Transmission Poll
This poll is just for fun. I know what transmission I want to run but just curious.
Thanks. |
I would see if you could find an old Doug Nash / Richmond 5-speed :D
JK Already said in the other thread I love my TKO600 |

Spoken like a true drag racer! LOL This is LATERAL G..... it has to have more than two forward gears. |
Lenco! :D
In all seriousness, one of my goals is to have at least one street car someday that has a Lenco behind it. |
My vote is for the new Richmond 5 speed with over-drive and Long Shifter.
Don't get me wrong i think the TKO is a great tranny too. I went with the Richmond to handle the torque i am putting to the ground from the 540 BB camaro. Also was a very easy install and shifts good for me. Just my humble thoughts. gb |
Tremec
I have had several standard transmissions & have found that the T-56 does eveything I need it to. The most recent version of the T-56 trans I'm using is the Magnum & am very pleased with the results.

My vote is for the TCI 6x Six-Speed GM 4L80E Auto with paddle shifter. :)
|
Cool tranny but it weighs as much as a truck and will suck up a butt load of snort.

Very easy install. I believe the new Richmond over drive tranny uses the Richmond 6 speed case, i believe thats what Richmond told me is, so requires a shorter drive shaft. This transmission and shifter are a little pricey compared to some, but i needed something this strong after breaking 2 transmissions before. I run 755 lbs of torque with my camaro, i have pushed this transmission hard, it truly is bullet proof and runs great on the road coarse. I believe the warranty rating is for 600lbs of torque according to Richmond, granted i do not run slicks so traction is limited but with the DSE Quadralink it does still bite hard. I run a 308 rear Richmond gear and a 289 first gear in the tranny and .77 in 5th. At 70 mph i am around 2300 rpms's with a 315x17x35 rear tire and allows me 15 miles to the gallon when i keep my foot out it. Transmission does whine a little but not bad, i have been very happy, with great support from Richmond. |

Can you hear the whine of your transmission over the roar of your motor? Thanks. |

I run with a 3 chamber flowmaster so that my bride will ride with me. This has really helped with taming down the engine noise. But when you step into the throttle you will need to prepare for takeoff and hold on, an almost violent roar occurs from this beast. :unibrow: The whine is not bad at all from the tranny, just tells me a well built tranny is behind this bigblock. |
TH 400 with a GearVendors overdrive

Does you new bride like riding in the car even if you get on it a time or two? I think my girlfriend is somewhat afraid to ride with me and the car is not even built yet. My daughter is ready to get up and go. Thanks. |

If anyone chose "Other" in the poll above please tell me what trans you prefer and why.
Thanks. |

what was the intended use again? if its anything other than cruising i would stick with the t-10 if thats what you have. IMO, if not, go with a 6speed, i've read the internals from the camaro fit in a tr400 for a SBC application. i dont know if someone else has mentioned it or ask, but i thought i would add my .02
http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TC-'Street%20Transmissions'-0.aspx I'm not a fan of the t-56, but thats my opinion, they havent erned a rep for me unless there a rebuilt version like Tremec T-56 |

I am not even close to buying a trans but at the moment I am leaning towards the TKO 600. Hopefully Greg is proud of me  (just joking with you Greg) |
EEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! !!
 Funny -- It's someone elses car - I never really care what they end up with - as long as they're making an INFORMED decision.... and are happy with the result. I just hate to see people make a big costly mistake because I've made them all before myself. |
That's why this is a great site with a lot of helpful people like yourself Greg. It's nice to have a place where I can bounce question's off everyone and get opinions from everyone who has "been there do that."
Thanks. |
Looks like with over half of the votes the T56 is the tranny of choice.
Personally I am putting in a TKO600. |
I have the TKO 600 in my Macho TA. It works great with my 3.42 gears. At 72mph it is only turning 2000 rpm. Not that there is anything wrong with my TKO, but I am taking it out and putting in a 4l80e. Shifting is great but I drive a truck for a living and sometimes it is great just to put in drive and go !!!!!!!:D
|
I haven't purchased a tranny just yet but still leaning towards the TKO 600.

This might sirpize a couple , but i have been road racing ad manual shifting my BTO level3 tr2004r with a stout 461ci 530 hp 577 lbs torque for some time, its flawless and perfect not to use a clutch and breaking on the trans a bit as wel!!.
COOLING is the secred here and not transbraking to agresif. Im so impressed that im considering (for my new 730 hp 650 lbs torque 7000rpm engine combo) to buy a stronger one from exstreem automatics that can handle 1000 hp!!. looking at the monsteres clutchles 6 speed from keisler with a price tag of 8000 usd to it the 3950usd for the tr2004r isend al that bad. also most automatics seem to be able to take more torque then manuals.. |

Ron,
If you do decide to go with a tko600 give a look at Liberty Gear. They have an exclusive (patent) cluster bearing mod that prevents the cluster shaft from getting pushed out the bottom of the case and seals it up properly. especially if your running some ungodly amount of torque. They have figured out all the shifting design flaws in the rails as well. Great group of guys to chat with. The t56 Magnum is also a great choice. Rich |
Ron,
Thanks for the thread, I've been researching and debating trannys for my '69 Camaro for a few years. After reading all the good info in your thread..............I'm still leaning towards the T56 after having a .50 6th T56 in a '94 "Service Package" Camaro. Stielow's cars are my primary inspiration and he appears to have good success with T56's. |
