most radical second gen :)
Yes, John's post made me post this one as well. I own a 79TA and have thought how great it would look if it would sit even lower. DSE's 71 camaro looks great as does DE Jr's but they can both go lower. The YO Bandit looks great but can also go lower. So does anyone out there have any pics or a worked second gen that sits as low as some of these first gens? If someone wants to do a chop that's fine. A real car would just be cooler though.
I'm thinking the biggest limiting factor for getting a 2nd gen even lower than what has been done are the wheel wells. There's not a lot of room to move a wheel up from what I can tell. I'm no metal fabricator though. Thanks |
Speaking of late 2nd Gen Camaros.... what was that body kit... like around '80.... was it Motion deal? Iroc? Anyone know what I'm talking about? :_paranoid lol
|
How bout this one?

Scott, there were a few actually. Herb Adam's did the Fire Ams and a Camaro equivalent. They had whale tail spoilers as an options and I believe the camaro could be had with a body kit. There was also the Mecham TAs also known as Macho TAs. It wouldn't surprise me if Motion had one too. It was the 70s. Body kits where about as numerous as aftermarket Ttop companies, lol.

Trey, I did some digging. It was the 81 Yenko Turbo Z that I was thinking of. I think it's pretty cool.

ultimate 2nd gen
In 1980 GM had the ultra z Wich was a turbo car. I always liked that car

my old 1980 Motion Phase 3 car
|
most radical?
f-bomb of course :D |
F-bomb and 2ndgenracers 73 transam pro touring/ drag car. AKA Splitter
The transam gets my vote hands down for versatility. |
how about Jessie Greening's car ? I saw it at sema , beautiful in person
|
Nice Car!!

Nice car clill. How many of those were built? Did you sell it? |
I've never seen those before Scott. They did look pretty good.
Charley, do you have any more info on your Motion car? Not bad at all. I wonder though, were the Motion cars and Yenkos based on the same body kit or what? I had forgotten about splitter. I need to look at that one again as I believe it still has leafs in the back with a Watts link. I'm fearful that my ideas require a four link in the back in order for the car to sit low enough. While that would be nice, I'm poor and don't see that changing anytime soon. Thanks guys. Keep em coming. |

I think the real most radical is just about to come alive; https://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=12427 |
They only did one 1980 Motion. The guy brought his car in and spent 27K at Motion. A friend in Canada has it now.
|
I've got a pic of a 78 can-am somewhere...
|
They may not be the most radical, but the dale JR and jesse greening camaro are it for me.
I was not to fond of the 2nd gens until I saw the dale jr camaro. Rodger |
DSE's 1970 test car is it for me. Not exactly the most radical, but practical and looks like a blast to drive !!!
Is Kyle on this site, I need to ask him for a test drive........lol. Probably not gonna happen though. Now getting back on track, the full chassis Swartz and the F-bomb are two impressive rides. The year one bandits and any Motion built Second gen would be contenders too, but maybe it just hasn't been built..........yet !! I'm working on one right now, see project Fool's Gold in the projects section.
The limiting factor when getting low is the outer rear wheel wells. There is only about an inch give or take a 1/4 between it and the outside skin (qaurter panel). You can't move it enough for an appreciable difference considering the amount of work. In my opinion swelling or reworking the qaurter in this area will ruin the smooth lines of the car. You can get lower than the DSE car or Dale jr. car but only with smaller section width tires and wheels. To get into the deeper part of the wheelwell and sit the car down further your wheel/tire combo would have to be about 2.5-3 inches inside of the wheel opening lip. I experimented with how low I could take the LD 3-link when notching my frame rails. The suspension wasn't the limiting factor the outer wheelwells lock you into a certain stance while still retaining useable travel. |
Oh I've seen yours Tommy. I'm on muscle rides and pt.com I love it. I figured the rear wheel wells were a problem. Thank you for the insight as that's the first place I was going to go to see about gaining some room.

I would have to agree with Neil B thats Marks Giles 78 camaro is just bad ass

:ttiwop:
I think for overall performance and custom fabrication Detroit Speed and Engeneering's second gen takes it. http://www.detroitspeed.com/images/P...amaro-104L.jpg A close second would be Dale Jr's Camaro. http://www.detroitspeed.com/images/P...alejr-449L.jpg |
|
There is also the greening auto company Camaro.

hmmmm that picture of the DSE test car has it sitting lower than I thought. Considering my rear wheel wells are bigger than a camaros, I should be able to put my TA that low no problems. Question is can I do it with leaf springs in the rear? Anyone know the answer to that? Actually, can my front suspension even go that low without using their subframe?
To answer my own questions though, I think Giles car is the most radical. That article calling it NASCAR touring is a really good way to sum it up. |
I think silver summed it up right there. I would also add Splitter to the list.
If I had to name the baddest of the bad it would probably be the DSE test car for me. I love the almost stock look under the hood and the subtlety of the car. |

I wish I had a better camera and was able to take more shots of it. And it's awesome how it burns your eyes when you're cruising behind him. |
Mark Giles' car is sweet, for me it just looks too much like a race car. Tubular chassis, fabricated aluminium dash, full roll cage.
I still rather the DSE Camaro. It's just my taste in cars, I like performance in a stock looking car. JMHO Totally not putting Giles Camaro down. |

Not knocking Mark Giles car, it's just my taste. He does have some nice fab work there. |
