My 67 finally out for paint!
4 Attachment(s)
Way back in 2004 when I tore this car apart for the first time, my intention was to build the car mechanically over the first winter and blow it apart and paint it the next. Things never go as planned, do they? It was two years later before it ran again. I ran a track day and did a few days of Power Tour in 2007, but that was about it. I figured I would take it apart that winter and redo the paint which was getting tired. By the time I got the ambition (courage) to tear it apart again it was March 2008. No problem I thought, I’ll get it back from the media blaster in a week and get cranking on it. I had dabbled in body work years ago working it my dad’s shop when I was a teenager. Though I was pleased with how solid it was once the paint was stripped, nothing is ever as quick or easy as you think it will be. I finally decided to leave it to a professional.
Long story short, it is finally out for body and paint. The day after Christmas I hauled it up to Telly at Violetto Auto Works. You might know him as TellyV here on the board. After seeing his bitchin Cuda, I knew he could turn out the kind of job I wanted on the Camaro. It doesn’t hurt that he is within a couple hours of where I live and virtually a stone’s throw from my engine builder, Wegner Motorsports. Not being able to leave anything alone and after finding a screaming deal on a complete L92, I sold the LS2. Of course I couldn’t leave the L92 stock, “Hello Wegner’s?” I wanted to go EFI and wanted something unique, so I ordered up a Precision Metalcraft fabricated intake like Jody put on his Chevelle. Well you had to know I couldn’t put this thing back together with stock hood hinges. “Hello Ring Brothers?” That has been the story of this build. This really is a disease. Here are a couple of progress pics. If you are not familiar, see the link in my sig for before pictures, both when I got the car and before it came apart this time. Can anybody think of a catchy name for this beast? |

I'm seeing red!
|
Wait a sec... is that your red car???
What the hell did I miss? lol You had better get me an killer under construction shot or two or else! |
SWEET! What paint code is that? Nailing the 'right' red can be a challenge!

Unfortunately all I have is some relatively low res progress shots. My hard drive crashed a few months back with no backup  Bigger, badder L92 with Precision Metalcraft sheetmetal intake for eye candy. Should be on the dyno next week. Shooting for March 1 to install engine and trans. Telly wants to paint it together to avoid inconsistency from panel to panel. Will shoot lots of pics that weekend. Anthony, it's plain old GM code 74 red. It is one of the deepest reds I have seen, plus anybody can mix some up for touch ups or panel repairs down the road... |
Nice!!

I'll work on taking better pictures as we go along!!!!
|
A little more progress, doors are hung and will be hanging the front clip soon.

Well after an all day fight the front clip is on and door gaps are good. I'll start the bodywork tomorrow and hopefully she'll be painted by the end of the month!!!

Well, I spent longer in travel time today than I actually did at the shop. It is a little over two hours each way to get there and back. Telly and I bolted the engine and trans in the car today. As I worked on other stuff he was in the booth edging the fenders. Great guy I am huh? Making the guy go in to the shop on Sunday lol.
He plans to reassemble everything this week, mask it up and shoot it. The black valve covers are going to go. I have silver billet ones from Wegner, just forgot to bring them along. Yes, the stock dipstick is going away, and last but not least I think I will paint or coat the alternator fan some shade of silver or gray. |
that looks nice
Where did that Vid go of the Ls2 you had up? sounded tuff What the specs on the new beast? looks sweet |

So now the toughest thing is, I was supposed to be in Florida until Wednesday, but due to the fact that our 6 month old was having a tough time being out of her familiar surroundings we came home early. Now I have some vacation days still scheduled at the beginning of the week, it will be tough not to road trip to check her out.
Maybe I'll save the vacation days til I get it home, so I can spend a few solid garage days and get reassembling. |
nice:thumbsup:
|
That a killer intake who made it? nice and clean look like you are missing some parts but they are all their,Great job under the hood should be out standing.
|
Precision Metalcraft intake. Thanks for the nice comments.

okay after 9hrs or so of wetsanding and at least the same for buffing here we go finally outside for a couple pics.
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/i...llyv/buff1.jpg http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/i...llyv/buff2.jpg ok now some bad news the hood was a major pain in the butt 1/2 gallon of mud and a full day of hard labor http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/i...lyv/hood-1.jpg |
If you don't like that, you don't like girls!!
|
One mistake I made is buying that Glasstek carbon fiber hood from Year One. It was before any other carbon ones were out other than the one off ones that the Red Witch got. Live and learn I guess.
Pics look great Telly. I can't wait to see it in person. |
tail panel and stripe painted flat black. Hood will be on tomorrow and back to Jeff's on saturday.

Jeff you HAVE to be stoked!! |

Checkbook will certainly be lighter after this weekend. :wow: Telly will be on a buying spree. |
Jeff showed up today and pick up his car, I'm sure he'll be posting some more pics as he puts it back together. Now maybe I can take a weekend off. Anyway it was great working with Jeff I'm looking forward to beating on our cars together this summer.

Looks good! Did you get the hood painted?
|
That is another story I should maybe let Telly tell. Yes the hood is painted, but the first time it was on the car since the nose has been back on was this morning. Let me just say that it was good that I did not get there til noon. We finished putting the nose together, inner fenders (I forgot to bring the brackets last time), fender corners and lower valence. Then we loaded it up and came home.
I am very happy with how it came out. Tomorrow I want to get the brakes, wheels and tires back on. That should make it look like its old self again. Also, who knew that if you wanted to withdraw a significant amount of cash from your account that they want you to order it ahead of time. It's a bank for god's sake! Took me two branches to get enough cash to get it out of hock. |
I guess since this time it wasn't in 'paint jail' a loan shark wasn't offered for bail!
|
So about that hood, Yes I usually fit everything before paint but due to the time schedule I decided to go ahead and paint it well that wasnt the smartest thing to do, after about 6 hrs of moving adjusting and slotting some holes we pulled the hood off for the 100th time and found out that the left side holes were drilled about 3/8 of and inch to low, not a big deal normally most fiberglass/carbon fiber hoods have steel or aluminum plates glued in them so you can just drill different holes not this hood so I drilled new holes welded the new nut to the rear of there threaded plugs and epoxy'd them in, so I decided to send it home without the hood so I can slot the hood and use fiber glass resine to secure them better, we wont even go into the inner fenderliner hell we went through. Thanks for the comments guys and I also have a spot open if anyone needs some work done!!!
