Just purchased an original one owner 69' Camaro
 

Hey everyone,

I am new to the forum. This website is great. I just purchased my first 1969 Camaro. I managed to find an original one owner car. I bought it from a 58 year old lady who's dad bought it for her when she graduated high school back in 1969. Its 100% complete and has all the original body panels and interior. And it runs and drives! It has the inline 6 with 3 speed manual. It would have been awesome if she had bought one with a V8. It's an X44 car. The title is so old and brittle, it was filled in with a typewriter. Crazy. I have been looking for one for the past 5 years that's in this condition. It feels good for the search to be over. Haven't really been into classic cars. My last car was an 02' Viper GTS, so this is a big change.

She showed me the protecto plate, the original paper tags, and window sticker but she didn't want to give it to me because she wanted it for memories. That sucked.

Perhaps you can borrow / scan / make copies, and give the originals back to her (If you care about that stuff). Better than having nothing....

That's the way to get them, mine was similar but was a second owner. I got all the original stuff just to go with the car. I'm sure you're going to PT it or you wouldn't be here.:D

Pro touring definitely. I've read a lot of your posts and know your car from all the pictures here. Nice car. I plan on doing the black on black too.

Definitely get a copy of the protectoplate and window sticker. It's the only way to know what the car originally came with. Nice find! :thumbsup:

Where did you find this? I'm also new to the forum, and I'm looking for a car like this, too. I KNOW there are some out there. Anybody know of one?

Yeah, I think I am going to contact her again and try to get all the original stuff that she kept or at least get copies of it. It's been in my garage since I bought it. I'm starting to feel like I shouldn't take apart this car since everything is original. Did any of you guys feel that way? A couple of my buddies told me to just start with a junker since my plans are to make a completely custom pro-touring car anyway. Did you guys feel guilty when you did it? I know a couple of the members here started with an original car.

I started with a original and complete 1970 Camaro RS. I am also going to give it the full PT treatment (someday when all of the planet align). I don't feel one bit guilty for taking it apart because it's my car and I am building it for me.

You should get at least copies of all the documents if you can. That kind of stuff is hard to come by and would be fun to have for your car no matter how you build it.

There are some other sites that might encourage you to just restore it to original, but I think a lot of the guys here would agree that you should build it the way you want. It is yours, do what ever you want with it. Just post lots of pictures while you do it.:D :cheers:

Sorry! Your buddies are very misguided individuals! :lol: You ALWAYS start with the very best sheet metal you can find. Period - end of story.

Now I would say this as well - and you can do whatever you want to with the info and the car.... The car is not a "desirable" blah blah blah - COPO car - or big block A/C - M22 car etc... where the Protecto plate would be important... it's a birth document and pedigree for a car... but for a 6 cylinder car -- it's a "ho hummer". I'm in NO WAY making fun of the car - nor trying to degrade a killer purchase by you... I'm just being factual. I bought a 53K original one owner 307 - 3 speed - drop top - it had all the paperwork - was a great body - and had the protecto plate. I gave the plate to a guy that collects them... and my use for the car was to hack it up and build a PT car. Why start with a Z/28 collector car - might as well start with a car that "nobody wants".... ie., a low horse - base car.

Having said that - if you like the "history" part of the hobby and like the "story" part -- then that is totally up to you and you should just keep it the way it is... but if you go to bed dreaming of what the car in your dreams could be.... well then... start building. They built MILLIONS (kidding) of Camaros... they're hardly rare... so you're not going to break anyones heart by making the car of your dreams. The only heart to be broken is your own.

You're correct on that part. I just have to remind myself that it's just a base model car that wasn't desirable back in the day and something that's also not collected today.

Which makes it a PERFECT candidate for the pro-tour treatment!!

Perfect canditate for a "Petina Rod" IMO. Give it the pro-touring treatment, but keep the original paint/interior. Best of both worlds.....
