Mark Stielow's 69 Camaro, Red Devil

I was reading the thread for Charlie's Jackass project and he mentioned Mark was working on a new project "Blue Bomber" does anyone have any pic's???

Ummgawa 05-15-2009 09:53 AM

I think that Camaro "X" is being painted blue. Been wrong alot today, but I think thats the extent of it.

Once I finish JA for Charley I'll get back to working on my new project. It is another '69 wth the following:

LS7 with small cam 575 HP
T56
DSE front clip
DSE rear susp
Brembo brakes
ABS brakes
Currie Ford 9 inch

I really like Camaro X and the way it drove so I'm using an LS7 again. (Charleys LS9 drives even better...) But the LS7 was more price friendly.

Car has all the metal work done. All the driveline in it. All the Chassis done.

Is that a Taurus fan your using?

I know, I know... of all the questions to ask on a Stielow build but that s precisely the reason to ask. I figured you would go with something a little higher end.

tones2SS 05-15-2009 11:46 AM

WOW!!!
I can't wait to see updates on this bad boy as well. You have some really nice cars Mark. And good taste!!

Enough with the 1st Gens. I would love to see what you would do with a 2nd Gen car. No offense to the 1st Gen guys, but I'm kinda worn out of those.

The fan and radiator are out of the Red Witch. The fan is a 1998 Lincoln Mark 8 fan. Works great. I'm trying to stay on a budget with this car due to things at GM..

I would do a second Gen sometime if I could find a good deal on a body. I just really like '69s

Mark

fleetus macmullitz 05-15-2009 12:35 PM

Mark, what will you do differently on this car compared to the 'X' car ?

Rybar 05-15-2009 01:21 PM

Absolutley love all your builds Mark, said it many times before Thrasher was a huge inspiration for my build.

Can't wait to see this one complete, is the rear going to be tubbed with some nice dish on the wheels like the Mule? What wheels are you going to run?

All that I will say is that the artist chooses the medium that best fills his needs/wants/desires/tastes.

Besides, I don't think that anyone ever said "Hey, Michelangelo...enough with the chapel ceiling stuff...I want you to paint my house" or "Hey Bach...grab that kazoo and let's see what you can really do"

Mark,

Where did the radiator come from (brand or model)? The fan and radiator look like they were made for each other.

Bryce 05-15-2009 02:40 PM

was that an australian cattle dog in the first pic?

thedude327 05-15-2009 04:28 PM

Nothing wrong with sticking with one particular year camaro. After the first one, it's faster to build a second car as you've learned all of the tricky things that can hold up the build. Will this be at the camaro superfest in July?

Paul

Stielow 05-15-2009 04:54 PM

Ginger is my garage buddy. She is a cattle dog.

WHEN? -when they run out of 69s that he hasn't built yet and that's not many - what do you think Mark maybe 20-30 remain? wish he'd build mine

Stielow 05-15-2009 05:11 PM

The radiator is a Griffin from 1996 out of Red Witch.

The car has DSE mini tubs and DSE 4 link.

My plan for this '69 is kinda a Porsche 911 deal. Just keep evolving it. Porsche kept the same car for years and just kept tweeking it.

I have liked many aspects of all the cars I built. They all were a learning experience. I saw the Thrasher again last winter and thought the car still looked great. So I want to do another red one.

Fikse is making me some wheels right now with a new design (very cool). Those guys are great and I have worked with them since 1994.

Just having some fun building another car and digging some old parts out of the attic.

If people would quit making new parts for the 69 Camaro, you would have perfected by now I think. They have all been an evolution of the next, better every time. Are you going to use the same type engine harness used in jackass? What I would like to know is who did the harness because I love the idea of the cannon plug in the firewall.

GregWeld 05-15-2009 06:44 PM

Charley --- I sold Bob a very very clean 69 drop top 307 - 3 speed column car that was this same turquoise... YOU KNOW YOU NEED A DROP TOP CAMARO to round out "the shed"!!! LOL

I agree with Mark - There is just something about a nice 69 Camaro that is hard to beat. If you can keep building them and making them better and better... why not!

