1971 Turbo Dart - Project "Deceiver"
I didn't think this was worthy of the space on Lateral-G being that it probably won't be to the caliber of most of the rides here.
But Scott seemed to think otherwise, so here it is. Finally decided to tackle my first turbo build. Actually its my first build of any car. I sold my 1998 Z28 Camaro and went old school like I should have done in the first place. This car will be a street car with light strip duty. I'm going to push this 318 till it pops and then put a purpose built 360 in. My end goal is ~550hp/600tq in this little dart. Should make for an insane ride. This is what the build consists of right now. Stock 318 motor 904 torqueflight 8 3/4 rear 2.73 gears open diff. Master Power T70 .68 AR Turbo Edelbrock headers flipped Aeromotive A1000 fuel pump Aeromotive 13202 regulator Summit fuel filter Still need to purchase the rest of the items needed to make this work. Looking at getting a JGS 40MM wastegate and 50mm Tial BOV. Spectre carb hat and a 650 blow through carb. Innovate Wideband and boost gauge. Going to run locked timing for now with the plans of installing a 6al and btm some day. How it looked a few weeks ago when I first got it. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t..._0045Large.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t..._0067Large.jpg Vinyl top and glue removed. The top will be getting painted black before spring. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0166.jpg Battery relocated. Now you see it. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/_MG_2273.jpg Now you don't. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/_MG_2329.jpg LOTS of work and learning to do. I'm going to wait on body work for now and get the car smoking tires first. That way all the cutting and massaging is done on an unfinished body. Hopefully next winter I will be able to possibly do the mini tub and frame off restoration with the help of a friend who runs a shop called Gordy's Custom Rods. Any Advice and help is welcome! |
Kill switch installed.
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0163.jpg Was looking for a good place to put a tach. Ended up ripping the cluster out and deciding on doing a custom one. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0178.jpg Starting to make the template for a gauge backing plate. Ran out of time today so all I got done was the initial measurement. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0202.jpg Should have plenty space for gauges. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0204.jpg I think I will be using the AutoMeter Pro Comp series gauges. http://www.autometer.com/img/products/5153_d.jpg |
Should be a fun project!!!
That 360 turbo is gonna move that car!! How much boost? |
I want a ride when you get it on the road.
|
Hopefully it will be on the road this spring so I can give you a ride in it.
On the stock motor i'm going to see if it will handle 8-10psi. Might find an intercooler for it. Will have to see how the funds look once i get to the cold side routing. |
Well I got my Aeromotive stuff today.
The pump is a wee bit larger then I expected. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0031.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0033.jpg Here are the headers that will be massaging to fit. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0048.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0062.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/IMG_0064.jpg |
I'm so diggin the car and even the color. I really like these cars, so grandma like when left alone. I wouldn't touch the outside. Sleeper City!!:unibrow:
|
nice dart with a nice colour...
i'm interesting to see your mod's... |
love the project... you do clean work..
but the view behind the car in the first pics takes me back... I lived in Fergus Falls MN for a while, not sure i miss the winters though.... |
AWESOME!!!!
I can see the engine taking the 8 psi. An intercooler would be nice!!! |
Looks like a great project! I'm wondering though, why did you put the kill switch under the hood instead of inside the cabin or on the rear of the car?
|
Its not going to be a strip car so I didn't want it in the back.
Thought it was kind of a large and ugly switch to try and hide in the cab so under the hood it went. Who knows, maybe with all the messing around in the interior I might find a nice spot for it. Just realize I ordered the wrong FPR. Returning it for the AEI - 13204 model. |
awsome project, cant wait to see more
|
i like it. my car is going to be a low $$$ build to since i work in a plant that makes auto parts i never no when or how much i'm working:lateral:

Removed the steering column, ps pump, and ps sector.
Cut the dash a bit and finished the template for the gauges. |
got to get rid of that camaro parking only sign:wow:
|
The owner of the shop has a 68 Camaro, so I don't think he will let me take it down.
|
sorry... clean car.
|
I've always loved those old Darts, freind of mine had one High School, same color only they painted the roof Beige, stuffed a 440 under there but could never hold the power so a 340 ended up there.
|
Got the rest of my fuel system today along with a few gauges, carb adapter and B&M mega shifter.
A grands worth of parts sitting on that table. The stuff shouldn't cost that much!!! O well do the fuel system once and do it right. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...ystemparts.jpg |
It's like Christmas. :D
A little off topic, Shawn, but what camera are you shooting with? |
Christmas it definitely is!
I'm using a Canon XTI. Just got a new Sigma 10-20mm ultra wide angle lens for it yesterday. Loving the lens so far, it makes for shooting automotive subject a lot more interesting and fun! Maybe some day I'll get a chance to shoot your 4 wheeled masterpiece. Forgot to add that I also picked up a used manual steering sector and column. The Exhaust piping on the drivers side wouldn't clear the power steering without MAJOR massaging. I'm also trying to figure out where and how i'm going to mount the ignition in the dash. |

