Project Dullboy
Hey guys. Im not a new member here but I've been lurking and posting in here and there. I'm thinking its officially time for a project build thread. As the saying goes, "All work and no play makes me a dull boy.". After owning the car for years its been through a lot of changes, stages and swaps. I paint cars for a living and do a lot of side work on the weekends. sometimes i i feel like im burnt out on working on cars from messing with them all day and I just want to be able to enjoy my camaro. This time is the last time around! All work and no play has made me a dullboy. So I've officially named my project "Dullboy".
-Yet another red 69 camaro!! Drive train -6.0L/cam/springs/pushrods/rodbolts -Edlebrock performer rpm intake -Speed demon 750 carb -MSD6010 ingnition box -4L80E(stock for now) eventually i will get a converter and shift kit -TCI controller with paddle shifter(still need to buy) - Ford 8.8 rear/373's/ girdle/ axles (needs to be installed) Front Suspension - Speed-tech upper and lower A-arms - Hotchkiss 1-1/8 hollow sway bar - QA1 12 way shocks - 650LB springs with ajustable cups Rear Suspension - currently looking at some cat 5 springs. im really torn between them or a g-link - QA1's(eventually) Chassis -Iroc steering box -half height solid bushings -integrated subframe connectors -carshop 1" set back plates -8point cage (near future) Brakes - Willwood 7/8's manual master - 12" LS1 brakes for the front - Slotted and cross drilled rotors - 12 inch cobra rears(eventually) - Slotted and cross drilled rotors(eventually) -EBC red stuff pads (eventually) Body -custom adjustable spoiler -shaved rear panel -smoothed bumpers -front splitter -shaved wipers I find a lot of these builds to be rather intimidating budget-wise but i always try to make to due. Best bang for the buck is what i strive for. Ill try to find some time and post up a lot of pics and procedures i went through. Im about half done with it now and really hope to cruise it around feb/march, although it will prolly be more like next december! I better get back to work! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_0dbafdaf.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_7972af8d.jpgGM Muscle |

Interesting...........

Okay -- I'm confused -- you show an LSx motor -- and then some pictures of an MSD distributor... Are you going to run a distributor on top of it being carbed??
Kool project by the way!! I like the "flat" colors people are doing now... so as a painter - let me ask this - cause people I've talked to with flat paints HATE them now... they say they take more work to keep looking good than nice shiny paint... and most say they wouldn't paint their cars like that again. So I was thinking that maybe the flats are too "open"? What's your thoughts about this?? |
Killer project. I am also curious about the "flat" paints. What kind of extra care is involved in keeping them looking good? And how does that care differ from a "glossy" paint?
|
nice build you have
|
lookin good
|
Thanks for the kind words guys. Greg, my photobucket is VERY unorganized! Haha that dizzy was for the old powerplant. I'm using the msd6010 box. As far as flat paint goes. It isn't any more open than regular clear. You can actually buff it to a shine if you wanted to. The main issue with flat is that it really shows oily and water spots. Since there isn't any gloss to reflect anything around, these spots really stick out like a sore thumb. I think hand prints are the worst. The oil from your hands sticks to it like all paint but it's just more noticeable since there's no reflection to distract the eye! You also must concider that it isn't glossy slick and has a very fine texture to it. This also allows stuff to "stick" easier. As far as care. You cant wax it so I prefer to just use nice car soap and water. You gotta pay to play!!

got the motor stabbed in today.. took a few select cusswords, a couple of pry bars and a small head ache but all in all its in!
(sorry about the large pics, my work comp wont do the thumbnails) (oh and sorry about the quality of pics, my phone lense was dirty) i decided i would go ahead and tackle the task of building a lift plate. now this thing is purely function over beauty so dont knock it! it took about 1.5hrs start to finish. plamsa, hand grinder, welder and a drill press. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/27ec44a9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/ffd9ebc2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/04020766.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/e1bb485a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/88667a4a.jpg |
went ahead and put the knock sensor plate and intake on as well.

