Schwartz project "Temptress"
1 Attachment(s)
It's a 1965 Pontiac Tempest.
Body parts came in yesterday for project "Temptress". Our chassis is the new series 3 A body chassis with mandrel bent rails. Yes, it will be powered by a Schwartz built LS engine. We unloaded an LS3 and an LS7 off a truck yesterday, which one will we use? Turbo, SC, NA, decisions, decisions. This autocross/track weapon will debut on Power Tour 09 and be driven by Aussie Grant Craft and Jeff Schwartz. EDIT: The car has been on the road for a while now. You may have seen it at events across the US. If not, here are some videos!!! GoPro POV videos: http://youtu.be/HCQOFkB8-eU http://youtu.be/W_VHveTmR14 On the track: http://youtu.be/ZcF-ZZbEcdE?hd=1 http://youtu.be/cbTTufOFhjE http://youtu.be/iWU_5DGMe04 |
Jeff any renderings yet:question: This is one of my favorite Pontiacs. Can't wait to see this come together...
|
Sweet, it looks like the body is in pretty good shape! Why not build a Poncho motor to put in the Poncho? LS motors are great from a performance standpoint, but even my grandmother has one. Well, the customer is always right if this is a customer car.

Jeff-
I heard a rumor that you were no longer associated with Schwartz Performance. It looks like the rumors are untrue? Geno |

A 'Wide-Track Excitement' dealer.
Operators standing by... Awesome combo of 1965 meets 2009! |
I saw the new 3rd generation frame today. It's beefy as hell and should make this car a real autocross and road course killer.
The metal work is getting done right now. New floors in the trunk and the cabin. Plus the 'slight' mini-tub looks like GM did it! He's hoping to get it done for Power Tour, so it's all hands on deck at this point. Thank God it's not getting 'painted' I'm sure this makes the stress easier to handle. |

Wheels need to be proper steel Bassets though IMHO. |
I think he has a set of steelies if needed.
I need to stop by at the shop and see how this thing is progressing. Maybe we can follow Jeff and his crew to Madison for the 1st stop of Power Tour. |

Are you still planning on Power Tour with this car? It looks like it's gonna be a mad thrash to get it done in 3 + weeks!!!
|
He sure is....the body is done, chassis is nearly back together and should be on the chassis in a couple of days.
Ive got my bags packed and ready to go! |
Jeff-
Your latest project is looking pretty good. It is going to be a mad thrash to finish it by the Power Tour. I won't be able to make it with the Camaro because I won't have time to finish my few outstanding items. I was wondering if you could answer a couple questions about the chassis I purchased from you. Do you have a picture and part number of the center section seals you are using these days in the 9" rear ends? Have you had any problems with them leaking? What angle should the upper trailing arms on the rear axle be relative to horizontal? Mine seem to be at a relatively steep angle at normal ride height. Consequently, upward deflections in the rear axle cause the yoke to rotate down. Is this a problem? Thanks in advance for the response. |
PM sent.

Sooo.. which one of you 2 will be driving? 'Cause I know NOTHING scares Jeff. Well, other than being single and out on the town partying with you!!
I have heard some stories..... :) |
My brother is flying up from OZ and Im flying over from Hong Kong and we're drivin' the Temptress. Jeff's taking the Ultima and Dale is taking his Transam.
|
I was planning on following you guys out of McHenry County and do the Madison to Racine leg.
There's no way I can get my t-5 trans quieted down in time ( I think) Plus, we haven't made any hotel reservations. Hopefully Dale put in a larger oil cooler on the T/A. It runs hot at speed, he didn't have an O/D trans when we went to the Summer Nats 2 yrs ago. |
Now that's bad ass right there!! Nice work Jeff!!
|
Its a hardcore ride. No soundproofing or trim at all, the only interior it has is seats. Lexan side windows, fibreglass bumpers etc....
My brother and I flew over a week before PT and were thrashing on it with the Schwartz guys. Just "finished" it on Sunday morning and took off to Racine.... basically the Power Tour was the shakedown for the car. Came back with a list if things to fix. He took the car back to the shop Sunday night and I drove his Ultima from Racine to South Bend.... I used to think my 600hp Ultima was fast.... his is xxxxing insane! I think the Twin Turbo bug has bitten... The Ultima has a Magnacharged LS2 so I now need to decide if the Ultima gets the TT and the Tempest gets the Magnacharged LS2... or the Ultima keeps the LS2 and the Tempest gets a TT. Im kinda thinking the Tempest with TT would be a blast. Stay tuned folks. |
Turbos on the Tempest would be waaaaayyyy easier. Plus, if you drove Jeff's car, you realize how hard it is to put the power down with such a light car.
With over 1000hp, the Pontiac would still corner well and the wheelbase and weight would help keep the tires from shredding every time you sneeze. I have to get a ride in the Tempest, next time I visit. :) Too bad the trans in my car was wasted, I really wanted to drive the 1st legs with you all. |
I like the subtle engine bay and the red on the car looks great.
|
Temptress got an engine swap after power tour. It's now a dry sump LS9 based block. I think Jeff used a LS7 clutch this time. Anyway, it's up at the Car Craft Summer Nationals and so far is in 1st place in the pre-81 class for real-street eliminator. I'm sure he'll post with more details later, way to go dude!!

Car Craft with RSE article came this week. Nice.
Both Schwartz cars, 1982 Trans Am and 1965 Tempest beat a modded LPE 2008 ZO6, with wing, suspension mods, etc. in the AX. |
Look for this car in an upcoming Tremec ad.
