what car to build around this engine?
hey guys,
i've been on here for a while, but haven't really posted up. but now i need your opinion. i have a 2008 dodge viper motor that is getting fully built and having a couple turbos put on. it was originally going to go into a customers 2007 dodge charger (see pic below), but now that customer wants to put it in a classic mopar.:D so the options are as follows. 1) put it in the 07 charger w/ solid axle rear end a and full cage. 2) get a new 09 challenger and gut it to build a race car (again, solid axle and full cage) 3) put it in a '68ish charger, full tube chassis and all the goodies. 4) put it in a '68 road runner or gtx, again, full chassis etc. our shop does mainly late model dodge vehicles, so we are kinda leaning towards the 09 challenger, but i also think a gtx would be wicked if done right, plus you never see those with a pro touring style. so....thoughts? oh yeah, power output should be about 1500rwhp at around 16psi. thanks in advance for the input, you guys have some incredible projects here. also, not sure if this is kosher here but our website is http://www.stackperformance.com, so feel free to check it out or stop by if you're in the area. |
here is a picture of the 07 charger we would use.

OR A 1970 CHALLENGER:unibrow:

Welcome novahollic!!!
Nice looking Charger there. Love the color and the wheels. Oh, the power plant ain't too shabby neither!! lol:wow: I voted for a 68/69 Charger. I know you guys are into the late model mopars, but I've seen a 69 pro-tour Charger and it looks KILLER done right and it looks like you guys would do it right. GOOD LUCK on your choice and keep us posted. I just stopped by your website and was impressed. Some nice rides on there. Shop looks really nice, classy and clean. (Are you guys on dodgetalk.com as well? I am a member there as I have a Dodge Ram Daytona as my daily driver. Good website.) |
I'd go with the Plymouth GTX, I love that platform, it looks really badass, and imagine it with a V10 TT under it's hood, that would scare the living sh!t out of any other car, but that's me, I want to see the build when you start guys...
GTX FTW! |

we are not on dodgetalk, but we are on srtconnection.com, challengertalk.com and a few others. that daytona platform can be pretty fun, ive seen a few with blowers on them that kicked some ass. anyways, right now we're probably looking at doing either a '68 charger, or road runner. once we get a car and get crackin ill be sure to start a build thread. edit: just saw i have a whole 3 posts since i joined the site in 07....thats just sad.... |

also, i thought i would add that the wheels on the charger are our own wheel we have made, so we can make them in any size or color combo. just a fyi. |
well, there's always a way to modify the tubs in a GTX... I don't know, there's someting about the GTX that makes it so cool to mod, or even restore, its shape it's just sexy as hell... and it would be uniqe that's for sure... that's why its my vote
|
Yeah, a Roadrunner or GTX. I love 70's, I voted for the Charger on accident lol.
|
Any of the old iron would be cool. But I voted Charger.

I wouldn't mind owning a SRT 8 Jeep!! AWD and some balls to back it up. I saw some on your website that absolutely KILLED!! Like the murdered out one. VERY NICE! Please post pics of the build when you guys start. :lateral:  |
a Viper motor in a late model would get a little attention, say at like SEMA- BUT if you put a that around classic sheet metal- it would have way more impact
|
If you're going with a new Challenger why not try to get a body in white ? Then you can go full custom in & out without tossing a lot of stuff....

I thought that you would only haveto pass the emmissions for the car not the motor in it. I could be wrong
|
i'll have to look into it a bit, but here in california, they dont really like you doing anything to your car that make it more fun. i think the only way to really do a legal engine swap it to replace it with a newer engine that was available in the car its going in. but i could be wrong.
anyways, if we go old school, it wont be as much of a problem. we should have an idea next week what kind of car were gonna use, then its just a matter of finding one.... |

NED is in California -- has a killer project... :>) NEEDS A KILLER MOTOR!!! GO NED!! |

Neither of those are a real problem. Kit car type VIN and in Florida we can pretty much drive what we want ie: race cars with plates posing as "pro streeters" :unibrow: :D |
I vote for the GTX. That would be badass
|
well, the verdict is in. it looks like our customer has similar taste as you guys here, and has decided on a 69 roadrunner. now we just gotta find one in decent shape....anyone?
|
A good website is cars-on-line.com or hemmings.com
Good luck and keep us posted. |
charger or gtx are both awesome options... with the newer car you're just gonna have a b!tch of a time getting an illegal smog check, and dealing with stupid stuff all day. would make a ton more sense to put it in an old car.
and on top of that, the classics never go out of style. |
my vote would be to do a pro touring 09 charger, like one lap or penny... clean and no BS, and not a part on the car that didnt serve a purpose. With the TT viper engine let the cars performance speak for itself.. im sure it would knock on the 250 mph barrier at bonneville or do 200 at the texas mile if you built it light enough and the grip was there...
And honestly, screw what turns heads at sema... show up with the salt still on the doors, smelling of 116 octane and a timeslip that said 250+mph.. |

I say mid 50's mopar like a 55 plymouth look what troy did with the 53 savoy "sniper" awhile back!
|
well things have started progressing on the project, and if you guys like, i can get a build thread going.

as of right now, the car is completly gutted and we are starting the fab work on the cage and suspension. once i get some pictures loaded up, i'll start a build thread to show you guys the progress. |
Here's some pics of a GTX with viper engine, this is on our Schwartz chassis. We did this one for Hennessy.
