This is an update to my build thread:

Today the motor and tranny were finally dropped in! It was a beautiful day out, and everything seemed to go just about right. Before we dropped the motor in, we steam cleaned the engine bay:

We joined the motor with the tranny and hooked it up to the forklift and got it ready to drop in.

Lowering it in was pretty easy, like I said everything seemed to fall into place today, Except for the fact that we forgot to lay the headers in the bay before we bolted the motor in. so it was fun to jack up the motor and maneuver the headers into place, but we got it done. Got the carb on, the air filter, starter, oil filter on and fuel pump.

My friend whose shop im working in just brought out his 72 cuda with a 383 magnum in it today. Sweet car, starts right up after sitting for a while.

Tomorrow were going to start the wiring, and fire her up. Then comes a little more welding inside the car, then the interior can be put back in. then the gauges get wired in, and interior wiring gets done. Then the car is being sent to all American muffler for custom exhaust piping, and then paint finally.

Today we filled the motor up with fluids, and tried to start it up with open headers. It didn’t seem to spark correctly n we couldn’t fire it up today. Its getting good compression, air, and fuel, so we think its an ignition problem possibly the timing of the cam? The carb is blowing, and not sucking. The first video is basically al that we heard today, and the second one is after we tried adding ether  but all it did was almost give me a heart attack..

Cool, where are you located?

im on Long Island, NY

Today we got the motor running. We took the water pump and timing cover off to realize that the problem was that we installed the cam according to the circle not the triangle. So we switched that up, put it back together, and it started right up. The motor has GREAT compression, and runs awesome.

So before the car gets sent out for exhaust piping, we decided to try to assemble most of the interior. We had to improvise for some sheet metal for the drivers side front floor. Found an old 52 for pickup with a rust free hood, so we borrowed it. The metal worked perfectly and fit like a glove after some cutting of course. Again, I forgot my camera so I had to use the phone, but ill have good pictures soon.

We got the welding all finished, seam sealed, and por15ed the whole floor.

We painted the dash in the car and taped everything off. The dash came out amazing, looks like its right from GM.

Today we started to throw in the interior pieces like carpet, seats, steering wheel, radio, and some of the paneling. We put in the door panels that I painted and had reupholstered, and they look amazing. They weren’t easy at all to get in, but once we figured out a way, we repeated on the other side. Each set of panels is a whole project in itself with screws, fitment, and most importantly the order you throw them on in. We are going to try to have most of the interior done by the time the car goes out for exhaust, but who knows.

love those G bodys!

Lots of work, I did the same floor repairs on my rotted 84 regal....except I used a dodge caravan hood, for metal he heh heh  Keep the pictures coming, the car looks great!

Cutlass2181 02-16-2009 11:33 PM

So the car is finally just about done. Its about 98% complete, with a couple little things still left to do, like properly attach some interior panels, tint windows, front license plate, e-brake cable, and a couple other minor things. The car came out awesome, and the exhaust sounds amazing. I got it done at a performance muffler place near me. Flowtech headers with an x-pipe and borla mufflers. It exits with 2 chrome tips after the rear tires at 45 degrees. It looks and sounds awesome. Theres a couple little things left to do in order to tweak the motor, like adjust the valves, re torque everything down, and mess with the timing. Ive put about 300 miles on the car in a about a week, so its about time for the first oil change. The pictures are of the car now as it stands, before those minor little things left to do. The car is my daily driver for about another year, but after that it goes off the road, gets paint, and becomes a weekend car.

After I put some miles on the motor I decided to have a little fun. When I bought the car I was told it had a 373 posi rear, but of course it doesn’t. with the new motor, this seems to be a problem. The car really sounds like it wants to go, but it cant. A posi rear, and new gears is certainly the next thing on my list within the year:
