might sell it.
I am contemplating selling the car due to the fact that now that i realize what direction i want to go with the car. It just doesnt make sense to me. Because when i plan it out in the end i will just about have swapped out or changed out the whole car. so my debate is wether o not to sell it and the buy more of a project car that cheaper and makes more sense or spend the same amount of money and take over where somone else left off.

If the car is in good shape, keep it. It will be easier and cheaper in the long run.
If the paint is good that is even better. This way your money can be spent on making the mods you want. |
It also depends on how much you think you can get for your car. Is there someone that you know will buy it?

well see that just the thing it will prolly need a new floor pan and atleast one new quarter a hood and a few other things otherwise i would keep it.to the average person it is a good car but when it comes to somthing like this i am a perfectionist so i think it might be in my best intrest to find something cheaper or half complete and pick up where someone else left off.but as far as selling the car im in the military so selling anything is generaly pretty easy due to the fact that the economy never really effects us.

Finishing off where someone else left off is not the best thing to do either. Starting from scratch so you KNOW what you have is the best thing to do. I've seen numerous builds where someone has to fix previous work on a car. You usually wind up paying almost double what it should cost. You know what your car needs now and you know what it is. It's probably the best and safest start you could get. You never know where someone else cut corners and you have to redo the work they screwed up.

very true but i bought this car for 15500 a few months ago and have put prolly 800 into it and still owe 13000 on the loan and now that i have figured out what it needs ill prolly have to spend another thirteen to get the body perfect

One nice thing about rebuilding your car is that it is complete and has all the little pieces that add up fast when you start with a few thousand dollar shell. Starting with a roller is the beginning of a many year build for the average guy. You got into your car for a fair price...I wouldn't sell.

If you can afford it you are better off buying a finished car, because you can rarely build a car for the price you pay for a finished car. Anyone that tells you that can has never built a complete custom car.
|
yeah i thought about buying finished but i want something i can take pride in knowing i did it myself

need more advice.

I would put together a build sheet of what you honestly want and can afford to build...forget keeping up with the Jones' this hobby is like PC's, always better parts coming out and it's to damn hard to keep up...just outline the car you know you will be able to afford/finish.
Then see how many or little changes you would have to make to the car you own now and see if you can justify keeping it or if you really need to start with a differant car. Most of all be honest with yourself...and have fun with it!! |
Sounds like your car is in a similar condition as mine was in. What do you planning on doing with the car? Suspension mods, engine/tranny swap, interior mods, etc? Call me. I'll be happy to talk it over with you. Check your PM's..

What is wrong with the quarter and hood? Hood's can be fixed and painted off the car, and quarters doesn't mean repaint the entire car. I've built plenty of "project" cars that needed $10k- $15k worth of sheetmetal work before paint.
I always advise our customers to start with the best car they can afford/budget. So if you buy a $5k car and need to put $10k in it then paint you'll almost be double what you owe on your car now. If you get yours fixed and painted for another $13k I would personally keep it. Do all the mechanical things first because fitting newer suspension, etc always leads to more sheetmetal changes than you realize. Another thing about project car's is most of the time the car is in pieces and you don't get a chance to inventory all the "missing" parts. This can end up being a $2k - $10k bill replacing bad or missing parts. The more complete the car the better your budget will like you. |
well as I stated i bought it for $15,000. but one quarter needs to be replace for sure due to the fact the who ever had it befor me wrecked the quarter then did a terrible job of trying to recreate the lip over the tire. The hood has a weird dent in it at the bottom of the cowl. Most likly the entire floor pan will have to be replaced. There could be much more i dont know about it until I media blast it down or paint strip it. As I dig into this car I guess im wondering what I really paid for because it seems like im going to have to replace everything due to rust or bondo or a bent trunk lid.I also want to do the full PT make over with it so sooner or later the sub frame will be ditched and the original axle in the back will also be gone to make room for a 4 link and a mini tub and a for 9in.
I got into this car a little to quickly not really knowing what i wanted to do.I know most of you were in this situation or know someone who has so that is why im looking for some feed back I am very open minded and like to be told how it is so if im wrong tell me if you think i should scrap it for a new project tell me I'm in the military so im not easily offended so any help would be appreciated. heres a video of the car it doesnt show alot of flaws but if you have a magnet you can tell P.S. Itdorun i will be calling to discuss and i really appriciate you willing to help me out on this |
