Update on my rusty firebird
It's been awhile since I have made any progress on this, but I found some time to work on it this weekend. I got both quarters, roof, and tail panel off. Here are some pics.

Demo day can be fun! Good to see you are going with full quarters!
What brand of sheet metal are you using? |

I got some more done over the past several weeks. The passenger quarter is prepped and fitted, I used this stuff called rust bullet on all the metal surfaces, I started to cut out and fit the trunk floor, passenger drip rail is mounted, and the flanges for the roof are ready to go. It's starting to look like a car again

Looks like things are coming back together. Keep up the good work
Let us know how those repo firebird quarters fit. Mike |

It's good to see another Bird in the making. Looks good so far. Are you keeping it original or will you do mods?

Looks great! That's a ton of work to do in you own garage. You're going about it the right way, making sure all your gaps are good before final welding - I'm there too!

Probably some mods; better rear-end, the original 4 speed is long gone so I will have decide what tranny (it came with a TH400), I'll beef up the suspension, convert to disk brakes, but I will keep the 400 motor, probably stroke it and get some aluminum heads on it. |

I'm just waiting for the other quarter and roof to show up at Summit. I've got those areas prepped and ready to go as soon as they get in. Pics will follow soon after.
Quick question for you body guys: What do you use to fill in the area where the drip rails and roof meet? There was some sort of sealer/filler in there. I've been told mar-glass and filler. What about metal based filler? Thanks for the input :lateral:  :woot: |
Wow. I thought that I was brave when I tried my first panel replacement (quarter skins) but your taking the "baptism by fire" thing to a whole new level. Everything looks great. Keep up the great work.

Looking great!! Let me know how the roof goes, I'll be doing one soon too on a '70 camaro.
Pm sent to you regarding the Pontiac motor and parts. |
looks good man! ton of work and it's coming along great

Thanks for the compliments. I'll post up some progress pics this week. I finally got the driver quarter panel sitting right. When I first popped it on, it sat about 1/2" higher than the door. I ended up cutting at the bottom edge to get it lower. The passenger quarter went right on with no issues. I should have the roof fitted by this weekend. Then it's fenders and making sure all the gaps are good before I weld it together. :willy: :bunny:

It's not looking so rusty now!

Picked up my stuff from Summit Racing; it's nice having them so close http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/IMGP1007.jpg Driver quarter http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/IMGP1010.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/IMGP1012.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/IMGP1031.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/IMGP1033.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/IMGP1042.jpg I picked up this subframe; already been converted to disc, new bushings, steering, etc.. Just needs some powdercoat and a good cleaning. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/IMGP1037.jpg Nine inch rear; basically got it for free  http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/IMGP1039.jpg |

Your rear door line must line up to the rear quarters -- because the quarters don't move -- so if that lines up and you're happy... then go ahead and tack 'er up. The front fender line is adjustable and you may have to modify the door edge - or fender edge to get that perfect gap (depending on what you're happy with).... Once you have the rear quarters on - the trunk gap is even and perfect (to your liking) and the tailpan is in and you're happy with that... then it sounds like it's time to start sticking her together. RE Drip rails: Cut 'em off while you have the chance. :wow: You live in Reno - and aren't going to drive it in the rain anyway! LOL |

It's been awhile since I've updated this. Here are some progress pics.
Here's some floor action. Looking back, I should have done the full floor, but live and learn I guess. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0053.jpg Rear panel welded on http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0051.jpg Viper T56 http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0055.jpg Global West upper arms http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0057.jpg |
Roof to quarter welded together
http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0052.jpg I had to add some metal and metal filler to get the molding to quarter fitted correctly http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0059.jpg Both quarters came off one more time to get this gap even. I also welded and filled the lower quarter to rocker seam http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0049.jpg Filled the seam with All-metal filler http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0062.jpg http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/d...d/DSC_0065.jpg |
My original trunk lid was beyond repair, so I picked this one up off of craigslist

Looking GREAT!!
Lots of work! But so worth it! You should be proud of yourself! |
Great work on your car! Your build is inspiring and I am glad too see another 67firebird project. Once the winter is over I will be heading out to my unheated garage to start my fun.
