Trouble Insuring My Corvette
Hey guys this is my first post, I am a new member but have been getting ideas for my corvette for about a year now thanks to all your great post. So here is my issue/problem I am 22 years old and no insurance company will insure my corvette; they say you must be 25. My driving record is clean. It's a 1974 corvette nothing over the top 496 stroker engine, 13" Wilwoods all around, custom wide body etc. I found that Hagerty would insure someone under the age of 25 I called them told them what I have they said I am building a race car and would not be able to insure me. I am really confused about the whole thing. Are there no young people in this hobby or am just I out of luck. Any and all advice would be great.

why not just try State Farm or Allstate. I've had coverage with both of those companies insuring a old car...
|
state farm has insured me on everything from camaros to chevelles to bikes.. if you have a clean driving record you should be fine.. just expect to pay around 120+ a month until you turn 25... i now pay 40:thumbsup:
|
They will only give me market value for the car, not what it's actually worth. :(
|
Make sure you get an "Agreed value" policy, NOT "stated value"
I was able to insure my Chevelle when I was under 25, but no insurance company wanted to insure my Model T (seriously, my 20hp 40mph top-speed Model T is the one I couldn't get insurance on  ). The "regular" insurers said I needed collector insurance, and the collector insurers said they couldn't insure someone under 25. :willy: |
i did agreed value. make sure your actually telling them what the car is worth and not what you think its worth

We have had this problem for a few years with Michael and Project Prodigy and all our other family hot Rods. I have to insure Prodigy in my name until he is 25 Y/O. Geico (regular insurance) will only cover it for book value of $4200, needless to say we cover it for a couple more dollars then Geico's book value!
Michael is insured to drive all our regular cars and trucks on our standard Geico policy. According to our classic car insurance on our Hot Rods, he is not supposed to drive any of our Hot Rods under that insurance policy. In fact he had to sign a drive waiver saying he COULD NOT drive the cars because he still lives in the house. HOWEVER, there is a interesting angle here. Michael IS covered to drive anything in the shop under our shop insurance. Any car, customer car, truck / trailers, whatever. so.............................. I did however just hear something about Grundy taking 21 Y/Os, so in a few months when Prodigy is up for renewal, maybe Michael can insure it with Grundy |
In my experience with the non-specialty insurance companys, you've got to have a daily driver in order to put the higher agreed value "antique" insurance on that vette. Not sure about the under 25, but I don't doubt you'd have problems.... Best of luck-
|
that may be the case because my camaro isnt my primary on my policy.. just get a pile of crap honda for a couple hundred and make it your primary driver.. make the vet a secondary...:unibrow:

Car insurance
When I was 21 I had a 10 second street car with a cage. Yes my driving record was clean. I went through Condon and Skelly and it was $324 a year with full coverage and at $25000 value. I was a poor college kid at the time, but the price seemed to be very resonable. It did have a 2500 mile per year limit. Hope that helps.

I have been using Grundy for my pro touring camaro with an agreed value check em out

State Farm covered my 1970 Chevrolet 3/4 4x4. I bought it full restored and they asked me what kinda coverage I wanted. It went under a full coverage policy with an agree'ed $15,000 replacement value is it was delcared a total loss or stolen. The yearly poilicy was less than $380.
Last year the truck was stolen from my old shop. State Farm gave me a check for $14000 after my $1000 deductibe. I was suprised there was no issues after all the horror stories I had been told. My 1970 Camaro will go with Grundy or the like as it will be worth and appriase for alot more than that truck did. The specialty companies seem to have a better grasp on whet these types of cars are worth. |
The only way is liability man. I can't get an SS or Z28 since I am 16, but I can get insurance on my 80 S/E Trans am and it is the same price as my 95 V6 camaro or $400 more a year for both.
The thing is that it is a "Heavy Car" which is why they can insure that and not a new car. BUT I don't think I can get full coverage on it. So if you can live with liability, you CAN insure it. |
i just refuse to believe state farm wont cooperate! i would try a different state farm agent..

I'm 23 years old, and have had insurance on my 69 Camaro, registered through them as an SS, for 5 years now. The title and insurance is in my name, not my parents. I pay 130 bucks a year for full coverage w/ 1000 deductible, 4,000 miles/year limit(I think), and an agreed 35,000 value. It's never been a hassle for me. This is all with State Farm Insurance.

Email me, I'll see what I can do to help. You should be old enough to qualify for at least one program depending on a few other conditions. Stay away from a regular policy as they are just plain dangerous on a car like that. Collector auto along with Off-Track, HPDE & Wheel to Wheel are my specialties. [email protected]

2nd the motion on buying a cheap honda and listing it as ur primary and listing the camaro and vette as occasional drivers. I had a 91 z28 insured through state farm when i was 16, i was listed as the primary driver but it was on my parents policy. I was paying around $275 a month for insurance in dallas, tx. Now im paying $111 a month for full coverage on my 02 and im 24 with a clean driving record and a buttload of discounts, plus im married and a student lol. It depends on the agent and the state.

i have state farm on my chevelle and its a agreed value policy but its for a classic car and I only pay $20 a month. However they know I take it to the track and said they can't insure anything with a roll cage when I install one.

when I was 23, I had a 73 vette and went with state farm. it was expensive though
