Need some help with next project.

Well, I sold my 80 Trans Am so I am itching to get another project going. I have two 69 Fastbacks, but I am not sure which one I should pick, I am hoping I can find a way to get both up here and piece each together into one. The primer car has V8 suspension and the green one doesn't. I think there could be some stuff hiding under the primer too, but the quarters look nice inside and out, it's just the tail panels and nose that need work. Each car only has a small amount of quarter panel rust , corner of doors and some floor pan rust. Should all be an easy fix. Haven't checked the frame rails yet.

The green car was hit in the right quarter and they started to fix it. A full quarter should do the trick and I am confident in welding.

I am just curious which car you guys would choose as a base. I am leaning towards the green car. I think it would be kinda cool driving it around as is like a rat rod. My plans are to blast the engine bay, paint it and the same for the suspension. Then blast the interior and rhino line the inside and underside before paint. . Anyone have any opinions on this? Also want to put 05+ interior in.

My next question is what engine should I got with? Our pick a part has tons of engines for like $200. I guess a 302 or 351 would do the trick. Is there any years that are better than the others? What year motor/tranny can I pull out and have a close fit? I plan on just pulling a 351 and hopefully a 4 speed out of an old Ford Truck.

I want something comparable to my 99 Trans Am, so 300-325rwhp should be fine, which engine would do the trick and still be efficient and road friendly?

Thanks in advance for the help guys, just trying to get my ducks in a row before I start these.

Hard to tell the condition of either one of the cars without looking real deep. I would pull them both out of the grass and figure out which panels are in the best shape and pull those to make one. Just by the pictures, the green car looks a little better.

TreySmith 11-24-2009 06:23 PM

Yeah, my sister's husband has a tractor so I will pull them out a little bit next time I go.

Anyone know anything about the Ford engines? I am shooting for a 351 but I really don't know what is better than what.

Trey, which ever you chose you have your hands full. Looks like a hell of alot more work than the TA was. Good Luck

Nothing a hundred grand and a three years worth of work can't fix!! LOL

Trey -- Remember the cardinal rule of hot rodding and engines. "There's no substitute for cubic inches".

More cubic inches makes more power with less fuss... 300 hp from a 351 is a cake walk.

a stroker 351 windsor (408) and you should have any horsepower you want.

Looks like great projects, I'm basically a Chevy guy but I do love the 69-70 Mustang Fastback. One day I'll have one.

Yeah, just kinda got tired of it I guess. The car was done half ass so I wanted to build another car the right way. Really though I just needed another daily driver, I have always wanted an LS1 car so I figured it was now or never, plus I made ALOT of money off the car. Something broke on it today when I was messing around with my friend so hopefully it won't be a big fix and put the Mustang on hold...

So 351's are a pain in the ass to find. I found a ton of untouched 302's out of 89 or so Crown vics and such. Would it be a hard task to make it work with what I have? It's only $150.

Anyone know how to get a title the easiest? I found a 70 fastback for like $1250 in nice shape plus I am going to put his other car together for him, so basically a labor trade. BUT it doesn't have a title, how should I check the VIN? Run it by the police station?

70rs 12-03-2009 06:25 PM

Police station, insurance agent (maybe), department of lic, ??

I'd take the VIN - and the seller - to the Department of Motor Vehicles - have them run a title check - and if it comes back "clean" no liens - you can apply for a lost title (if it's in the name of the current "seller") -- or at least you can find out who is on the title and try to find them...

TreySmith 12-03-2009 06:33 PM

The owner before him lost the title, I guess I could go through him.

GregWeld 12-03-2009 06:40 PM

Well -- You get into the "possession is 9/10ths of the law" -- the current "guy" has possession - depends on how long - and if he can PROVE he's had it that long - does he have some paperwork - like a bill of sale from the title holder...
is the current title holder "around" so he could give you an affidavit stating that the title is lost and that he's willing to transfer title to you etc.

It's messy - but can be done - you'll just have to make a couple trips to your DMV to see what you need.

TreySmith 12-04-2009 05:50 PM

I asked him about it yesterday and he said he has actually already started on getting the title. Does it actually take 6 months? I probably wouldn't even own the car that long lol.

TreySmith 12-11-2009 09:13 PM

Here are some plans I have for the car. Anyone know what kind of rims these are? They are on the KITT car and I photoshopped them onto a 69'.. I think they look great. I am probably not going to go with red though...

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/3278/mustangy.png

mexMan 12-12-2009 10:36 AM

Those are Ford Special Vehicle Team wheels, or SVT's if you will, they're on the Shelby SuperSnake and other special versions, like the Shelby Convetribles

TreySmith 12-13-2009 06:49 PM

Thanks, but I think the rims will be out of the budget for now at $550 a piece. Probably just stick with some TT2's for the time being.

mexMan 12-13-2009 09:16 PM

OR, there's an option, it will be kinda hard but it always work, look for a screwed up past generation Shelby KR, they have those wheels you want. I've seen them in another car but can't remember where, but I'm sure the KR wears them.

TreySmith 12-20-2009 02:04 PM

I think 20's would be a little crazy on the front so they won't work. Anyways here is the car I am gonna get, what do you guys think for $1500?

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4274/mustangss.png

mexMan 12-20-2009 04:29 PM

PURRFECT! But engine pics or didn't happen.

TreySmith 12-20-2009 04:52 PM

Lol sure thing, it was in the shop so I could only look through the window. Looks really nice though.

mexMan 12-20-2009 05:00 PM

Yeah, it looks pretty much complete, now, the photoshop you did with the KR wheels, is that your final result idea?

TreySmith 12-20-2009 05:08 PM

I am not sure, I really don't want another red car but that's probably what it's going to end up being, I might go with black or some type of blue though. I can't decide lol..

But most likely like this except bigger rims. There aren't very many pro touring 69/70 Mustang's so I can't really make a decision.

Lol it matches the car! Classy red paint and black stripe. Maybe I can get it as a package deal :D

Do you guys think putting on a 69 Tail and side scoops would hurt the value of this car?

I really like the look of the Blacked Mustang from Year One and probably will shoot for that except for a little more chrome to break up the black.

@GergWeld: there's something VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERY wrong about you :p
(though it looks like a really good frame table)

@Trey, there's never too much red, BUT you could try doing something original, but there aren't anymore original ideas, so being that hard, you'll have to innovate if you want to achieve something unique, so, what I'd do is paint it olive green, give it a stock look, but with some inches less, kinda big wheels (kinda, not too big) and a modern-retro interior. Now that'd be expensive, so, I don't know.

GregWeld 12-21-2009 10:23 AM

  ^^^^^^^

I've never seen a tool I didn't want!!

mexMan 12-21-2009 10:28 AM

^Any tools that you CAN use? kidding kiddo :p What do I know, I'm 17

TreySmith 12-21-2009 02:30 PM

Here are some pics.. I think it will be a fun driver. Going to definitely need some new quarters though and a trunk lid. I could maybe save the left door but it's kinda bad. The car was really nice underneath and in the engine bay, just alot of surface rust and grime. The rear floors looked good and so did the passengers, the drivers had a spot up by the feet that was all the way through. The trunk looked good but the trunk lid was too far gone.

I think this will be a cruiser/ daily driver to keep the miles off my 99 Trans Am.. Prolly going to just going to fix the floors, restore the engine bay, put on some rims and restore the interior, then drive it for a while and sell it. It will make a cool rat rod for sure.
