Newbie w/ a G-body

Hi guys. I been lurking on this site for a long time and decided to sign up and shoot the sh8t with yall. lol I been in the car scene for awhile and my car is still the first car I owned. Its a 1984 Monte 427ci SBC, TH400, 9" rear end, and 10pt roll cage with full interior. I've been drag racing it ever since I put on a K&N filter. Now its time for a change, I'll be transforming it into a "street fighter". I'll still be taking it to the track, but like to have that clean modern look going down the drag strip. I hope to have some new wheels/tires by winter and hit the car shows by next year.

Welcome! Sounds like a really cool project. Do you have any pics of it now?
Please post lots of pics and info during the project.

Killer car man!! Very nice indeed! What is your plan as far as changes? To make it more of a street car and handle a bit better in the corners? You are off to a great start with that car.

BadBowTie 08-17-2009 09:43 AM

Well, Im building on a budget. As far as changes go... not much. But later down the road I like to switch from nitrous to a turbo or supercharger. It's really up in the air right now. First thing is first, I need some wheels. lol

Look up in the members list above JayR. He is a designer and also has a really nice line of wheels. The prices are reasonable and there is alot of options for color and sizing. Rushforthwheels.com is his web site. I think you'll like what you find there. (actually there is a link in the sponsor column to the left side of the screen here right above the Vintage Air link)

Bowtie,

I see you on Montecarloss.com all the time. I've seen you out at Little River before, I live in Lampasas, if you know where that is. The Monte looks sweet, I got some good 17" wheel sizes from Bernie(sickspeed) if you want them? I'm also building a street fighter.. Andy

mexMan 08-18-2009 09:05 PM

wow, you Monte looks great, great engine, great shape, great state, it's just wow, welcome ;)

BadBowTie 08-19-2009 07:22 AM

70rs- Thanks, that will help me out big time to talk to someone who knows his stuff. There's so many wheels out there, its really hard to pick one design and size. I think I narrow it down to 18's. I have yet to see bigger rims on a g-body that will actually look good and function as they should. I plan on taking the car with the "street fighter" look and running some low 10's in the 1/4. hehehe

Andy- whats up neighbor... I live near you in Leander (north of Austin). Lol Did Bernie sell his wheels? I'm striving to make my car be like Bernie's, his car is awesome. Thanks, but I'm planning to run 18's all around. Next time you see me at little river you should come by and say hello. See you around MCSS or here.

MexMan- your signature says it all! Thanks man.

SickSpeedMonte 08-19-2009 10:12 AM

No, I still have my wheels ;)

Welcome Mark, you'r car will be sick as hell with the pro-touring treatment.

And since I know Mark is being too humble to post this himself...

Whats up Bernie! Yea your right, I'm a little shy to post pictures of my car on here... stupid "drag racer" look. lol Its good to see a familiar person on here.

70rs 08-19-2009 01:46 PM

No need to be shy about your car. It is really nice. I just read through the mag article. Nice work on getting it together on the budget!

I have a '79 ElCo and just recently joined the site just like you. What size rim, tire, and backspacing are you running in the picture? I have 385 SBC, AFR 227 hears, T&D Shaft Rocker, Belt Drive, Zex 200 Shot, Ford 9", 6**/7** life solid roller, Art Carr 700R, 4:30's in the works and when I show 20" Boze wheels, and when I need to go ??? Not affraid to notch it to make'em fit so what's in the rear of yours and did you have to make any frame mods?

BadBowTie 08-20-2009 07:16 AM

Runup, I run a 15x8 pro convo with a 3.5" BS and a 28x10.5 MT slick. No notch frame...

but im in the process of notching my frame to fit bigger wheels. According to my calculations you should be able to fit a 12" wide tire once you notch the frame 1". I don't plan on lower my car anymore than it needs to be, but I guess you really don't know once the new wheels/tires are on the car. I've seen other Montes run 15x10 rims with a 29x10.5 slick with only a notch frame. :willy:

What stall do you plan to run? That 4.30 gear seems a bit too much if you plan to use the hose... unless its 1/8 mile racing?

Runupifudare 08-20-2009 12:54 PM

3200 stall and its a top end friendly set up.
