I saw it over on PT, looks like a nice place to start. Over there you mentioned that you wanted to get it driving before the weekend. Before you take it out, make sure you go through a few things to ensure that the car is safe to be driven.

Check all of the suspension and steering joints for excessive play. A good shop manual will explain how to check them.

Look at all of the brake and fuel lines. Light rust is OK, heavy rust means you need to replace them before you go for a drive. Check the rubber lines as well. Cracking or peeling flex lines should be replaced. On the flexible brake lines, bend them near the fittings to see if they crack up. Nothing much worse than slamming the brakes and blowing out a flex line!

I love the 2nd Gen Trans Am. I drove a '79 for a while, a 403/auto car. One day I would like to build another, but totally custom.

Again, looks like a nice place to start, and with the judicious use of your local salvage yard you should be able to make a very nice car out of it for not a lot of money.

Shiny Side Up!

I dropped the tank today, cleaned out the gas, then checked the lines like you said. Everything was clean and even the rubber lines were in usable condition. I am going to replace them later when I have some black paint and go back under the car to touch it up.

This car is so rust free, it's weird. I think the drivers rear floor pan may need a patch, but not sure. Only thing rusty underneath is the rear end, leaf springs, and exhaust. Going to get some black paint and a sander then clean it all up.

So, goals so far. DRIVE THE CAR by THIS WEEKEND! Yeah, setting my goals high, but that's how you make progress.

By next weekend, have the car STREET LEGAL and drive it to Whataburger next Saturday for a number 11 with sausage.

My parents think it should be street ready by after summer, but as you can see, I am a little impatient.

Friend at work said to take it up to the shop next weekend and he can teach me how to do body work.

Painter said once the body work is done, take it back up on the weekend and he will paint it :).. Going to have to pay for supplies.

Cool car Trey! Ya might want to put something under those jackstands so the car doesn't tip them and flatten ya when you start wrestling around under it getting the surface rust off the rear etc.

As for "ideas" you'll have plenty of your own. My recommendation though, would be to just do one project at a time so you don't end up with a pro jackstand car. You'll enjoy it more if you can keep driving it rather than looking at it.

Y-TRY 04-08-2009 08:48 PM

I inexplicably find myself singing "I've got a long way to go and a short time to get there..."

Not sure if it's the Bandit reference or to the scope of your project. Either way- I'm digging it!

TreySmith 04-09-2009 01:41 PM

Yeah, high school budget, couldn't afford another project if I wanted to. I have $30 in my wallet :willy:

I got very lucky that I found such a solid and rare car that I liked.

Also, once this is on the road, the Camaro will be gone. Should have $2000+ to play with for rims, tires, and interior. Hopefully enough for a cam and a decent stereo also.

TreySmith 04-09-2009 07:51 PM

Changed the oil and spark plugs today, $35.

Oh and incase your wondering what the stuff is on the ground.. uh.. I spilled my soda..:_paranoid

I don't see any jack stands under it... I assume you were using them while you were under the car. I wouldn't want that oi.. erm.. I mean soda spot to be blood from your crushed skull!!!

WS6 car, huh? Nice!
It looks to be in very good shape. Nice find.
When it comes time for rims, don't forget Year One has 17x9 snowflakes.
I think that would look killer in black w/ a polished black-centered snowflakes.
If you go w/ black and gold, the gol trimmed snowflakes look REALLY nice too.

Yeah there were jack stands under it, my auto tech teacher was telling me about one kid that got injured because he was using a cheap jack without jack stands. The jack started to drop but he managed to roll himself out in time but still cut up his hand on the frame rail or something. So I started using them after that.

And yes, 17in snow flame rims  Is there any pics of these on a car?

Going to get it started today, video up later :) First run in 5 years.

PonchoJohn 04-10-2009 11:06 AM

There's a whole mess of pix... go to www.transamcountry.com or www.performanceyears.com or even p-t. com
They do look nice!

TreySmith 04-10-2009 12:00 PM

Thanks man! I love the BRE rims but they are too much, so 17in Snow Flakes are the way to go, would like to see what 17 or 18 inch TT2's would look like, but I want to keep it fairly stock looking.

I tried to start the car today, and about an inch or two of gas shot up out of the carburetor. I already bought a rebuild kit so my stepdad and I are going to work on it when he gets home. Hopefully she will run today.
Going to flush the brake lines tomorrow and then the Camaro is probably going to be sold :(

Also, putting up a pic of a car with 17inchers. Definitely a win, but the car looks like it needs to be lowered a little.

Well, wasn't getting spark so it wouldn't start. Going to look at it tomorrow and see whats going on.

TreySmith 04-12-2009 07:15 PM

Car runs now!! Bleeding the brakes tomorrow. Needs 1 rotor and brake pads for sure.

brans72 04-12-2009 07:31 PM

Why not install a pair of rotors??? Iundertand your on a budget there Trey but I have never just installed 1 rotor. Just my .02

TreySmith 04-12-2009 07:38 PM

When the camaro is gone I will. But right now I am just trying to get the necessities down so I can get the T/A on the road  Don't worry, most of the crap is going to be restored or replaced at one point.

The brakes right now are hands down the worst part of the car, and it all needs to go during summer.

But once we bleed the brakes tomorrow I am going to take it around the block. 1/8th of a mile shouldn't hurt much.

TreySmith 04-21-2009 07:34 PM

Got the front brakes done and had some fun with it. Put new rotors, calipers, pads and a master cylinder on the front. Going to need two weeks of cash to get the rear brakes done. Going to get calipers, pads and rotors for both sides ;).

Total into the car is $265

I watched the burnout videos, I can't wait to toast the tires on my own now!
You have a pretty cool car. Keep us posted on the progress please.

I bet you could get that paint to shine up. Claybar and some wax would do alot.

Yeah, I would at least try it, would make it look way better until it gets the full treatment. :)

Glad you got it back on the road though.

TreySmith 05-11-2009 05:52 PM

Yeah, I am going to cut, buff and maybe wax it next weekend. I need to learn how for my job so why not?

It's a pretty slick looking car even with 29 year old paint.

I am taking it to the shop tomorrow to have the control arms done, it will be the first time I really take it out. Wish me luck! :_paranoid  :D

Another update. I stripped alot of the areas that need bondo. I still need to do the hood and maybe the drivers fender, I might need to get a new fender which is why I didn't finish it. I also need a new trunk lid which is why I didn't take the spoiler off. Anyways I am going to pay my friend there $400 or so to straighten the car out with bondo and prime it. Then it will be ready for paint!

Trey,
What happened to this thought? I'm not coming down on you, just speaking from experience...
Unless you have the cash/time/money/money to do a paint job, it's usually best to wait until you can afford it. The guys who posted about trying to keep the paint know this also. I have made this mistake MANY times- I took body & fender in college (I was gonna open a resto shop), so I half-azzed know what I'm doing, and I still wish I had left some cars in OEM paint until I was TRUELY ready to paint.
I hope this is not the case w/ you. I hope you are gonna hit it- hot and heavy- and have your T/A ready for paint. I'd hate to see you get discouraged on your project.
Again- not coming down on you, just passing on some hard earned lessons.
Good luck- hope to see more updates!

I couldn't get it to pass inspection plus it is just way to hot outside to be a daily driver without A/C, I figured it would just be better to leave it there and work on it.

I started to strip the car down Monday morning. The 100+ temperatures make me sick to my stomach and I just couldn't work on it any more. I work from 8:00-2:00 and 12:00-6:00 depending on what day it is, by 2:00 it is hot and I am ready to go home. I finally manned up and came into work early at 8:00 and spent four hours on it when it was cool. By 3:45 I couldn't stand it any longer and left early, I was about to die from the heat. By the way I sweep, clean and also detail the cars as in wet sanding, buffing, washing etc.

So I am just paying my friend to do most of it. He is going to do the whole car in a day or so as in fix ALL the dents, fully straighten the driver door and then I am going to prime the car. I am going to strip the hood myself also and he is going to teach me a little body work. My other friend already helped me pop out the big dent in the passenger sail panel and we got most of the roof dent out.

He is only going to charge $400 or so. That is a good price to have it done right. Then the painter is going to paint it for me for like $500, we still aren't set on the price. I am going to pay him off for it since I want the paint to sit a few weeks and dry.

I will have $400 after I get paid tomorrow, so the bodywork will be paid off atleast.

I mean, I CAN do it and want to do it, but I can't work on the car and still do my job at the same time. My body just physically can't stand the heat.

So don't worry man, it WILL get done and I still love the car to death. I am going to do all I can do on the car, but there is things I don't know how to do which is why I am paying my friend.

"I've got a long way to go and a short time to get there..."

Also here is what color black I am probably going with. It will be single stage since that is all I can afford right now and I want it done as soon as possible. The painter said the difference between single stage and BC/CC isn't enough to justify the cost.

I took this car all the way, I wet sanded, buffed and waxed. Sure does shine! Wish I had some pictures in the sunlight.

