Car shows..love em, hate em

I am mostly a lurker, but thought I would share because I am tired of the “no respect” some people have at car shows. Many of the people at car shows, none of the car owners, deserve to be beaten. I went to a local car show yesterday with eleven friends who had cars in the show. Of the eleven, here is what three of us had the joy to experience.

1) guys wife walks down to their car and some guy is half sitting on the car, half his arse on the rear of the car, one leg up, having a conversation with his buddy about the car.

2) another guy sitting at his car, guy walks up with his 120lb dog and takes a look inside the car to check out the interior, his dog decides he is going to have a look as well, jumps right up on the side of the car with both front paws on the door.

3) end of the day I am feely I can finally take a deep breath, have a walk around to check out some rides, and return to this………..nice chip at the rear. Painted for three years, always drive it, and this is the first “real one”

Hopefully I got the link right.

This is why I probably wont go to many shows...

Your right people have no respect for other people’s property. It doesn’t matter if your setting right there it will still happen and it still pisses you off. If you’re like me I love to go to car shows but I will also set there for most of the day giving anyone that gets too close the old stink eye and for the most part it works. You really have to watch out for the people that don’t know how to control there kids! In fact I had one kid throw a pop can close to my car and he got pop all over my car. I did walk away with the Best Camaro Award so it wasn’t all bad I guess. Anyway you’ve got to love car shows but you have to take the good with the bad.

Car shows pretty much suck....I like talking to the folks with cars but that's the end of it for me. I'd much rather be driving or racing.

face it people are stupid!!!!!
and why do we feel that we cant just say Hey Dick ( i don't know if that is really his name) what is wrong with you ????

I hate car shows!! but you gotta go. i like the BS time with buddies but the spectators are idiots!

TreySmith 05-17-2009 03:12 PM

I just went to my first "real" show last Friday. It was a small show but everyone was real nice, respectful and kept a little bit of breathing room between cars. I even over heard a few parents telling their kids not to touch or get too close.

I guess it just depends on the size of the show but I think most people at this one had some classic of their own and knew to respect someone elses car as well as they would their own.

You said it all.........worst part is I started the build in 02 just got it done, not that they ever are, but just redid the motor, as I felt it was the last remaining piece. Woke up on Saturday and told the wife, " it is finally done" other than moving on to another car.......and then this....

JamesJ 05-17-2009 03:52 PM

Most of the show type things we go to are more of events, if you dont have a car you dont show up. There are always some that dont but its mostly becasue there car is broke or somethign like that so they are just crusise there daily deriver..

tones2SS 05-17-2009 04:25 PM

Sorry about your car

Blake. You are ABSOLUTELY correct.
It comes down to 2 things; disrespect and ignorance. It's too bad, because it ruins the whole day.
And, I do/would say something like, "Hey dude, is this your car?!? No, oh,...then get the f@#* off!!!
Sorry had to vent.
Sorry about your car. That ticks me off.

almcbri 05-17-2009 04:29 PM

I understand your thoughts, but remember there are a lot of spectators at the car shows that know not to touch and to respect the car and the owner. I go to every car show in my area and have never touched a car and really enjoy looking at all the different rides and talking with people.

Since my car isn't finished yet, I am a spectator.

I get it though, for some reason people always want to touch the cars and that I don't understand! When I get my car done, I may just have to tie some ropes around my car to keep people away. :D

Ive done many car shows. Ive learned a lot over the years.
A lot of shows the winner is picked before the show starts, if you know what Im saying. For that ONE reason I dont waste my time.

LOL. A local show here this weekend awarded 2 trophies to 2 cars which just happened to belong to one of the primary event sponsors. In fact, that particular person usually gets at least one trophy at any given show he puts a car in when he also sponsors.

I was only there to hang out with friends and didn't care but it ruffled a lot of feathers because they were not the nicest cars in their respective categories.

I don't go to shows because I like the show "scene"-- friends and I go just to hang out with each other (and/or significant others), get lunch or dinner, look at a few other cars, then take off and go cruise around. Going to shows for the sake of only showing isn't something I much care for. I'd rather be driving.

