Project WTF????

Here is another of the four chevelle projects we have going. This car actually has a pretty long story behind it. We bought what we believed to ba a very solid 66 Chevelle convertable of E-Bay...well needless to say it unrepairable, in fact even the frame was rusted in two and was being help together by some sheetmetal screws and sheet metal the had been blacked out on the bottom of the frame. That was just one of the many problems with the car...I should have pics of it this weekend. So we decided that we would buy a good solid coupe and make use of our convertable top and inner structure that was still good on the car....

So here is the coupe, soon to be convertable as of last night and here is the list of panels to be either replaced or removed and installed

Floor braces
Floor pans (front, rear, trunk)
Inner quarters
full qaurters
New doors
New fenders
new core support
inner fenders
so basically everything but he rockers and a-pillers

No details on the build yet as we aren't sure on power train yet, it does have some killer DPEngineering wheels on it :unibrow:

I'm not sure if you're aware, but convertible chevelles had boxed frames, and coupes did not, so if you use that frame, you will want to beef it up some.

An El Camino frame is the same as a convertible, except it is 3-1/4" longer behind the rear wheels.

ya we are aware..thank you thought....The plan is to box the coupe frame and add a K member. Rear rails will also be moved in an up. I will try and get pics of the convert frame it will make you sick, to think that someone actually honestly sold this car and said that he drove it all the time and it was in good shape.....some people! :(

Looks like the shop is filling up with cool projects. There can't be many '66 verts running around.

YA the shop is full mike.....and no we haven't seen many 66 verts so it should be unique when finished. I should have more pics up shortly, me and kenny worked on the car all weekend and made some good headway on it but like I said before this is the most cutting we have ever done on a car, and hopefully we won't be out doing this one anytime soon!

we also built new frame rails for the rear this weekend and got them installed! But no pics of the rails....they are similar to the rails on my car, but kicked in 3 in!

Well, I can say one thing..... You guys have a lot more patience than me. :)

Ever notice how 9 out of 10 classic cars posted on eBay state "no rust"? Isn't it the other way around?

Anyway, glad you got the restoration ball rolling!

Smack_talker 11-21-2005 06:17 PM

The shop I used to work at did a conversion of a 55 Chevy from hardtop to convert. The only part they used from the convert donor car was the cowl. I know what you guys are going thru...Good Luck. Looks great so far.

I notice a lot of cars on Ebay and elsewhere being advertized as Rust Free, I think they mean that you will receive rust at no additional charge.

I did take some pics of what was left of the car....although they aren't accurate because we also scrapped the whole front clip....I have never seen so much rust even the underside of the hood(all the structure) was almost completly rotted......