PonchoJohn 06-19-2009 09:28 AM

That's good to hear.
It's better to pay someone to do the job for you, and have it completed, than it is to let it languish. Nothing wrong w/ other people doing work for you while you earn money for your project.
I totally get the heat/work/stuff coming up aspect- that's why I wrote my other comment. It happened to me when I was in my late teens- I was taking autobody at college and lost my job. I decided to finish my project (hard decision w/ no money). I sold that project to fund my Trans Am rebuild. Fortunately, I soon had another job and was able to finish the T/A (in similar circumstances- early summer and 100*+ days!!). Things happen, then you have to figure out how to correct them. It sounds like you have things on track!
Hope to see some update pix soon.

PonchoJohn 06-19-2009 09:29 AM

BTW- the Mustang's paint looks very nice! Now I know what to expect on your car

TreySmith 06-21-2009 09:33 PM

I will bring my camera tomorrow to work incase he starts on it. I am ready for it to be finished already lol. I want to drive it, I should have taken it home Friday.

Anyone have any info on how to build a turbocharged pontiac 400? I want to keep the theme going :D

PonchoJohn 06-22-2009 12:37 PM

Go to www.performanceyears.com and do some searches. There are several people who have built turbo Poncho motors. The 2nd gen seems to be the most popular platform for them- although there is this 67 GTO that's OHHH SOOO NICE!!

TreySmith 06-22-2009 08:34 PM

Cool thanks.

I guess I am doing the body work now lol, my friend says he has too much work and can't mess with mine. I need to pick up a drivers side fender now. Man parts are hard to find! The fender is just full of bondo and rusted out at the bottom. Atleast now I am saving a ton of cash. $300 is new carpet and floor pans so I am happy.

TreySmith 06-23-2009 04:52 PM

Got the sail panel mostly done, took 10 minutes lol. My friend was trying to teach me how to do bondo.

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/6377/imgp1358s.jpg
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/1382/imgp1360f.jpg

TreySmith 06-26-2009 07:45 PM

The car is coming along nicely. It got caught out in the rain and I had to deal with a customer so I couldn't get it primed in time, but it didn't rust bad at all, just turned kinda yellow in some spots. I decided to go with BC/CC since it wont cost that much more. It will be $500 to paint it either way, so I just have to pay the extra for supplies. So I guess it will be House Of Kolor BC-25 black, the baddest of the black. The total I am looking at for bodywork and paint is $1200 or so.. Not too bad

NOT A TA 06-26-2009 10:12 PM

Looks like its coming along Trey! Might want to tape off the rear window trim and T top when doing the bodywork just in case you slip with a tool. (this comes from a guy with DA scratch marks in his rear window)

TreySmith 06-26-2009 10:33 PM

Too late :( Lol.. You may be able to buff out a little bit of the scratch. My friends dad got hit by a motorcycle and he left alot of scratches on his drivers window and this guy at work got most of it out, not sure if it was paint though.

The trim has a little bit of a scratch but the windows are fine. The tabs that hold the t-tops in are broken so I think I need new t-top trim anyways. I just nicked it a little, no would would ever notice the scratch.

awr68 06-27-2009 07:26 AM

Listen to John....protect everything all the way threw this process!
I would do it in single stage black....it looks better than bc/cc (black that is). This will give it a cleaner and deeper look to the finish.

TreySmith 06-27-2009 11:46 AM

I don't know, all of the spot jobs we do are BC/CC, and they look nice. Most of the single stage jobs look dull. The mustang looked great but alot that have been coming through lately just look cheap.

SteveMcqueenRules 06-28-2009 02:51 PM

You can sand single stage paint and make it as shiny as you want. The only reason cars have clearcoat is to protect the paint.

TreySmith 07-01-2009 09:07 PM

The body work is pretty much done. I handed my friend $350 and he went at it. He started at 2:00 when I got off work and I took the flares, mirrors etc.. off and helped him do a few small things. It only took him four hours which was amazing.
All we need to do is sandblast a few areas, strip the hood bird and pinstripes off, clean up some edges and then prime it. I was going to have it painted next week but Fbodywarehouse is having a sale on weather stripping so I think I might get that first and save some money.

NOT A TA 07-01-2009 09:47 PM

Having had a few black cars and a couple of them BC/CC I have to agree with Anthony and recommend a good single stage like the higher end PPG or something similar. Wet sanded and buffed out it looks a mile deep and you can fix chips etc easier without being able to see them when they're fixed. I don't think I've ever seen a BC/CC black car that compares to a well done single stage.

Another thing is that black cars need more maintenance and your car is a daily driver, soooo you're going to need to keep hand buffing it out to get rid of the swirl marks. Since you can't see as well how much clear you're laying on (or sanding off) you're more likely to buff through it later on down the road if you keep the car.

I may get flamed for this but.... as the owner of 3 vehicles with peeling clearcoats on regularly driven or outside kept vehicles that have been repainted (all by different professional body shops, not me) and now need to be repainted again because of it. If it doesn't have a clear coat the clear can't peel.
