New Project 72 Camaro Coolwelder62
3 Attachment(s)
Yesterday it snowed 6 inches so i went out in the shop and fabbed up a new subframe for my next project car a 72' camaro. When the weather gets a little nicer i am going to get the shell media blasted and get started on the sheetmetal install. The car is a little rough right now so i am going to wait until it is in a little better shape to post pics...so far the only pictures i have are of the subframe. Scott

I look forward too seeing this build. Your last car was killer
|
Next time it snows 6 inches, if you could just fab me up a subframe for my camaro that would be great. That is one nice frame, looks very professional. Cannot wait to start seeing progress pics of the car.

Nice work Scott!!

I really am not trying to rain on a parade or anything, but the thing that scares me about doing my own subframe is how in the world will it look after the alignment. Will there be 30 shims on one side and the need for -30 shims on the other, LOL! How does one find where to locate mounting points and how do you get one side to be near exactly as the other. Then how will it ride and handle with your weight, center of gravity and weight bias? Don't mean to highjack. I really like what I am seeing here, just have a few questions on how it's done. Thanks.

Suspenion math
Thanks for the kind words. I had my 3rd. grader do the math & plot the suspenion pick up points. I am pretty sure it work work just fine. I am not going to use shims I think I will have that same 3rd. grader machine me some soild alum. spacers. You know kind of like what Art morrison uses on their fine driving frt. subframe.

It's hard to detect sarcasm on a message board....How many times has this 3rd grader failed third grade so they could be equal in knowledge and stature of Art Morrison? And how would this 3rd grader plot in real space the suspension points? What kind of equipment did this youngster use, besides his or her 3rd grade education? |
I guess those of you on here who haven't seen any of scotts work or any of the cars he has built over the past 10 years you wouldn't understand. Scott builds cars of the same caliber of Trepanier and Foose. keep up the good work scott! Kevin

Really Smart 3RD grader
My youngster has always been really good at pin the tail on the donkey. Some how he knows just were to put things so they come out in the right spot. Hes also really good at finding water in the desert. I think if I rise him right he could be our next great republican president. Tomorrow I am will have him start on the 4 link rear suspenion. I will post some photos of Hunter at his deck w/ his crayons hard at work.He really loves to surprize me w/ his new ideas. Thanks for reading.Scott.

Scott that 2nd gen sub came out really nice.
|
How about you set him down at the computer and have him tell us how he comes up with this stuff. You can always learn something from someone.
|
Scott, looking good man. When I have some money I will def have you build one for me. I am going to get ahold of you and make a trip down there to learn something from your son

Rayn I am thinking about doing the sub frames in DIY kit form. Let me know what you think.Scott.
|
I think that would be a great idea Scott. I am sure you could get some takers on that. I will have to give you a call soon. I think I will be able to at least squeeze out some cash to put a new floorpan in my car.
|
Scott, would you be willing to do some roll-bar / dash board work on my '69?
I met you at the KC Camaro-Fest last year and was asking about your dash. Mine was two-toned with the mini-lites. |

I have a few questions Scott. It appears that you're using a Fox body mustang rack. Did you perform any modifications to it?
The rest appears to be C6? Were there any specific requirements you were trying to hit when designing the geometry? I'm in the process of planning my front sub utilizing C5 components. What is your flange to flange width with that rack? Are you happy with the way your steering arms turned out? I've been trying to think of a cost effective method to create some arms for my sub, but thought the accuracy required for them would be higher than what's achievable with bent steel. If you're happy with your approach I might have to look into doing something similar. |
That looks good Scott.
Any updates? |
C-5/C-6 frt sub frame
The rack I used is a 80-93 fox style AGR 15:1 rack from jegs $249.95 .Flange to flange is 60.0inches. My steering arms are 1.0X1.25 cold roll steel bar stock W/ .875 o.d X .188 wall 4130 tubing bungs Tig welded togather. When Mark built the Mule He used round tubing to make his steering arms so I think my design will work.My Goal was to build this next car on a super tight budget. So when the local Chevy dealer donated the C-6 corvette parts, I built my on frt. end so I could save the $7000.00 grand needed to get the unit from another supplier.I am working on the shell repair sheet metal now. In a few weeks I will post photos of the progress. Thanks Scott.

this is a pretty bold statement the subframe looks nice but looks like art morrison parts to me. steering arms and brackets etc. Hope you used a longer coil over than that short little thing they used as well. |
I liked the way AME built there sub frame. It works really good. I know Because I own one. I looked at everybodys stuff. And wanted to build my own using my AME subframe as a giude line. My shocks will use a 2 inch longer stroke frt shock.W/ ajustable upper mounts giving me ride HT. ajustment W/O using shock stroke. I am builing my own 4 link rear suspenion for the car also.I have a feeling that will get some folks bagging on me.If I wanted a car built with a credit card I would call DSE. Because there stuff is clearly the best products out there for sale. But am having a ton of fun building every thing my self for this car.

Scott,
The frame looks great! I've had Mark at Overkill do some work on my '69, and he's told me a little about ya - would love to see your '69 in person sometime... Keep up with the pictures, -Adam |

Thanks for the info on the rack. After thinking about it a little more last night, I figure I might as well give the steering arms a shot as well. It wouldn't be too difficult to build a jig to insure both arms are bent correctly and are the same length. |
I too built a jig to make sure both sides were the same. The first test show no signs of bump steer.
|
Good job on the frame I like the way you used the adj mount for the shock.:hail: :hail:

"I have a feeling that will get some folks bagging on me."
Some folks love the phrase "the right way" .... there is no right way to have someone else build your car. Good lookin stuff. |
Any status on this build Scott??
