road racing / scca ...68 camaro rules??

looking for tracks and some info on rules in the west coast area...socal, arizona, nevada...ect..

what i have is a 68 camaro on a full schwartz chassis running a 350 sb and tremec 5 speed and is getting 18 point cage and has all aftermarket suspention and lots of other goodies... and has all safty equipment, nascar seat w halo, fire system and window net.

i need to know what class i may fit into for racing on closed course , ive looked on scca boards but doesnt seem to fit what i have and i just need some guidence , if anyone can help id appreciate it greatly...

SCCA Rules/Classes
 
There are three pretty good road racing bodies in AZ, NV. SCCA, NASA, and Proautosports. You can access their rule books (and their schedules) on line, and there are a few differences. For example, NASA doesn't allow any bends in the back braces to the main hoop of the roll cage. They have slightly different weight breaks for roll bar tube sizing/wall thickness. One requires a dash bar, another makes it optional. SCCA doesn't allow aerodynamic side skirts.....You get the idea. I just spent three weeks updating my car to be in compliance with the toughest rules -- had to move the diagonal brace on the main hoop to cover "75% of the vertical height", move the battery cut-off switch, and add a metal (.050 aluminum) bulkhead between my fuel cell and the passenger compartment -- mine was originally fiberglass. I would recommend that you print copies of the rule books while you are still building your car, which looks great by the way. They also list tech reps/phone numbers and provide a process to apply for waivers -- better to get the answer now than after the car is finished. Complying with either SCCA or NASA rules will also get you in the Nevada/Silver State Open Road Race (which also has rules available on line). As to your question about classes, if you want to compete for National points, there are very specific rules (weight, horsepower, modifications, tires,etc.) for each class. However, if you are out to race in High Performance Driving Events (HPDEs), club days, or track days for fun, all you have to do is satisfy the safety requirements and you're good to go. NASA (or SCCA, I can't remember which) also has a Camero-Mustang Challenge series that looks like a ball.

Are you actually looking to race it wheel to wheel or just do HPDEs?

You are kinda going about it backwards for wheel to wheel racing, and if you are going to run with a specific governing body make sure that whatever cage you put in the car conforms to all their standards.

Well so far my main cage is done still have to finish it that's why I'm asking for rules but main area is done the correct way and is 095 wall in 1 3/4 dom tubing...very safe and is tig welded ..

Spoiler is from spoilers.com...rear wing I made out of aircraft grade carbon fiber..

If anyone has links to good reading for rules that would be cool..

This car will be raced and beatin...lol.. But also takin to track days and other events it car run in..cool part is where I live I can register it and drive it on street legally...gotta love havasu!!

Look into American Iron classes in NASA, I dont know if SCCA has anything you would fit into directly, maybe one of the unlimited classes. Having a full aftermarket chassis eliminates you from most SCCA classes that you could be competitive in.

EDIT: It also takes you out of AI and AIX

Try these for the rule books and other interesting info -- how to get started, car classes, schedules, etc.

www.azscca.com The rules are on the left side of the home page under club racing, cars and rules.

www.nasaaz.com The rules are at the top of the home page under rules.

www.proautosports.com The rules are on the left under rule book.

SCCA and PROAUTOSPORTS both have events in Phoenix on 26-27 Sep -- SCCA at Phoenix International Raceway (not too far from you) and PROAUTOSPORTS at Firebird Raceway. NASA has an event at PIR on 3 Oct. You might want to check out their events. It might give you some ideas. Good luck.
