess I will try some flex agents when I re-paint.
Thanks
