Garage makeover
With the Camaro done, I needed a new project, so I decided to finally finish the garage. I started a little over a month ago and this is where I'm at now. The colors will be grey, red, and black. The epoxy floor will be grey with black and white flakes, and the cabinets will be solid black.
Here's a pic to show what it looked like before I started. http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/random001.jpg I totally gutted the garage, including taking half the sheetrock off the ceiling to change some wiring. I hauled everything out of my detached garage to the attached garage. That took way longer than I thought it would. lol All the old shelving was torn down. It was pretty much back down to a bare shell. When I first built the garage I had insulated and installed vapor barrier, but after a number of years of abuse, the vapor barrier was trashed. I installed new vapor barrier, sheetrocked, taped, mudded, and sanded the walls and ceiling. That was a ton of work and took twice as long as I thought it would. I have a whole new appreciation for the guys in the trades! I built all new shelves that I soffited in. There are 5 recessed lights built into the soffit on each wall. They will make good task lighting once I install the new cabinets and countertop. Here are some pics of it coming together and the walls primed. http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/primed_02.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/primed_03.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_02.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_05.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_06.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_07.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_08.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_10.jpg Above the soffit opening, I installed tracks to mount the doors to enclose the shelving. They can be rolled out of the way to get to the storage, then rolled back to hide what's up there. I used some trim painted black to hide the tracks and to hold the bottom of the doors in place. It works great. In the soffit in the front of the garage, I cut openings in 2 of the doors for the speakers. The speakers are on the shelf behind them and the speaker grilles are mounted to the doors. The windows are jammed and trimmed with a darker shade of grey. The door trim will be the same grey. As you can see, I ran short on 2 trim boards on the bottom of the soffit. The red is oversaturated in these pics, it's pretty much an exact match of the red that's on a Craftsman toolbox. I may add some sort of trim/chair moulding where the red and grey meet... haven't decided on what to do there yet. http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_11.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_12.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_13.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_14.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_15.jpg Next is the epoxy. It will be grey with black and white flakes. It's a commercial product that has a clear top coat, so it will by shiny. After the epoxy the new cabinets will be going in. The are all black, black face and black doors. I found a laminate for the countertop that's called brushed stainless steel. It looks pretty cool. More pics in a few weeks. |
Wow....that garage wasn't nice enough for that camaro. I really like the recessed lighting. That is going to be one killer shop.
|
Man Scott that is really NICE! But I think you need a bigger frig...
|
Nice! I like the soffit and lighting, the cabinets should tie it all together very nicely.
|
Hey Scott I see you were watching "Pinks All Out" the one I was racing at:thumbsup: What the heck is Zack doing?
|
Looking good Scott. I like that overhead cabinet idea with recessed lights.
Which epoxy product are you going with? I recently did a couple with ArmorSeal 1000HS and they turned out good. I need to get some pics up I guess :( John |
That is kick-ass Scott!
I just did a minor garage makeover too, much less work than you did though. |
Nice job Scott. I would never leave it. Scott if you need a big brother for your son you can adopt me . When my cars done it would look sweet next to yours in there.
|
Looking good bud!
Big difference. |
Nice garage. I like the overhead storage. Any pics on how you built them?
|
Going to be more like a show room than a garage! :D I really dig the storage spaces and how they hide everything. Let me know if you need any of those black flakes....I've got a ton of them!
  |
Looks sweet, Any ideas on how you are going to clean the floor? Looks a little gnarly from that first pic....
Darren |
Thanks guys. I'll hopefully have more updates next week.
Darren, I think that pic made it look worse than it really is. I'll be scrubbing the floor with a degreaser, then etching it. Quote:

Hey Scott, man the garage is really looking good. Bet you can't wait till it's done.
|
Thanks Steve! I was going to call you today. I'll call you sometime tomorrow.

Looking great! The overhead cabinets is a great idea and the colr scheme is awsome, your car may become invisible blending in with the walls:)
|
thats looking real nice!

Nice shop man! Flat screen FTW!
|
Ok we definately need a shot of the Camaro in there with the pot lights on
|

Thanks Rick. I know you do killer woodwork, so I appreciate the kind words.
|
The garage looks great Scott. Can't wait to see it done. Just another thing I wish I had....
|
Scott -- BEAUTIFUL!!
Funny -- I'm looking at your new "shed" and I start thinking I should go out and re-do mine... Actually, I've tried real hard NOT to turn it into a "showroom" just yet... I want to keep it a "working" shop. BUT I'd love to have somewhere to show off the cars in a nice environment. Maybe in my next life. :hail:  |
Thanks! And I won't have any hesitation working in the madeover garage, it will just have a lot more light and storage, not to mention it will just be that much nicer to spend time in.
This week I worked on getting the floor degreased and etched and then used a special epoxy for filling the expansion gap as well as a few knicks in the floor. So much fun. The first layer of epoxy went on last night. This is the same product that will go over the grey colored epoxy that will act as the clear coat and it will have the same shine to it when done. I was stoked and the grey epoxy and flakes weren't even down yet. lol In the pics below, the epoxy has almost cured over. I could touch it and within another few hours and I could have walked on it. That's the same finish/sheen that the flor will have when done. I put the 2nd layer on this morning before work. I also broadcast the black, white and grey flakes on top of it. This evening, I'll be putting the final top clear coat on. I'll post more pics after I'm done. http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_17.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_18.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_19.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_21.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_20.jpg |
WOW!!
Okay -- the reason I didn't even "seal" my floor - was because of where I live - the "Great" Pacific NorthWET.... and everyone has had horror stories about how SLICK a concrete floor can be when your feet are wet... or oily etc. So I just left mine alone. BUT MAN IS THIS GOOD LOOKING!!! Almost makes it worth chancing a cracked head! (this might actually work some magic on me). Nice work Scott... that is just such a transformation! Do you have room for a couch and a couple of chairs??!!! You might not ever go inside anymore! PS -- I was toying with the idea of just "staining" my floors.... anyone know anything about how well that works in a shop?? I think Charley did his but I remember him not being happy with it for some reason?? |
Thanks! It looks quite a bit different this morning with the grey epoxy and color flakes down. You can add some non-slip sand type stuff to the top clear coat and it won't be slippery.
There's always a bunch of chairs in there. I spend more time in the shop than I do in the living room. LOL I wonder what problems Charley had with his floor? Anyways, I'll have more pics tonight. |
man that garage came out awesome. i like the orange sunset you happened to catch in the first of the five new pics you posted

Here's how it looks tonight with the grey epoxy and the color flakes. I'm really happy with it and the floor color/design reminds me of granite. http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_22.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_23.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_24.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_25.jpg |
That looks awesome Scott. Now that, is a "man cave". :D
|
You are pimpin! Your car is going to look great in there man. My floor is pretty similar. I paid some jabronis a couple bucks to do mine.

I agree with 89 RS Awesome job it looks sweet. When its cured we need a picture of the car in there.
|
Nice!!
|
Looking good Scott!
|
Scott, you need some burnout marks to seal the sealer now:rofl:
|
I might have blocked the floor with some 1200 grit first....
|
Floor is done. :woot:
Next up is cabinets, sounds like I'll have them in a few weeks. http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_26.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_27.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_28.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_29.jpg http://www.lateral-g.org/temp/progress_30.jpg |
Okay - this is like a "too good" of a paint job - hell -- now you won't be able to park in there!! No way you're putting a nasty ol' dirty tire on a floor like that!!!
WOW Looking good buddy -- Beautiful job!!  |
