Want Opinions on Next Project
I have finally decided to get out of the late model stuff in favor of getting back to where I started with old muscle. I am looking at building my first PT style build. Seeing as my dad wont let me touch his 71 Nova or 72 C10, I have to buy my own project.
I am looking at a 68 Camaro and a 71 Split Bumper Camaro. Both are in the same range as far as purchase price, Body work needed, and over all shape. I have not ruled out a SWB 67-72 truck either. I really like PorterBuilts drop member and C5 suspension. I guess I am looking for opinions on what platform is the best to start with. Around Bowling Green first gen Camaro’s are all over the place. The 70-73 Camaro’s are rarely seen. I am not looking to set the world on fire with my first build. I am shooting for a good driver that has decent overall handling, braking, and power. I like to the looks of the old cars with the handling of the new cars. I have been spoiled by the typical 700rwhp LS1 Turbo cars I usually turn out of my shop. Any tips, opinions, suggestions, and so forth are welcome. I am glad to be a part of the forum. |
I'd choose a second gen. Reason: I want to build one :D, plus I already have a first gen!

Sounds good.
What shop do you work for? An early model Camaro or a 68 Camaro would be awesome!!! Tons of info and good people here.:lateral:  |
Its really personal preference as far as which body style you like better. First gens have a little more aftermarket support but you won't have a problem building a second gen either. I vote for the split bumper, id love to have one of those one day.

Just wanting to try something different. |
Josh,
Which car do you like? Both of the cars you listed have the potential to be sweet. Keep up the good work. Just so everyone knows: Josh builds turbo systems for 98-02 camaro and 04-06 gto. He has a fantastic rep on LS1tech. Josh built a 800rwhp camaro with a tc76 turbo...WITH STOCK EXHAUST MANIFOLDS. David |

Are you a member of ls1tech.com as well? |
Here's a back half for the c-10 your considering?
|
Why not a 73-87 c10 or a late model s10 or colorado. What about a g body there is a lot cars out there.
|
The 71 Split Bumper gets my vote. Not many of them have been given the treatment. It would be a lot fun to watch one come together here on the board....then again there all fun to watch.
 |
I'd go 2 gen as well. I have absolutely no regrets with my 69, but an early 70's Camaro was a possibility for a moment. Definitely not many now and even less then.

As for other cars I have looked at a few Dusters/Demons. The Pro Touring style is not real prelavent localy. I am looking to set a trend localy and open the shop up to future venues. Looking to expand my line of Fabrication work. I am going to look at the 68 this weekend. It is local. Assuming my 02 Z28 sales as planned I will be picking something up for sure. Its a toss up righ now. |
Josh, I may have to sell my 70 rs Camaro. It is a project car but it is also very complete and is in bare metal at this point. The current eng/trans are toast (really big paper wieghts). Like I said, I may have to sell it. I'll know for sure in the next week or two.

The 2nd gen gets my vote I think we already have enough 1st gens running around.

Well I sold the 2002 Z28 this morning. I am definatley buying a Project. The search begins.
|
Good luck project hunting. I think either the '68 or '70 would be awesome.
I'm guessing it will sport one of your turbo LSX motors? |

Search is over. Didnt last too long.
Deposit has been made on a rust free 1970 Camaro. Factory 350/4spd, A/C, California Car. It is rock solid. I scored a 396 BBC with the deal. The wife is happy trhat I only spent about half of what I had budgeted for the initial purchase. As of right now the build is looking like the following: 1970 Camaro 396 BBC Fuel injected TKO600 or T56 Moser 9" Housing Speed Tech front Bolt on package. Some type of 4 bar system in the rear. Wilwood brakes all around DSE mini tubs I have a set of 17x9.5 and 17x11 Chrome ZR1 wheels for the time being if they will fit. Engine will be built with a 9:1 compression ratio. It will see a Turbo eventually. I will have pics as soon as I get the car home. |
What about a ford i mean camaros are nice but being different can be fun too.
