ive had this 68 short bed chevy for a couple of years and been waiting for the time to do something crazy with. i didnt want to build something to crazy expensive in these uncertian economic times, so i decided to build a drifter/show truck on a lean budget (under 25k ). i scored a LS6 6spd, out of an 04 CTX-V ,pretty cheap on ebay. ive been working with jason rushfourth to come up with some crazy metal work. i dont know whether to call it the LIL RED DRIFTER or C10-V . im truly building this truck to lay rubber and have fun with . bill

XcYZ 11-18-2008 09:07 PM

C10-V, I like that.

awr68 11-18-2008 09:19 PM

Cool build Bill! C10-V

Technosurfer 11-19-2008 09:33 AM

Looks cool, I like it.

lhkustoms 11-19-2008 11:17 AM

C-10V  glad to see your working with Jason he'll come up with some awesome ideas... good luck

Datsbad 11-19-2008 10:04 PM

Bill , neat truck . I like the C10-V name fits pretty well.
Let me know if you need anything getting that LS engine running. Since your on a budget look me up for some good used parts time to time. Might even have some extra HP stuff for ya at some point if you need it.

frame pics

heres a few pics of my very slow frame progress. ive installed a rear four bar from fat mans, and have the frame partially boxed. working with 1/8 plate steel is a lot tougher to work with than the 18-20 guage that im used to . i pre fit the engine & trans and re pulled it ,to do the boxing. im doing all this work at home so ignore the mess. im only geting about 2hr a day to play with this project , so i hate to spend 1 hr of that cleaning up . bill

Who's coilover front clip is that in the picture?

Any reason you spent the money to upgrade to the 4-link vs. using the OE truck arms? Seems the OE stuff would have worked fine for your application & mild ride height change w/o adding the the build costs (since you did mention something about a budget).

Kenny_Cox 11-30-2008 03:49 PM

pretty wicked looking setup man, I am going to keep an eye on this.

ScotI 12-05-2008 01:27 PM

Bumped . . . ......

Jim Nilsen 12-06-2008 10:38 AM

the truck is really a gmc and came w leaf springs .i have tried to save money in the past by using leaf springs, but at the end of the day(in my opinion) the adjustability of the rear four link is worth the cost. bill

Awesome project! I just love these old trucks! Especally with those mods you are about to do! Keep us posted!

just wanted to say that jason talked me into the name of RS/C10 (which i like) so thats why the name is diff. ill post one of jasons drawlings that indicates where the body mods will be.the different color ink shows the changes. im waiting for my cab to come back from the sand blaster so i can start cutting up this nearly rust free cab. bill

I've done some investigating on these trucks & based on your front suspension location vs. the frame rails & the c-notch w/stock rear frame rails, I would estimate 6" @ ride height @ the C/L of the cab mounts.

My buddies truck uses the same front set-up but had to be notched 2" to achieve a ~5" ride height w/Shockwaves. His rear is step notched w/air bags so there's about 3-4" more inches of room vs. your arrangement between the frame & rear housing tubes & his yields 5" when air'd completely out.

i know , im doing a 4 in body drop but loosing 1 inch of it in my bed mounts, that puts my rockers down but the inside of my bed wont be all chopped up inside. plus the ls engines always look very low in these trucks im hoping that the body drop will help that. i will say im worried where my shifter will end up.(heightwise). you are correct on your observations ,im impressed. bill

Ahhh, didn't know (read) about dropping the body. Watch out for speed bumps @ speed. The rockers won't like that . . ....

I'm keeping up w/this one.

 Point taken. Well.... TX is a big 'ol state so I would gamble you don't have the monopoly on crappy roads ;) . Some of our freakin speed-bumps do seem to follow that state slogan (everything's bigger in TX).

That being said, I know in stock configuration the lower portion of the frame rail is approx .500-.750" below the pinch weld of the rocker. Providing that all drivetrain related parts are above the bottom of the frame, dropping the cab beyond the frame rail now means that rocker is going to be the first thing to contact earth (man made or otherwise.....).

ive been fooling around with my bed and front clip while waiting for my cab at the sandblaster. im realizing that my goal of 4in on the rockers maybe a little of a pipe dream with out bags. i have the front sitting at my initial height of 4in and i see what you mean ,4 in over a span of 12ft is asking for trouble, and im also seeing problems with the amount the hood clearance or lack there of. you know how it is theres how low you want it ,and how low you can drive it. im sure ill soon find that height, thats where the money for the coil overs starts to pay off. bill

Yikes, that LS motor sits higher than what I would have expected.

I'm planning the suspension on my 67 as well so I know all about trying to succeed in that 4" measurement @ ride height (as measured @ the C/L of the F/R cab mounts). I've got some advantage over you in that my frame will be chopped up slightly. Mine is also currently going the direction of air ride so 1" will be the clearance @ the cab mounts when the smoke clears (or the air is purged).

My set-up is C4 front suspension. For the rear, I'm sticking w/the truck arm set-up (no sense changing what's cheap & functional). I'm trying to incorporate a Watts link vs a Panhard bar but the simple packaging of the PHB might be the deciding factor.

I look forward to your updates.

Killer truck i love the way you lay it out.

finally getting some time to do some of the fun stuff, the windsheild is laid back 3in,the over all height came down 2in and the door opening is 1 3/4 in longer. the body is dropped 1 3/4 inch. its starting to look pretty cool. bill

blakeaz33 01-01-2009 08:17 PM

Great work - looking good. I'm looking forward to seeing this one come together.

srh3trinity 01-01-2009 08:22 PM

This is gonna be a great build. I like the fact that it is a GMC too. I have always liked the grill/headlights on the GMC's

awr68 01-01-2009 08:24 PM

Man that's quite the project! What does this do to the windshield? Do you have to have a custom one made? Keep up the good work!!

Datsbad 01-01-2009 08:41 PM

Looking good Bill.
I like this build. I might have to find a truck now !

Great looking truck. Nice work. Like the laid back windsheild amongst everything else thus far. Keep up the good work.

ScotI 01-02-2009 10:26 AM

Are you going to stretch the cab/doors to close the gap created or ? ? ????

thanks jason rushforth

just wanted to than jason rushforth for this design. he was right on the money. he had the idea for laying the windsheild back and told me the stock windsheild would work ,and he was right. when i set the glass in ,and it fit, i thought "he actually saved me time and money".the last time i cut up a cab it cost a small fortune in the cost of the windsheild. thanks jason
bill
ps yes ,im stretching the doors to fit the opening.

Vegas69 01-02-2009 10:07 PM

Killer build....I've wanted to build one since watching dazed and confused in High School. Maybe next.

4in shouldnt be too bad. My daily driver sits 4.5 inches off the ground, is completely stock and I have never bottomed out. Then again I did set my Dart up at 5in.

few more metal pics.i got the drip rail removed and welded,it really cleaned up the roof but took the best part of the weekend. i also cut a small recess in the back of the roof . im not sure i like the recess ,if it dosent grow on me ill change it up. bill
