Any project ideas for a Ferarri transaxle like this?
Earlier this summer Eric and I stopped at Tom Hanna's shop on our way to Columbus, Tom mentioned he had a few Ferarri tranaxles laying around that he did not know what he would use them for. I called him at a later date to inquire if one could be bought. He said if I got both to work I could have 1. So now the wheels begin turned, What should this go it? They are from a ferarri 456 I think it is. The internal guts are based off a GM 4T80 trans that is just a front wheel drive 4L80 trans. The trans is behind the rear axle center line. So rear weight and interior space are in my favor.
I have a few ideas, But what do you guys think? http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...ber2009031.jpg http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/t...ber2009030.jpg |

Why a VOLVO?

Better Idea, build a nova around that! lol it would be kinda cool in a truck or some sort.

How bout a Rambler?
|
Pantera.
|
What about a Corvair? Or a tube framed squareback? I do like the Volvo idea too. What are the options for engines with that?

Hey! I'm going to sic my friend Timmy Diver on you for trying to steal his build!! BTW - If you want "Ferrambo" - Just call him and buy it - Mike doesn't want it anymore! |
Roger -- It would be WAY kool in Jasons BUICK....
We could call it "The Ferick"... then you could do a follow up build and we'd call that "The Frack"... So then you can take them and sell them as a pair - at BJ auction. You can get up on stage with a blazer that matches their colors! Hell man! You'd be FAMOUS... and would forever be known for building the Freick 'n' Frack. |

Roger ---
Stick that Ferrari transaxle in one of these http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMG_1156.jpg and win one of these: http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMG_1157.jpg |
Okay - THIS THREAD IS RESPECTFULLY RETURNED TO IRONWORKS CONTROL!
|
Okay - seriously Roger.... Can that tranny be shifted with the paddles on the steering column or is it a 6 speed manual or what?
It could be very interesting in my 37 Ford Minotti... driven by my LS6 and a Jason Rushforth design... and we Auto X and track the crap out of it?? |
Vega or a Gbody
|
I kinda like the NOVA idea... '66 or '67...
The minute you stick something/anything Ferrari in.... it better handle like a go kart... I like the Volvo P1800 idea - but it's not very "commercial". Somebody is going to want to be able to get their money out of a project like this... ditto the VEGA idea tossed out (even though I ADMIT I once owned one...) Vegas really only have a "AA/FC" image -- and this is a FERRARI part... "WE" have to come up with something that can "carry" that Ferrari mystique... and be respected. IMHO -- Ferrambo is "sitting" for a very good reason... as wonderful as it is - it's still a "rambler"... even though it's a very very kool one. Personally -- I'd like to stick it in a mid year Vette... but that's not really "different enough" to make a big splash.... even though, to me, it's seems a "natural".... big HP - big handling - cutting edge... How about a VW "micro bus" -- slammed -- LSx -- Ferrari transaxle... big tires and brakes... It would be SO kool to see something like that just tearing ass on track.... There's enough room in one that you could just rock out the interior = set up for like 4 bucket seats - with the LSx MID ENGINE... but it could be the cruise machine from hell --- At first glance it's a hippy bug - but on second look there's something just all wrong with that thought - and you start to notice big azz tires - aggressive stance and a sound that just doesn't quite fit what you're looking at.... |
I also like the Nova idea. But in a wagon. Lot's of room, popular body, good looking too. Different, but not too different. ??
|
I LOVE that idea Eric!!
There's a guy in Bainbridge - did a Nova wagon - made it a 2 door.... did the B pillars like a Nomad I think... LS motor -- chopped top - drove it to Power Tour and back... Bet he's ready to move on to a different project and might give up the body... it has a lot of work in it already. It would be killer! Good idea. But what do I know -- it's ROGERS project. :hail: :hail: |
I saw that car in person. It does have a ton of work in it and it would be a great platform for the transaxle swap.
Hey Rodger?? How about a wagon?:D |
Well first off I have no intention in copying anybody. The ferambo is an awesome car, but not quite me cup of tea great way to display your work. I have a truck that does this.
The trans should be able to be paddle shifted since a 4L80 can be paddle shifted. The distance from the rear axle center line has to be pretty long, so that will leave some cars out. I doubt it would fit a camaro, it might fit a 66-67 nova. If we did this to Johns nova he could have that back seat he always dreamed of. I have been thinking of using it in a street rod, something with a short interior section and a 2 seater. I have a 36 ford 3 window and think it would be cool in that, but maybe to long. But what engine do you hook it up to? Maybe this http://www.falconerengines.com/bio/bio_l6.php I was also thinking an almost flat floored 4 seat bubble top impala. Pantera or GTM super car would be cool also. |
like the Impala idea. Sure would be a "one of one" build no matter what you do.
Hey Rodger, uh....did you notice the number at the bottom right corner of the opening page?:brix: |

Rodger pull all my **** out and jamb it in the camaro. You would have to do this free of charge considering youd be FAMOUS. I'll buy the blazer jacket and you can name it FERRARMO. Which translates to very expensive so forget it. |
yes i do
Rodger
a 61-62 tempest...cool body lines . was a rear trans car to begin with....that would be cool i just check and bakersfeild craigslist has one for 2500 says no rust... this is a lighweight car with cool lines that would look great slammed . tom |
Just give it to me,That way you won't have to worry about it.:unibrow:
|
No Camaros, Novas or Chevelles. A 61 Impala Bubbletop would be cool. I like the idea of stuffing it into Rushforths Buick. Its got to be something outside the box but will still get you your money come time to sell. An old Pontiac, Buick or Olds would be different. Maybe a Ford but not another Camaro, Nova or Chevelle.
|
I like the idea of putting it in the 36 3 window. With all the crazy body mods youve dreamed up for her why not put a totally unique drivetrain, and that motor would be SIK & fit so well:thumbsup:
|
CrazyCarl on here has an Old Tempest....it could use the Ferrari transaxle....I should show him this thread!
Tim |
Rodger,
I'd use it a car that could need a mid-engine. a Pantera or a GTM or even a Porsche 911 slantnose with a midmount LSX. even a Radical or an old Lola or McLaren copy. ciao |

american super car inc
Do your homework before you spend alot of money, they are only good for about 430 hp and that is based on a short tire and light weight. When we did our 63 split window vette (mid engine) we used a Mindeola transaxle
it was the only thing that would hold any kind of Hp and the axles to hold any HP over 600 are not cheep did tons of research on trans axles before our build not a budget build If you have any questions I would be happy to help with any info |
430 hp max??
Fugediaboutdit.... I'm out! I was dreaming bad azz LSx 454 ish - with Kinsler side draft EFI... so the hood sides would be off the car (my 37 or Rogers 36).... :unibrow: |
GTM or Stude
GTM or a 53-54 Stude get my vote!!!
|
Something early 30's. Open wheeled, minimal bodywork, tons of exposed engineering, minimal interior, all business. V10 or V12 with carb looking injectors. No paint, all metal finished with some bits of brass, aluminum, titanium, etc. Very mechanical looking.
Jeff- |
914/916, behind an all-alloy LS. SO killer.