Loving the lens so far, it makes for shooting automotive subject a lot more interesting and fun! That wide angle lens will make you spoiled, and people will give you all sorts of goofy looks while you're taking pictures. They can't understand how you can shoot the whole car from so close.... My neighbor had a Dart when I was growing up, red with big meats (at the time) stuffed under the rear fenders and a 360 that I could hear all the way down the block. Very cool. Mick Mick |
Glad you got talked into posting your car. I think it's gonna be bitchin and fun to drive for sure.
|
NICE!!!!
Keep us posted. Did you say you were going to mini tub the rears? |
Yes, mini tub is part of the plan. Won't happen until the body work phase though.
|
I haven't had a chance to get out and work on the car much in the last 3 weeks.
Bought a Holley 4150 4777-4 Carb off of ebay to convert to blow through. Bought a manual steering column and manual steering sector out of a 69 Dart. The new cluster panel is coming together, still have a lot to do though. The design portion takes waaaay longer then doing the actual work so far. Removed all the plastic trim from the dash and will be making a front panel for the heat controls and figure out a metal panel to cover up the big hole the glove box lock cylinder sits in. Dash should look nice and clean without all that fake wood grain impregnated plastic that was on there. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/Dashwork.jpg Does anyone have recommendations on some good reclining seats? Would like to stay under or right around $300 a seat. I've never had so much fun working on a car. The options and things I can do are only limited by the amount of cash and Argon in the bottle. :thumb: |
that dash is gonna look great, Corbeau Sport Seats are 460 for the pair, thats what i put in my car, click the link if you want to see how they look in there
http://www.racing-seats-usa.com/90000.html |
How much did it cost you to have those seats covered like you did?
|
Looks good Freak.
Keep us posted. |
$125 a seat

I don't know if you can change the title on this thread or not Scott.
I tried but it doesn't seem to update. Deceiver works way better for this build then Unforeseen. EVERYTHING is taking way longer then I thought it would take. Especially when I can only work on it 2 times a week at about 4 hours a crack. Plasma cut the holes and then cleaned them up with pneumatic die grinder. No fancy laser cutting or bending breaks. Just some good old blood sweat and tears. Panel was sealed so that it doesn't rust on me by the time I get back to it. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...sterscrews.jpg Still having a blast. Wish I had been doing stuff like this a long time ago! |
I updated the thread title for you, Shawn.
Looks great, keeps the pics coming, especially the creative ones. |
More parts today.
I didn't realize that the wastegate was going to be a physically large as it is. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/image002.jpg http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/image003.jpg 50 MM http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/image004.jpg 50 MM http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/image001.jpg |
nice stuff!
|
On the intercooler. From what I gather it looks like you are somewhat trying to stick to a budget. I've got some friends who run or have built turbo Fox Body Mustangs. They have been known to use Intercoolers from Dodge Cummins Diesel's, slightly modified of course. I'm very intrigued by this project. I love the sleeper tone its taking!
|
What year Cummings are they getting them from and what are they having to tweak on them to get it to work?
We have gotten ~10 inches of snow today so far. Good times!! Went out to the shop and cleaned up the BOV and Wastegate. Put the smallest springs into them to start with since the gate had the heavy springs in it. The finish could have been better on them. They did have some dings and scrapes, but all in all they didn't seem bad for what they cost. Mounted the A1000 on the drivers side inside frame rail right after the axle. Will start running lines after I get the subframe connectors in. Tomorrow I will head back out to finish up cluster and then start on finishing the face of the dash. Ordering up a 20gal fuel cell that will mount where the spare tired hump in the trunk was. |
thats gonna be a great ride, I was trying to do the same thing for a daily driver but could not find a decent body in time. Mopar Action was also doing a trick volare called the green brick for road racing.

I'm not sure. The guy who started all of that has moved to Iowa. I will contact him and find out.