WSSix 05-15-2009 07:15 PM

Well, you answered my questions Mark. Granted I haven't driven any of them but they all looked so amazing and built with such precision that I had always wondered why build another. I know building them has to be part of the fun as well. So what is different about this one compared the X since you say you really liked that one.

Thanks

Stielow 05-15-2009 08:06 PM

After working on Camaro X I did not like the not being able to use the stock oil pan with a stock front clip. I liked the way Jackass was going togther so I copied a lot off that car.

I really like the way the engine bay is turning out on my new car.

http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/q...5/DSC_2252.jpg

The Vintage Air front runner looks great. The headers fit well and the induction tube and rad turned out very well.

BonzoHansen 05-15-2009 08:27 PM

No, don't build a 2nd gen. We don't need the bar set even higher, lol.

What brake booster is that?

The Vintage Air LS frontrunner in black was one of my winter changes too; I was very impressed with the quality and look, great setup.

Who could get sick of building 69 Camaros? I really like the fine tuning phase. It's so rewarding. I can only imagine how much better every car turns out. All the bugs you have fixed on the previous cars don't exist. Sounds like fun to me. I'm not ready for number 2 but I've learned more than I expected.

7TSS 05-15-2009 09:28 PM

Mark, what are you using for motor mount adapters, headers and transmission crossmember? Are they made by DSE?

I have the DSE subframe and was wondering which headers would work with the ATS mounts and T56 crossmember.

The headers are Kooks for a 1st Gen. I had them sent to me unwelded and added the SPD 1 7/8 round tube header flanges. You can try just buying them welded and see how they fit. (Retail they are ~$900) The Kooks headers came with engine mounts which work perfect. Much better than the ATS ones. I pull the stock engine mount stands off my original sub frame and they bolted right on the DSE frame. I bolted the Kooks adaptors on my LS7 and got some stock '69 rubber engine mounts and it all bolted right up. (I was shocked!)

To get the headers to fit like I wanted I only had to cut the some of the tube to length. I had Stenode weld them up and the welds are artwork. I ordered bends from Borla, Corsa and Woolf to make the rest of the exhaust with Borla Mufflers. Most of the S/S was left over from old projects. Woolf is a great source for bends if you need tight bends and don't want to spend the big money on Burns.

I good source for S/S V-band clamps is Summit Racing Dynatech brand. Again they are about half the price of Burns and work fine and may be the same stuff.

While I'm ranting about exhaust the best Hot Rod exhaust hangers are from Stainless Works. There not cheap but they are very good. My rule of thumb from racing '69 Camaro's on One Lap of America is the exhaust system should be able to support you full body weight! I weight 190 lb and I can do chin up on my systems.

The trans cross menber is an ATS part. Works fine if you use the stock height sub-frame mounts. Or you can just make one.

I love the package. The DSE clip allows the stock LS7 oil pan. The Vintage Air front runner looks very OE and fits. I can even get the header on and off the car from the top of the engine. This my not sound like a big deal but it is very nice to be able to work on the car with out taking it half apart.

My only complaint was we had to trim the rad support mount .200" to get the front sheet metal to fit with the DSE front clip. Not sure which one was off and it was a quick deal. But the DSE clip came assembled, powdered coat and I just bolted it in.

Oh well off to meet a Jackass... well work on Charleys car.

Well a lot depends on if GM is still a "going concern". I would like to have it with JA at SEMA. But it is not a big deal. When I was driving JA last weekend I really wanted to get my car done.

I'll see how it goes after June 1.

Great build Mark, I think its SS, Which should stand for "Stielow Simple"

I think everyone can learn from his builds simple can be your friend, along with "Attention To Detail"

Thanks for the response. I'll definitely look into the Kook's and VA Frontrunner setups. I appreciate the tips on the exhaust too.

Your cars have always been nicely packaged and well thought out. :hail:
