The GT2:1969 turbo fastback
Hi,
Been lurking for most of 2 years but now I'm finally building a car that's worth a post or 2. So here the run down so far! These are the renderings of how the build will look incl. some "artistic freedom" (drip rails and door handles are staying so far): http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...ngfrproof4.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...rfinal1280.jpg The GT2 naming is because this is my second attempt at a GT type car (Gran Tourismo) or Pro Tourer. The feature list looks like this: Ford SB 363 stroker, World Products block, all forged & hyd. roller, 0 balance, Diamond pistons Single turbo: BW AirWerks 80mm S400 (S480?), intercooler Big Stuff 3 ECU HKS EVC VI boost controller BBK SSI-R intake T-56 trans from Pro Motion, McLeod RST clutch, hydraulic throwout AJE front coil over struts w/adjustable A-arms, improved roadrace K-member, double adj. Koni's, manual rack & pinion 13" 4-piston Brembo front, 11,65" Cobra R rear FAB9 9" rear & TrueTrac, TCP leaf spring kit, adj. Varishocks TCP torque arm & Panhard bar 18" Shelby CS56 wheels, 9.5" and 11" width Toyo R888 rubber, 275/35 and 315/30 Speedhut Revolution gauges 69 Deluxe interior, black ProCar leather seats Rollcage & Simpson harness Custom carbon bodywork & aero parts The car is being built by CPR Streetmachines, the engine by Total Performance (Obsidian etc.). Both in San Diego. I do as much of it as I can on weekends in CA. |
I was lucky to get a stranded project from a guy in Portland, looked like this when it rolled in:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...ans69fbdy3.jpg The previous owner did a very good rust revival, new rear qtrs, inner wheelwell, floors, rear valance, tailpanel and what not. Completely clean now though. |
Engine being done by Total Performance:

Shock towers shaved to make more room for turbo piping:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...h_DSC_0019.jpg Front suspension from AJE Racing + the 13" Brembo stuff: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...030_021935.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...208_214157.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...208_214233.jpg |

Some of the 100 timestealers. Deleting trunk lock and antenna hole:

what a great looking car.................

Rear wheels back from widening (Vaughns Machine in LA). Went from 9.5" to 11" for the rears. Notice how little weight was needed to balance out those 315s.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...h_DSC_0035.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...h_DSC_0040.jpg With all 4 wheels present and accounted for we could finally set the ride height: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...213_143103.jpg Front fender got the lip rolled around a 5/16 rod to get a nice curved edge: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...213_143051.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...213_143055.jpg |
Its all in the details, repositioning the rear wing:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...h_DSC_0014.jpg Making the custom fender emblems out of 2 302's and a 460: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...74720small.jpg |
I went for Speedhut Revolution gauges. The 4" and 2-5/8 fit the original gauge cluster perfectly but of course there was a lot of work in modyfying and fitting:
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...207_171736.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...207_171802.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...208_222141.jpg So that's basically where we're at right now. Engine and tranny are set (back & down from stock) and the turbo just came in. So now it's time for Dustin to do his thing! Fab up turbo headers, DP etc. etc. and get the thing rolling! http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...h_DSC_0008.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...h_DSC_0021.jpg |
Awesome build! Keep the pics coming!! I really like the green!!!
|
If it comes out anything like the drawings, it's gonna be super cool!
|
concept looks wicked!
the progress to dat also looks great good luck with it. |
Hell...even I am getting tired of all the Camaro builds. Nice project!
|
Awesome project in the works! Renderings are killer. Look forward to watch this one progress.
|
Sweet project! I have to agree... the green is awesome!
|
I really looking forward to this build.
?? What is the name of the heat absorber you used in this picture Quote:
|
Great project, should be great to follow along with.
Love the rendering, this is the money shot. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...rfinal1280.jpg |
Awesome build and excelent job on the Gauges and dash.

great looking renderings! In the end you beat me to it - I have been road racing my car and will stick with it for a couple more years but in the near future I am going to do a 70 fastback and you have virtually the same color scheme I planned, just "flipped"! Looks even better than I expected it too (my race car is two tone black on the bottom/olive green on top with black stripe full length - I was going to do the same to the 70. You are flipped with green on the bottom and black on top - again, looks great.
I had a 70 Grabber Sportsroof for years that had a "reverse C" stripe like the 69 Boss and love the look - your take on it with the GT2 and 363 looks great. Shot of my car for grins - green and black cars rule! Best of luck on the build - will subscribe and follow along. |

oops, dropped the pic, turned out to be just a bit too big
|
Love this build also .keep the updates comming....
And Tim anymore info on your 914 or a link to specs nice porsche.. |
Very cool build....keep the pics coming as you progress
|
Thanks for all the kind words!
The paint scheme is inspired by the 69 Trans Am driven by George Follmer. All my cars are green and/or black so the combination was a no-brainer. ;) The wheels were the closest I could find that looked like a present day relative of the classic mini-lite racing wheels. I don't know the name of the heat barrier, will check. But it works great. Dustin at CPR is full on the turbo placement and piping arrangement and I'm working on the carbon parts, so hopefully more pictures soon! We're shooting for a spring premiere. |
Barry - I have been following yours too, I will post some info over there for you.
|
Keep us posted! Must have been a nightmare buying a car in the states and shipping to Denmark!
Darren |
Darren, the car is in San Diego where the builder is (CPR Streetmachines). I'm flying over now and then to do some of the work though.
When it's nearly complete it'll be shipped here. Actually quite routine: 4 cars in a 40', pay $1600, wait 5-6 weeks. The last part is what REALLY sucks! Anyway, time for an update. Working on the turbo setup and the carbon parts, both takes a loooong time before it looks like anything at all, lots of planning and prep. Engine is back in and moved way back and down, no issues clearing the hood: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...106_081008.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...106_080956.jpg Turbo placement is done and the helper bracket taking most of its weight is in, 5" DP being mocked up and cutting for the IC: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...106_085550.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...106_101543.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...108_082429.jpg Next is the hot side with each header going all the way to the T6 flange (no merge). |
I'll post some pics of the carbon work in a couple of days, it's all work 1-2 hours, wait 12 hrs to dry/harden/cure.
So to get some instant results I mounted my Oregon Scientific actioncam on my helmet. Simple click on off mount that comes in the camera kit, now epoxy/glassed to the helmet. Needs a bit of finish + some black sealer on the edges: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...h_DSC_0001.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...h_DSC_0003.jpg |
Very nice - excellent detals such as rear diffuser.

Mee too , Zees renderings has been my favorites long time... |
Yeah, definitely nice work by Zee. Managed to find that exact green too: MG British Racing Green (as used on the 2007 Exige for instance). Getting the exhaust up that high requires a fair amount of work but it's worth it.
295 rear tires will fit a 69-70 without issues (maybe a little hammering), the 315's required a little extra room in the front of the inner wheel well: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...119_190016.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...0119_19017.jpg |
Quote:
I agreee!! How are you planning to do that diffuser? I really like it a lot! |
Diffusor is done in 10mm Airex foam core and carbon fibre and clear epoxy as a "positive" molding. A one off thats taking me ages to fab and sand... :( The hood scoop alone has probably taken me 15 hrs so far.
|
Very cool mustang. I like the wheels. and it looks like the company who is doing the build is pretty fast. Congrats. Can't wait to see some more progress.
|
Right side header all in one piece. Just needs some detailing, wastegate flange etc. Nice with the notched towers and the extra room!

I picked up the quarter emblems from the laser shop today! I dislike the original Mach I emblems so we tossed ideas around and came up with these. I made a set of 3½" slightly domed aluminum emblems, sanded them for an age with 800 grit, had them anodized and then laser "milled" 0.2mm deep with an industrial laser.
Drawing the 2D logo first in Corel Draw and then in 3D (Solidworks) was the worst part and probably took 6 hours... You can convert simpler 2D geometries fairly automatically in Solidworks but this came out as more than 3.500 splines and had to be handled area by area... The emblem will be recessed into the qtr panel. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...216_190703.jpg |
Very nice emblems! Cool idea!
|
Thanks! Being creative is hard work. Nothing like just building stuff. LOL
Some progress made on the IC core, though we're still waiting on the last parts. Dustin @ CPR can really weld  : http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...210_070154.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...210_070151.jpg Also doing work on the torque arm mount. Welded it into the floors for max ground clearance & stiffness. Still need to position the actual mounting bracket: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...212_233849.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...213_061326.jpg |