CamaroPat 05-17-2009 10:10 PM

I've never owned anything show-quality. I've never really considered the owner's perspective before. I guess I just always assumed that people knew to keep the h&%$ away from OTHER people's cars. I attended as many shows as I could get my Dad to take me to when I was younger and I never touched a thing. I guess I'm not crazy to be happy with a nice driver, I get to enjoy it, not have a cardiac arrest when my 2 year old gets in and car guys appreciate it, but droves of people don't feel the need to hover around it.

chr2002ca 05-17-2009 11:36 PM

The car shows are definitely a love/hate deal. For every d_ckhead or d_ckhead's kids that don't show any respect for your car, there are a very large number that do and there a lot of great opportunities to meet some great people and make some friends. I think some car shows definitely have better crowds than others. Some car owners I have chatted with at shows have been nice enough to advise me to avoid certain other shows because of the higher potential for 'bad experiences', so I don't even go to those. Reading the previous posts in this thread, if I had a guy's huge dog get up on my car, or somebody took a fairly large chunk of paint off, I'd probably draw a bit of attention with my reaction and it would be very unpleasant for both parties. I definitely keep a sharp eye out when I see kids, cameras dangling from straps, big belt buckles, drunks, and non-car chicks with lots of jewelry.

I agree with Todd's response, I'd rather be driving or racing.

A friend has his 4th Gen TA at a show; nice car a few mods done. He finishes talking with someone and turns around to see some kid jumping up and down in the drivers seat of the car; mother is just standing there not giving a **** about anything.

He about comes unglued (he has kids of his own); another friend that was working security happens to walk up at the same time and asked the lady to remove her child out of the car.

Her response is "Why? He is enjoying himself".

The security friend responds back that the owner is about to blow a fuse that you are allowing you child to do this and he has put a lot of time in keeping his everything in excellent condition.

Her response "It is just a car not like they are worth anything; you guys are just wasting your money for nothing"

The same could be said about her and any man that's ever taken her out to dinner. I wonder what she'd say if someone took a hammer to her BMW parked out in the parking lot.

BonzoHansen 05-18-2009 09:45 AM

Wow, I've never seen anything like the dog story or that kid story.

I don’t go to a lot of car shows. The occasional cruise night, a handful of local car shows if they benefit a good cause, and the Carlisle GM Nats, basically to meet up with NastyZ guys from all over. I have seen leaners, little kids hands, and so forth. My kids get slapped by me if they touch.

Some people are asses. But we usually have fun so it is what it is.

cencal69 05-18-2009 12:59 PM

I used to love going to car shows as a kid. Now I look at all the pretty cars with chrome headers that have no blue on them and want to puke. Cars that are trailer queens get zero respect from me. Drive the damn thing. This site has put things in perspective.

buickfunnycar.com 05-18-2009 01:32 PM

Love going to shows...so long as my car(s) are safely parked at home.
Last Pleasanton show my buddy had a nice chip on the fender of his pristine Garnet Red X33,we figured out it was probably caused by a belt buckle or a heavy swinging necklace of some kind.
Nice,huh...?

BBC71Nova 05-18-2009 01:43 PM

 I'm a hater.

I've always felt car shows were love it or hate it. I enjoy going through and seeing other rides, getting ideas, checking out craftsmanship, etc. I just don't enjoy sitting out in ridiculous heat/humidity tied to my car watching to make sure some a$$ clown doesn't take it upon himself to hop on over into the car and treat it like the pony ride in Wally World. Too many people in this world have no respect for anyone else's belongings anymore. Same reason cars get beat all to pieces in parking lots these days. Another discussion altogether...

89 RS 05-18-2009 08:12 PM

I think I've agreed with almost every post with regards to car shows. I usually go to the local cruise-ins and the only show I go to is the Fred Gibbs Memorial car show in Le Harpe, IL. The reason I go to that show is because I'm originally from the area, good road trip, and it's geared toward all Camaros. My dad also takes his car there so we get to hang out and talk with other car guys. I was at a cruise-in last year and some lady dropped a freakin' big gulp by a car spraying the side of the car with pop, then just laughed about. Lack of respect and no appreciation for the work that goes into our cars. My .02

70rs 05-18-2009 08:57 PM

I have been to a lot of shows and it's not too often I see something as bad as described in a few of these posts. I have alwys been a spectator but being "a car guy" I just know to keep my hands and my kids hands away from everything. I did see one time though a guy trying to figure out how to open the hood on a 68 Camaro. He even went as far as gitting in the car to look for the hood release. He only asked how to do it after he got out, and the guy he asked said "It's not my car, what the hell are you doing in it?"
I guess when mine is done I'll just drive it.

steemin 05-18-2009 10:01 PM

I have never had any of my cars in a car show.
To much risk and a hassle.
I prefer cruise -ins or just taking my cars out on a nice day.

Scott