Very cool. Keep us posted please.

well i fabbed up the trans crossmember. being a 4L80e on top of setting the engine an extra inch back posed quite a problem. i read some where that i could modify a factory TH400 crossmember and it would work, so i bought a "factory" th400 crossmember from a member on this board. well im not saying that it wasnt bolted up to a th400 in a previous car but this crossmember wasnt what i would call stock as the mount had be relocated. i went ahead and used it just for convienence. im working with limited tools and rescources (mostly only hand tools) so i make due with what i have.
the crossmember may be a little over kill but i think it will also help support the chassis. win win. anyways here are the pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/3291666a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/fa77253d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/d6be5f5d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/58813993.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/85b756b9.jpg it ended up working out pretty good. the carb flange sits a zero level when on the ground:captain: |
i had about 10 minutes to waste before i clocked out so i went ahead and mocked up the coils to tease myself...

well i havent had a whole lot of extra time but i am trying to get my acc drive together. this is where im at. what do you guys think? i am going to get the alt where the a/c used to be and think im going to use the 3rib section of the crank to run it. any opinions?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/72dc4c08.jpg |
well i have my accessories pretty much lined out. unfortunately with the combo of 1" set back plates and wanting to use the 3 rib section of the crank to run the alternator i had to notch the frame.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_129a6e86.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_06c5bc80.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_a6aed866.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_848ea138.jpg |
here is the drivers side plate i made to hold everything. im only using hand tools, a plasma and a welder so you have to stay open minded. the all thread is only temporary so that i could get the spacing tweaked
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_757c541a.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_91b17949.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_b1adf022.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_b9791223.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_71cc2f63.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_fe8e0091.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...h_54ebb696.jpg |
and the passengers side alternator low mount..

Great progress there! Looking good. What's next?
|
I need to put the starter, headers and trans dipstick on and make sure it all fits. Then ill probably install my jessel rockers and I'm going to have to get fancy with my cooling lines in the 4l80e! I have a ton of work left on the car but I'm just doing it one chore at a time. Starting up front and working my way back. I'm doing the car alone so it gets overwhelming if I start thinking about everything that needs to be done! Haha

I really like that you set up your own front drive system. This is something I'll have to fab as well. Thanks for the tutorial...
|
haha no problem Ron! thanks for the kind words guys. i can get about in depth as you need me to about it. and luckily i have the templates i made for the drivers side bracket.. :unibrow: im concidering maybe cutting out a few extra on my buddies cnc plasma. might let them go for a small donation... i made the intial template out of card board. then i used 3/16 hardboard. i used allthread with jamb nuts on it to space the front plate out to the right distance and then made the spacers. once i was satisified with everything bolted up i got the plasma out and went to town. the main reason i built my own is because im using the truck waterpump and balancer. there just arent too many options out there for them. i mean $12.00 vs $2100.00 is a no brainer for me. the systems that are out there use the water pump bolts which doesnt seem sturdy enough for my taste.:captain:

what can i say.. im cheap.. if you look close at my water pump i modified it. i built a plug out of aluminum with a 4 degree taper and then milled the front blank out and put the water neck forward.. pretty straight forward and i didnt have to spend that 175 for a new one.. although i seriously had to talk myself out of buying the whole nascar style system with the replaceable impeller.. i keep trying to buy race car parts for my driver..
|
well ive decided i am probably going to sell her.. i am taking care of some tasks on the car before hand though so ill keep updating!
as of lately.. the LSX being moved back an inch posed a problem with the heater core box so i simple clearenced it, flipped it, and rerouted the hoses. i was beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what to do and one of the "hillbillies" up here said just flip it upside down and run it out of the bottom.. some times the simplest solutions are staring us in the face:faint: . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/e59a04f2.jpg i put a small layer of rtv between the core and the hose to make sure there would be no leaks! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/2a4e4d86.jpg |
i also installed the Hooker long tubes and 6ls computer system.
(sorry about the size of the pics, firewall at work here is funky) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/e922c0dc.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/37fb9edd.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/c2c14957.jpg |
Nice Brantley! Who's coil mounts are those?
|
things that still need to be done:
-rearend -Interior -Trans controller -fuel system -final block/paint -weather strip |
finally got the steering sorted. i was having issues with rag joint/ set back ls1/ half height subframe bushings/ iroc box.
basically i found some d shaft and a steering u-joint. i used four deep plug welds to secure the d-shaft to the stock steering shaft and set screws to hold the flat spots. this way i still have the collapse feature. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/bd912ae7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/acf8543d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/7c7b7d09.jpg |
heading in the booth for a final prime today. im leaving it with the head painter while im on vacation next week. hopefully when i get back it will be straight and red..
|
i know its dusty but i figured id throw in a shot with the front sheet metal on and stuff..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/ba89a010.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/6db267f7.jpg |
well the car turned out great. we are going to let it cure out in the heat for a few days then knock it down with some 600 wet and reclear it. they always seem to turn out extra slick that way...
the color is gm9260 with a tiny bit of blue pearl (to kill the orange) all of the trim and chrome should be back from the powder coater anytime now.. i got everything done flat black.. :unibrow: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/e761682a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/7f16c304.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...b/263d7cef.jpg |
kinda nerve racking taking sand paper to a perfectly good paint job but it will be worth it tomorrow morning when the flow coats come..
