Lokar Dip Stick 4L60E

OK what's the deal, I got a lokar dipstick for a 4L60 E and it leaks like crazy.

70rs 01-25-2010 07:53 PM

Um, was there a seal included for where it goes into the trans? Where is the leak?

bigtyme1 01-25-2010 08:26 PM

Yes. It has two o rings

70rs 01-25-2010 08:49 PM

I would just call you but I lost your number in the whole "cell phone toilet fiasco" several weeks ago.
I sent another PM with a thought on that problem. Let me know how it goes.

Sunkistcamaro 01-25-2010 09:26 PM

Oh no... I just got mine in the mail.
Let me know if you figure it out.

bigtyme1 01-27-2010 06:30 AM

I called Lokar and they said the solution is High Temp RTV around the top of the tube going into the trans. I did it last night so will see how it works once it's dried and fill again. I'm just thinking if they want me to use RTV then the o Rings are not doing there job correctly. I did try thicker o rings but I could not get it to go in the whole.

It's not uncommon to use silicone on a dipstick o ring. All the joys of buidling these things....:D

Should I put it over the o rings as well as the top?

Vegas69 01-27-2010 11:33 AM

You definitely want silicone where the o-ring seats. That is your smallest window to seal.

GregWeld 01-31-2010 02:25 PM

Yep -- Basically their stuff is one size fits all - and it really fits nothing - which would include their block dipsticks.

Having said that --- Use black high temp gasket maker/sealant.... not clear "SILLY-CONE" that you'd use to do your windows on your house...

Make sure both parts are clean clean clean clean - which means to me - use brake cleaner and a clean paper towel - a couple of times - put the O rings back on and squeeze your sealant on.

The reason I do not use "silly-cone" == when you think about Silicone - it's a LUBRICANT - and what you're really trying to do is to "glue"/"seal" two surfaces together.... not make them slick... silicone is pliable but needs to be mixed with some gluey stuff to make it a sealant for our uses... Thus the RTV stuff...

Maybe someone can add to my we bit o knowledge -- 'cause sometimes (most?) I get it all wrong... and I'm not above being schooled!

Yep, I got more Silicone ( RTV)then the spice girls on this thing and it still leaks. Let it set for 3 days, started it today for the first time. I'm going to Order a tci Dip Stick and see if that helps.

Vegas69 01-31-2010 06:58 PM

It's not the dipstick.

Ya dipstick!

bigtyme1 01-31-2010 07:04 PM

What else could it be? the car runs fine through all gears.

Vegas69 01-31-2010 07:06 PM

When we talked, you said it only leaked while running. Do you have transmission lines in the vacinity?

bigtyme1 01-31-2010 07:10 PM

Yes, but there not hitting the tube at all. Not leaking from the trans lines either.

HRBS 01-31-2010 07:41 PM

Mark... how long was this trans sitting before you put it in the car and ran it ?
Could be that the front pump seal dried out during storage or may not have been replaced on the rebuild. If its leaking from there it would weep out of the inspection cover and coat the pan with fluid making it look as if it was coming from say the dip stick inlet.
Throw that bad boy on the lift and have someone start it while you look from underneath. That way you're not guessing.

bigtyme1 01-31-2010 07:56 PM

Figures it out, Todd was right, it's leaking from the trans line an fittings.

Todd, can I use anything on the AN fittings going into the transmission? It's leaking right where the screw into the side.

Vegas69 01-31-2010 08:49 PM

Is it leaking at the oring or flare connection?

Can't tell yet, I think it's from the o Ring side.

bigtyme1 01-31-2010 09:11 PM

Tride to pull the AN fitting off and it broke off in the trans. Wanna buy a car cheap!!!!

Vegas69 01-31-2010 09:11 PM

In that case, I'd remove the fittings and make sure the sealing surfaces are flat and clean.

bigtyme1 01-31-2010 09:47 PM

I was able to get it out with a easy out. Lucky!!! there is no o rings, this is a 45 swivel ans it uses a brass bushing. what did I do wrong? I'll get new fittings tomorrow

Vegas69 01-31-2010 09:53 PM

Your fitting doesn't line up with you threads??? The copper sealing washer is not be compressed on either side. Is you fitting tweaked?

bigtyme1 01-31-2010 10:11 PM

I got to go to bed, but I'm glad I got it out ok. I'll call you tomorrow if your not busy. I need to get new fittings anyway. Any suggestions?

79 Camaro 02-11-2010 07:47 PM

Check with the guys Godman fittings. I've used the on my 4L60E/LS1 swaps. Used a liittle teflon sealent paste on the threads just to be sure. Zero problems. Also used Lokar trans dipsticks with zero leaks.
