Pro Touring.com is temporarily down

Larry had someone hack into the site. He has backup files, but since he's at work now and it's a fairly long process to re-build the entire database, the site may be down for a day or two, hopefully less.

Since there are many Pro Touring members here, who've probably noticed the site is down, just wanted you to know what's happening and that they have not permanently disappeared.

Could someone please explain to me the purpose of hacking a site??????? Are they looking for personal information ? Do they somehow financially gain from it? Call me dumb what's in it for the hacker?

in this case they deleted all the files. Guess it's fun for them to be able to break into a site and crash it.

Satisfaction in knowing that they are getting revenge for all the times their lunch money was taken and they were given a swirly in the girls bathroom in HS. Unfortunately, living in the basement of their parents house at age 45 won't really give them the audience and recognition they were hoping for.

I wish the authorities could crack down on this stuff and lock these losers up for a while.

Usually it amounts to nothing more than simple vandalism.

David Pozzi 11-18-2008 02:22 PM

Terrible!
Lots of extra work for Larry. Hope not many posts get lost when he re-creates the forums from backup files. It's happened before and we lost a few days posts.

Mr.VENGEANCE 11-18-2008 02:30 PM

damn thats messed up.. i just thought it was like the other times when the site went down for a few hours or so.. but time diffrence here in japan i didnt notice.

The WidowMaker 11-18-2008 02:54 PM

what douchbags..... and i thought my life was wasting away on these sites. who the hell has the time to ruin someones day for no financial gain? at least my time is somewhat productive.

XcYZ 11-18-2008 02:58 PM

Yeah, it really sucks. The backups aren't the issue, it's re-installing the software and then re-installing all the add-ons to it, testing, etc.

At least we can help get the word out that the downtime is temporary.

Flash68 11-18-2008 03:07 PM

what a bummer.... is there any way to make it "stronger" so it cannot be hacked into again? or at least a lot more difficult to hack?

Steve1968LS2 11-18-2008 04:34 PM

Thanks.. I thought I was banned or something...

TonyL 11-18-2008 04:50 PM

Larry says it'll be a few days. :(

We haven't had a beef with anyone for a LONG time. So I'm really scratchin my head as to who'd do such a thing. Must be just some random vandal, or someone insanely jealous or something.

qnitro 11-18-2008 04:52 PM

I was curious to what happened...

OLDFLM 11-18-2008 05:03 PM

Sorry Larry!

That really sucks! Sorry Larry! I know you're busy playing catchup after just getting home from SEMA and your time with Frank before that... bastards!

zbugger 11-18-2008 05:25 PM

Yeah, it really sucks. One of my addictions is gone and i may be staying in the corner in the fetal position shivering because the site's down. Or not. At least there's a backup for all the info on there. I think it's about a week old, so close to a week may have been lost. I'm not positive on that, but expect close to that.

mpozziCPL 11-18-2008 06:38 PM

Or they steal the server to send out mass spam and other annoying stuff.

Mary Pozzi

buickfunnycar.com 11-18-2008 06:47 PM

the bastards...

BonzoHansen 11-18-2008 07:09 PM

That sucks.

At least he gave drive that shiny new car after he gets it back together.

CRCRFT78 11-18-2008 07:17 PM

Well I hope the hackers don't attack any other sites. Can the hackers attack the computers of members that frequent the forums? I think they should have their fingers cut off and their eyelids stitched wide open and be forced to sit and "enjoy" the forums they delete. Soak it all up without being able to delete any of it, A**holes

It is kind of the digital equivalent of graffiti There are entire forums where hackers go to brag out their "exploits".

brownz 11-18-2008 07:50 PM

I though the world was coming to a end LOL.

BallnRods 11-18-2008 08:02 PM

I thought my work blocked the site.....

....I hate hackers, F-ing cowards hiding behind a computer.

Steve68 11-18-2008 08:35 PM

Anybody got a address for the hacker, we could really get a Kick ass vigialanty posse to take care of the 45 yr old basement baby or the 15 yr old geek that needs a good tooth transplant, ie:Val Kilmer science movie, Can't remember movie titles to save my ass,

rockdogz 11-18-2008 11:31 PM

Lotsa times it's either high school kids in Eastern Europe or Asia, or worms. In other words many times sites are hacked by a self-proliferating program. Doesn't sound like what happened here, but it's interesting that some loser can write some code and then let it go into the world and it starts causing havok on its own without the hacker personally visiting each site....

Interesting, I lost my DSL modem yesterday, found out when I woke up. It was completely dead, the power supply was ok though. I may have been logged into Pro-touring.com when it happened. Is it possible that it could have been affected by the hack?

I would seriously doubt it, Unless they hosted some malacious code on the site that you allowed to run on your PC. If you had walked away it's very unlikely. One preventative step I would perform is to change any login that shares the username/password with PT.com. Although they can't get to your PC from there, they do have access to every bit of information hosted on the site.

It's common for people/groups to hack forums to get personal info. That info is then sold to spammers for a profit.

jy211 11-19-2008 05:44 AM

someone was probably just jealous of Motiv8tor! LOL

Payton King 11-19-2008 06:15 AM

The name of the movie

was "genius" or "pure genius" That is going back to the 80's. Was not Laslow the genius that lived in the basement that won all the Clearing House prizes.

Hacking a car site is prettly lame.

If they can hack a website in a firewalled co-lo they can easily thwart whatever you have on your home computer. I wouldn't screw with them.

But If you take them into the woods and break there hands and arms they might not want to do any hacking again, or they could get hired by the goverment, :wow:
